Have I ever told you how much I love hammed up jazz organ like Wild Bill Davis and Shirley Scott?

Had never heard of Cherry Wainer, and those vids are all kinds of awesome. Thanks!

Might check out a younger guy name Jared Gold who's playing for no cover tonight in my neighborhood.

A much more subdued and kind of surprising Shirley Scott album I've recently discovered is 1974's One For Me. Recorded for Strata East with a small combo, it's definitely an outlier in her discography and sounds a lot like a classic soul jazz session. Quite enjoyable! Here's "Keep on Movin` On":

Also facepalm/xpost to the Spotify name confusion topic— there's an "Internationally Known Animal Communicator and Clairvoyant" Reverend Shirley Scott that shows up in the results next to this album. The album cover photo features the reverend cuddling a housecat.

Clarence Wheeler + the Enforcers — "Hey Jude" (1970)

That one very blue part of my brain says the organ on this is "the finest, glaziest, moistest ham offered in the Beatles covers aisle." By the time that second breakdown hits, you'll probably forget it started out as "Hey Jude." Also a very famous sample cut. All around jam. The rest of the album is very much in the same line and the originals are decent. I especially liked "Dream Bossa Nova."

I just rewatched the Cherry Wainer “Happy Organ” video upthread and noticed apparently her poodle on stage with her at 2:09.

X post - in October 21 I heard a dc based WPFW DJ play a bunch of r’n’b covers of Beatles and later last year saw a list on twitter of such covers, but I think they missed out on Clarence Wheeler

I listened to the whole Clarence Wheeler album at the gym this morning. Really nice throughout, but “Hey Jude” is the standout for sure.

Nice! Yeah, I really liked the album. I had it on reissued vinyl about 15 years ago and played "Hey Jude" at gigs fairly often. I think they were from Chicago, so they had a bit of a distinct organ funk vibe. Hits me as a bit more rough edged sound than the NYC organ combos of the time, but still able to swing on the ballads. There's one other album on Spotify (The New Chicago Blues) so I'm checking that out this morning. It's good! No big stunner like "Hey Jude", but definitely recommend if you liked the first album and want more.

One last thing: I always just assumed Clarence Wheeler was the organist in the group — not so. He's a tenor guy! The organist is a Sonny Burke and, among other things, Sonny has "written songs for Earth Wind & Fire, Dusty Springfield, Margie Joseph, Smokey Robinson etc." Love the "etc" there. Go, Sonny!
