Hi Jesse

I just had lunch from the noodle joint up on 57th. Ginger salad with tofu and crunchy noodles YUM.

xpost: Cricket is boooooorrrrrring. I went to an Australia v. India match once, it took 6 fucking hours. And that was a short game.

I miss the Asian foods. New Orleans is kind of lacking in that department. Except Chinese or course.

McDonald's just opened up down the street from my office. I think that may be today's lunch. 99 cent menu, here I come.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Are there any Vietnamese places? There are a ton of Vietnamese immigrants, or at least there used to be.

I guess they run New Orleans restaurants and convenience stores though, not Vietnamese ones.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 16:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I was just going to mention the fact that with all the Vietnamese people here (or in East New Orleans) you would think there'd be more selection. But it doesn't matter, because I'm not crazy about Vietnamese food. I could go for some Thai though.

Dagnabbit, Jesse, the survey is in a bulletin board post not a blog post. You're supposed to take the survey and repost it as a MySpace bulletin. Not that your blog commentary wasn't amusing, which it was, and I'm thankful for it but you're supposed to take my Chicago survey!

I don't have a myspace, and I kinda don't want one, but this Chicago survey intrigues me.

I'll post it here if you promise to answer it and add questions to it. PLAY A GAME WITH ME, PEOPLE!

But of course.

There's no perfect bar, but I like Simon's for the neighborhood camaraderie; Hopleaf for the unusual high-alcohol beers, Belgian morsels, and New York Review of Books; and K's Dugout for the cheap pitchers and Internet jukebox. Seems like it.

14. Who, besides Rich, would you like to see in the mayor's office?

Wicker Park: Reckless + Myopic + Quimby's = yes.

25. Chicago dogs or deep dish pizza?
Pizza.

26. Smoking ban: Mike Ditka or the American Lung Association?
Used to be against the ban, but now I'm for it. Easier to quit smoking when no one else is smoking.

27. Kanye or Common?
Kanye. I don't find Common all that interesting.

28. One place you always take first-time visitors.
Used to be Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. Hopleaf's a good choice; so are wacky vegetarian restaurants like Alice and Friends.

29. Have you ever called your Alderperson?
No.

30. Have you ever called the mayor's office?
No.

31. What's your favorite place to eat breakfast?
Victory's Banner

The panhandler questions reminded me of this site I found over the weekend:

Description:Dave's stories
mp3s:http://www.temporaryservices.org/track_listings.html

It's basically the musings of a homeless man in Chicago, recorded on a tape player given to him by some guys who ran art exhibits downtown. I found it incredibly interesting.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 18:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyone who is willing to vote for Dorothy Brown clearly doesn't have to deal with the Circuit Court Clerk's office. If they did, they would have zero confidence in her ability to run an office efficiently, let alone a city. Massive thumbs down.

allie (allie b), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't think there is that much trash on the ground in Chicago. Certainly way less than many other cities (Baltimore, Philly, NEW ORLEANS, NYC).

I don't know what would embarrass me. New Yorkers mocking the Midwesternness of the place kind of stings.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, there's way less trash on the streets than in NYC. At least we have alleys. At the same time, it's a large urban environment -- I expect a certain amount of filth.

I've dealt with the Circuit Court Clerk's office a ton and haven't found it to be any worse than any other clerk's office here or in North Carolina. I might have a high tolerance for surly municipal employees and bureaucratic nonsense, though.

32. Have you ever ridden a Metra train and where to?
took it out to deerfield because my ex had a job interview out there and was nervous and didn't want to go alone. i called in sick to work and walked around for the four hours while she was at her interview. it was about 10 degrees outside. it was my 29th birthday. she got the job.

33. Have you ever been swimming at a city beach?
Yes, somewhere on the far noth side with Jesse. There was trash in the water. I haven't been since.

34. Where is your favorite place to order delivery pizza of any style?
We always ordered from Gordano's, the place famously characterized by Jonah as looking like it was run by rats. I don't have a favorite place in our new neighborhood yet.

35. How many places have you lived in Chicago?
Two

36. What are you most embarassed by in the city when guests visit?
I was a wee bit embarassed when Jeff's parents came to visit for the first time and someone stole his mom's wallet on the train.

37. How often do you go to the Harrold Washington Library?
Monthly, roughly.

38. What do you like best about living here? Like least?
Best - there is always something entertaining going on, and nine times out of ten, I can walk to it. Also, public transportation.
Least - sometimes it's a little too noisy. Chicago, slow down!

EXTRA BONUS- Where's question 18?
In the gimp room.

I just thought of another good one...

Do you drink Chicago tap water?
(yes)

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:06 (seventeen years ago) link

And I mean straight from the tap, no Brit@ or anything...

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I use a Brita out of habit, but I don't have a problem with Chicago tap water -- it usually tastes fine to me. At this point the Brita is just a way to keep my water cold in the refrigerator.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:08 (seventeen years ago) link

my last place was fine, i have REEEEEALLLLY hard water at my current place, calcium deposits on my shower head requiring frequent cleaning are proof. brita is good to me.

Whoops. I did not ride the Metra with Kevin's ex. As a matter of fact, I have never ridden Metra.

I was on my way down to ask you about this. I missed the she part, but still wondered what was up since you and Jeff were a couple on your 29th b-day as far as I know.

Hard water= low-sudsing on your soap. But soft water= need for extended periods of rinsing soap from your body.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 19:14 (seventeen years ago) link

The only difference I know between the two is from growing up, when we had a water softener in the garage. We used soft water for most things, but hard water tasted better, so we'd run downstairs and flip it when we wanted to fill up a pitcher.

Man, I can't help but feel sorry for the guy, since he's an old man who'll have to sit in a jail cell for a good part of his twilight years -- and also because his lifting of the death penalty really endeared me to him, corruption charges notwithstanding. If he'd run again, and was up against a Democrat stooge like Glenn Poshard, I'd probably have voted for him.

I am working late tonight just because there will be free pizza. It's all very sad.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 21:21 (seventeen years ago) link

I am working late because tomorrow I have to tell a bunch of editors about What It Is We Do. Then I have to go to a training session for the bulk of the rest of the afternoon. This leaves me with a half day to do my actual "work." And that is not enough time to get it done, so here I am.
