Diplo has also described the forthcoming M.I.A. album, which he's working on, as "Gucci Mane meets Animal Collective."

That said, Diplo is a tool. Point final.

i hear that the diplo remix of gucci heavily samples mariah's "can't let go". makes half of me want to hear it more and the other half want to NEVER hear it - as of now it lurks unclicked in itunes, right next to that solange dirty projectors cover: mp3s to avoid.
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:04 (fourteen years ago) link
i guess i kinda understand why ya'll are upset about the diplo mix, that he's taking already great gucci cuts and turning them into hipster-lite predigested blog fodder (right?). but part of me is thinking what's the big fucking deal? i suspect i'll like a fair share of the remixes myself, or i atleast haven't banished the possibility from my mind.

i'm really warming to the r&b songs on the album. i still can't get through the first minute of 'sunlight' without reaching for the skip button, but "bad bad bad" and "i think im in love" are great, and even "sex in crazy places" is fun in a silly way.
― brooklyn we go ham (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:16 (fourteen years ago) link
i dont really understand hating diplo considering hes done a bunch of things i really like (mia, santogold, f&l in hunts vegas, ummmmmmm im sure there is something else)

the last line of defense for that guy is always "hey he's remixing/piggybacking on/rebranding music that was great to begin with, so his version of it should be pretty enjoyable too, right?" which isn't necessarily wrong but doesn't actually make anything he does the least bit worthwhile or deserving of positive attention.
― some dude, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 21:37 (fourteen years ago) link
plus this gucci mix srt8 sucks?
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 9 December 2009 22:09 (fourteen years ago) link
I mean, Diplo's success or failure for me has to do more with the abilities of his collaborators rather than his own stuff. Working with Maya or Santi he's done stuff I like. Other times, not so much.
The predigested blog fodder thing is frustrating because it lets people avoid dealing with Gucci on his own terms (I mean...hell, I'll be the first to admit that I don't totally "get" Gucci yet all the time, but damned if I'm gonna take a shortcut). Plus, Diplo getting his fingers on stuff usually leads to it no longer having its own ID - just the brand of Diplo's own name. Clearly it won't be as awful as the (admittedly v. enjoyable to listen to) Favela on Blast situation, where Brasilian DJs and MCs were literally not credited and track names were not given - just a big mix of unwashed heathen music, presented free of context to you by your friendly interloper from Philly.
It's not as egregious as say...the Hood Internet, which do the FILTHY IGNANT HIP HOP + INDIE BACKING TRACKS LOLZ thing, mind you, and implicitly send a far more repugnant message about the value of rap.

I mean, it's not necessarily that the remixes will be bad, it's that they're superfluous.
Um. Some of what I just wrote is probably totally off-base, but articulating kneejerk hatred in a rational way is difficult sometimes.

that's a good point about it giving an opportunity for people to avoid listening to gucci on his own terms. i'm just wondering to what degree your collectives attitudes are hinged on you guys actually disliking diplo's work, or simply the idea of him remixing gucci. clearly you've enjoyed some of what he's done.
― brooklyn we go ham (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 23:13 (fourteen years ago) link
and part of me dreads these mixes coming out, when the salem remix dropped, gorillavsbear posted "he should hire them to make all his beats," whic is like-arghh, he's already got great beats! but maybe that's just the grumpy old man in me.
― brooklyn we go ham (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 23:15 (fourteen years ago) link
