I had no idea muse was so huge. They're playing at u2 sized venues? Is this what ppl like these days?

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Sunday, 20 December 2009 05:50 (fourteen years ago) link

i have never been able to figure out who likes them. i think its the britishes.

bnw, Sunday, 20 December 2009 05:52 (fourteen years ago) link

haha ive sent this IM to my friend, muse-fan abt 5 times, latest just recently:

xxxxxxx: i still find it hard to believe anyone likes muse

johnny crunch, Sunday, 20 December 2009 05:54 (fourteen years ago) link

they seem undecided on whether they're u2 or radiohead

shartin jort (am0n), Sunday, 20 December 2009 05:56 (fourteen years ago) link

They're playing at the united center in Chicago - I saw the big fancy ad recently- and I just had no idea they were that sort of band. I worked in a record store abt 10 yrs ago and I remember thinking they were blah, sort of like coldplay. And now they're huge? Like coldplay? I didn't see that coming.

It's been a very long time since I've seen any of those episodes.

tbf they only play U2 size venues in America when they're opening for U2

some dude, Sunday, 20 December 2009 11:43 (fourteen years ago) link

that was the 3rd "What Up With That" sketch in the space of 7 episodes. between that and the "A Very Gilly Christmas" primetime special it feels like we're entering a new Mary Katherine Gallagher era of the same sketches airing over and over with barely any variation from week to week.

some dude, Sunday, 20 December 2009 11:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Someone at SNL is kind of websmart, and told Lorne that the kids are loving "What Up With That." Naturally, Lorne thinks he's struck oil and will mine every last drop.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 20 December 2009 12:17 (fourteen years ago) link

the first time it felt giddy and unexpected and fun, but it's already starting to feel a little perfunctory as of last night. can't wait for the 80-minute movie version.

some dude, Sunday, 20 December 2009 12:46 (fourteen years ago) link

better than the last few episodes. Jammies was awesome.

Nah, as Amanda said, they're headlining the United Center in Chicago. Silversun Pickups are opening. And yeah, I too was caught off-guard by that development.

Nuyorican oatmeal (jaymc), Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:00 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm yeah looks like U2 played there in '05. i'm sure the ticket sales were very different, but still, weird.

some dude, Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:49 (fourteen years ago) link

It really doesn't make any sense - have they sold any albums in the US at all? Is this just like, "throw them in an arena and maybe people will think they're worth seeing?"

"seven churches is fucking amazing." (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 20 December 2009 17:54 (fourteen years ago) link

they've got 2 gold albums in the U.S. now and the latest one is doing well enough that it should go gold and possibly platinum soon enough. but yeah, those are pretty low numbers to be playing a venue that big. maybe in big cities with especially international populations they can depend on bands that are bigger in Europe or otherwise abroad to sell more tickets than their U.S. sales would indicate?

Thought it was a pretty good show last night, although What Up With That was really weak this time. Even Kenan seemed like he was going through the motions methodically.

Muse's popularity in the US has grown considerably since the release of Black Holes. They played at the VMA's last August.

I was just watching some of this on Netflix actually (Season 5 I think)..

billstevejim, Sunday, 20 December 2009 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link

when Muse played NYC on that 'black holes & revelations' tour - whichever that was - they sold out madison square garden and people were losing their shit over them (i was reviewing). i know nyc pulls people from a lot of markets but, yeah, they're pretty big.

When Muse played Lollapalooza a few years back they drew a HUGE crowd opposite, I believe, Interpol. They headlined the second night and I was blown away by the crowd.

They must be street teaming high schools pretty heavy or some shit. Also, probably some Hot Topic push.

I'm just guessing.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 21 December 2009 01:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Actually, judging from the crowd, many of the fans were 30-35 year olds that still cling to any bands sounding like the alt-rock of their college years.

Harry Shearer really bugs me.

I tried watching an episode of the first season of SNL recently and it was hard for me to sit through, honestly.

Rage, Resentment, Spleen (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 23 December 2009 19:19 (fourteen years ago) link

lotta crap in the first season, with some bright moments (Paul Simon vs. Connie Hawkins b-ball game!). Didn't really hit their stride until the 2nd and 3rd seasons.

I watched the Franco episode recently, first time I'd seen the show in a few years, really fairly unbearable.

Yeah. First season isn't really that good. There's some good stuff in it, but it's few and far between. But it's also 35 years old and, y'know, the first season of a show that had yet to really find its footing.

Also, just catching up and coming to this late, but:

i dunno i kinda thought 1973 colonel sanders NASA job applicant potato chip regurgitator thief collecting his hemorrhoid donut on the way out the door skit was pretty fantastic and unless i'm overlooking something pretty obvious maybe even the best job interview oriented SNL skit since the chris parnell/christopher walken "we don't hire dirty centaurs" classic

^^^^^^^^^^This. That and Kickspit were A+ classics.

two weeks pass...

alright, so, this episode wasn't horrible. i actually laughed a good amount. the "scared straight" sketch is about as funny as that's going to get. and mcgruber was good. i don't know, maybe the past week and a half have been so shitty that i'm just desperate for comedy. maybe i lowered the bar for charles barkley. but i thought it was good. guys?

Early Tuesday morning, a distraught Tequila tweeted (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Sunday, 10 January 2010 09:32 (fourteen years ago) link

I was in and out of the room while it was on, but I my favorite thing about the Scared Straight sketches is how Kenan always tries to crack up Hader on camera and it ALWAYS works.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 10 January 2010 09:34 (fourteen years ago) link

thought it was a pretty decent episode. i feel like their game show parodies have been getting better ('Reel Quotes' last night and 'Secret Word' in the Joseph Gordon-Levitt episode) because they realized they can have 2 different contestants w/ 2 different running jokes going on at the same time. 'Scared Straight' is the same every time and is just not a good recurring sketch.
