Charlie gives me great hope that they may have turned things around. Personally, I'm not so much sat on the fence about them, more like tangled up in the razorwire. I love them, but I'm not blind to their faults. In fact I like them best when they're possibly at their corniest... 'Snowfall Soon', 'Password', stuff like that, and when I'm in the mood they can kick up a racket as beautiful to me as anything else.

Trick of the Sea is undoubtedly their best moment as well as the Low collaboration "Sleep at the Bottom" (which is hardly PM anyway since only Charles is on it), but the new album is great, with the exception of the song that was put out as a single. My attitudes toward the other records fluctuate but I'd hardly live without them.

Low Birth Weight is a terrific album I think but it may well be the sort of terrific album I never really need to listen to again. Like Jess I feel a bit sad about that but there you go.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:40 (twenty years ago) link

But Tico, it's a compilation, you can't give them Terrific Album credit.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:57 (twenty years ago) link

Low Birth Weight isnt a comp is it - are you thinking of the singles one? (which I think I only listened to once)

Damn right, it would utterly rend the universe in two.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:01 (twenty years ago) link

the fortdax remix of "certainty" is essential. it actually makes the song not only listenable but utterly gorgeous

Low Birth Weight is still great, as is A Trick of The Sea and I Came To Your Party Dressed As A Shadow. Everything I've heard after Artist's Rifles was absolute rubbish.

i still dont reallty like artists rifles that much, but, doesnt it remind you, a little, of bo hansson?

I rather enjoy The Troubled Sleep... actually, although I wish more of it was like the first track which is awesome.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 March 2005 02:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I only have Seasonally Affective and I don't dislike anything on it, although I'm not always inclined to listen to some songs. Every time I play it, though, "Non-Fiction" always gets a play. So simple, so heart-rending...
I love "Password" from Artists Rifles. I'm looking forward to the new stuff with John Grant.

Spencer, i couldn't agree more. "Password" is such an amazing track!

A CD-R:

For Engineers A
Certainty
I Came To Your Party
Wintersport/Cross Country
I Am The Sub-Librarian
Dark Secrets Look For Light
Saint Marie
No Closure
The Journal of a Disappointed Man
I Am The Teacher's Son
This Heart Machinery
Incurable
Password
The End of A Dark, Tired Year
Postal.

(Disclaimer: Didn't really have a plan for the CD-R - it's not a best of or a perfectly poised overview, more just what ended up on the CD tonight).

Over the years I've come to the conclusion that The Troubled Sleep of Piano Magic has their best songs of anything up to Part-Monster (I haven't heard any of the albums after that).

Tim F, Thursday, 19 January 2017 22:23 (seven years ago) link

the new album is great, prefer it to the last one. they're friends so I give them a pass even when they haven't been exceptional. Troubled Sleep is a lovely album; so is Disaffected. The new one is largely a kind of 'song' album, as opposed the assortment of oddments albums that were par for the course early on.

akm, Thursday, 19 January 2017 23:31 (seven years ago) link

Those are both great, Artist's Rifles still a favourite when driving at night. Will def check the new one out.

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 20 January 2017 11:25 (seven years ago) link

always had a lot of affection for this band - for some personal reasons (I learned of them just as we were becoming stablemates) and then also because their music was distinctive: no one else really like them in my view! hadn't heard there was a latest, keen to listen

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 20 January 2017 12:38 (seven years ago) link

I had no idea they were still going! I thought the 'Heart Machinery' comp of a year or so ago was their final release. New one has been duly ordered!

'Ovations' is a great record is anyone is looking to explore their more recent output.

So ... Piano Magic's "Closure" or Angele David-Guillou's "En Mouvement"?

djh, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 22:14 (six years ago) link

Closure is a good album for them to finish up on though it falls short of being one of their best. Angele's album is sublime.

akm, Tuesday, 5 December 2017 23:12 (six years ago) link

I thought Klima was her completely solo thing but there was someone else in that.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 00:20 (six years ago) link

I really like Closure, I will need to check out the other one

Simon H., Wednesday, 6 December 2017 00:22 (six years ago) link

I'm struck by how much of Piano Magic's back catalogue I enjoy these days ... I don't think my journey alongside them has always been a straight-forward one - I've often come round to albums long after the fact.

djh, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link

several people from piano magic backed her on the Klima albums (not glen)

Having a prolonged Piano Magic "phase". Really enjoying the "Heart Machinery" compilation. Strangely, "Artists Rifles" seems like a "classic" these days. I was fairly ambivalent at the time, wanting them to carry on making music along the lines of "For Engineers".

Genuinely amazed how long it has taken Pin/Johnson to sell 200 copies of this ((or 185, there are still 15 copies left with the free cassette). I'd kind of imagined that Johnson would have a "fan base"/"market".

They - Piano Magic rather than Pin/Johnson - were sounding amazing on my headphones, tonight.

Was playing the compilation above and this run ...

Saint Marie

The Journal of a Disappointed Man
I Am The Teacher's Son

... was just incredible.

love we don't just disappear and surprised that they're doing a second album under this name. "demolitions" is great and a perfectly eerie mood for fall. yep, excited for this one.

I know Piano Magic is/was a London-based band but is Glen Johnson from WMidlands environs? I was listening to their cover of "How Does It Feel?" and the accent sounded rather natural, nearly Brummy.
