hey it's snowing in chicago, and my fenders are getting a workout
only 4 minutes slower on the daily commute tho!

Shackleton Crater (jdchurchill), Tuesday, 8 December 2009 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Back on the road again: 31.5 miles today and grateful of the mudguards. The inner geek in me is getting mildly excited by the fact it's nearly a year since I started a spreadsheet logging every bike ride I did: this means it's nearly time for the ANNUAL TOTAL to reveal itself.

FIFA Brutish & Short (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 14:16 (fourteen years ago) link

ysi?

SKATAAAAAAAAAAA (cozwn), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 14:16 (fourteen years ago) link

Not just an annual total, but monthly totals, analysis by type of ride (alone or with others, race or training or sportive, which bike I was on).... the possibilities, if not quite endless, seem enough to make me waste at least an hour of my Christmas holidays on.

FIFA Brutish & Short (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 14:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I have an annual total too! I'll just manage to pass 4,000 miles by the end of the year, assuming no accidents etc. before then.

Mark C, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Had my first bike dream that I remembered in the morning. Had nothing to do with riding unfortunately.

For some reason I was in the market to buy a $5000 race bike and found one on craigslist for $3000. I arrange to meet up and bring a check for $3000. The guy brings out the bike and it's boxed. I hand over the check and bring the bike home and take it out of the box and it's a PK RIPPER bmx. I woke up my SO saying I had to call the bank and stop payment on the check.

~~dark energy~~ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 17:08 (fourteen years ago) link

yes i was thinking about this yearly total thing as well. i don't have a spreadsheet but the commute is roughly the same mileage every day. (11 X 5) X 50= 2750. that's alot of miles for me dudes! my first full year biking EVERYDAY.

Meteor Crater (jdchurchill), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

and my belt needs another notch put in it, prolly related to biking imo

First snow ride of the season this morning and suffering from ill chosen cotton socks and no overshoes.

went for a bunch ride with cadel evans and about 150 others north of melbourne. got dropped!!

jon goin hamm (haitch), Sunday, 20 December 2009 05:35 (fourteen years ago) link

nice job with cadel!

i had my last autumn ride of 2009: a solo 40 miler with a few climbs thrown in. i'm pretty out of shape (took the last 6 weeks off basically), tho surprised i could handle the small climbs no problem but i was a downshifting machine on the 5-10 minute suckaz. tried to keep around 20mph but towards the end i was sinking into more like a 17-18mph, might have been the wind... right????

quiet and secretively we will always be together (Steve Shasta), Monday, 21 December 2009 05:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Not able to ride at all at the moment: there's just too much ice out there (and following my crash and not keen to take any risks).

The massively exciting good news is that 17th December saw the first anniversary of the start of my spreadsheet logging my rides. Annual total = 3,384 miles (150 rides, average 22.6 miles). And the fun doesn't stop there: in less than a fortnight I can find my total for 2009. Oh joy.

two 3 hour rides on the rollers this weekend :/

crazy shituations (cutty), Monday, 21 December 2009 14:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Took a wee fall on an insanely icy road tonight. My arm bore the brunt and is now giving me grief, but hopefully it's just a minor knock and temporary troubles that will sort itself out.

krakow, Monday, 21 December 2009 20:55 (fourteen years ago) link

No such luck. I have a potentially fractured right elbow. Morning in A&E, arm in sling, appointment at fracture clinic next Tuesday morning to investigate further once fluids and swelling have had a chance to die down apparently.

:-(

krakow, Tuesday, 22 December 2009 14:47 (fourteen years ago) link

:( sorry dude, that sucks

I still can't believe how icy it is out there; fffffffuuuuuuuuu glasgow council

thurman merman (cozwn), Tuesday, 22 December 2009 14:48 (fourteen years ago) link

That sucks. Hope you heal soon.

Pittsburgh seems to have a no ploughing policy, although heavy on the gritting. Takes a while to take effect. Riding to the supermarket on sunday was a somewhat dicey and not improved by some dick of a runner running down the middle of the dry line on the wrong side of the road. A loud excuse me didn't shift him so I had to swerve onto the ice to avoid hitting him. Not a work from the guy.

krakow, take care and good luck with that. elbows are tricky.

nostragaaaawddamnus (Hunt3r), Monday, 4 January 2010 01:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Thanks Hunt3r. I'm off the bike completely at the moment, as the elbow is most definitely not right, even if it isn't broken. It seemed to get better quickly, but is now regressing, if anything, which is worrying & depressing me. Along to the Dr again on Thursday...

krakow, Monday, 4 January 2010 08:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Ouch. I suppose if you're going to be off the bike, this time of year is the best time for it.

FIFA Brutish & Short (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 4 January 2010 09:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Holy fucking crap. -3 here (aka 26 degrees F) and I made the mistake of leaving the house sweating through my bald head. Ice cream headache!!

Mark C, Monday, 4 January 2010 14:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i am still cold

dome plow (gbx), Monday, 4 January 2010 14:40 (fourteen years ago) link

I can't even conceptualise -23C. I assume that as soon as you step outside your eyeballs freeze and you turn into a statue until the spring.

holy shit guys
i looked over my tire last night cuz of my recent flats
and seriously found 18 different spots with slivers of glass lodged into the tire
chicago is covered with tiny glass shards!
only like 3 of them actually made a noticeable mark on the inner surface of the ultra gator skins
but whoa dude: 18?
no flats today tho

Meteor Crater (jdchurchill), Tuesday, 5 January 2010 20:14 (fourteen years ago) link

oh man chicago is the worst with the glass

went big game hunting on beach rd. why do people not wanna roll turns when a big group gets together?? kinda found myself dropping off the tail of the pack to get more of a workout. also had to cut away from the coastline due to triathlon - touring thru wealthy suburbia has its own attractions i guess.

nicest bike seen all morning = blue master x-light with the old deep-section shamals!!

the race is not very serious (early bird racing, i get points just for showing up), it was so nice i was just planning to do 40 miles but then ran into this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Skilbeck who is a super interesting dude to talk to and the next thing you know, I was way over my head and hadn't been eating and i b-zonked. i had to get off the bike, slammed a redbull, gatorade, two brownies and i was back in biz. dying tho.

Did the Santa Ana River Trail today from Corona, CA to Newport Beach. 63.2 miles round-trip, which makes it my longest ride yet. The actual map: http://bit.ly/8rrPEC

naus, Monday, 11 January 2010 07:46 (fourteen years ago) link

With a slight thaw here and my arm significantly recovered, I'm cautiously back on the bike after my pre-christmas accident. Going to ease in and take it very easy, especially with the weather still pretty hairy, but it's good to be out there again.
