it'd be great if they were able to license some of the older players so you could have classic NBA JAM teams

He's heating up!
BOOM-SHAKA-LAKA!
Ugly shot!
Ugly shot!
Ugly shot!
For three!
JAMS it in!
Wide open!
From downtown!
At the buzzer!

THE NAIL IN THE COFFIN!

/no cobo (jamescobo), Monday, 18 January 2010 21:28 (fourteen years ago) link

Earlier I was looking up NBA Jam catchphrases to make sure I didn't miss anything ("hello ladeeez, this is how ZS rolls during the afternoon"), and came upon a list of things that the announcer says in the Genesis version. And I noticed that a few of them aren't in the SNES version (which was the one I played). Here's the list:

Boom Shaka Laka! - (my personal favorite!)
Can't buy a bucket!
For two!
Grabs the rebound!
He's heating up!
He's on fire!
Head fake
Hello!
Is it the shoes?
It's a turnover!
Jams it in!
Oh my!
Puts up a brick!
Rejected!
Swish!
The nail in the coffin!

Oh, the "(my personal favorite!)" was in the guy's list. My personal favorite has gotta be "FROM DOWNTOWN!!"

Malone and Stockton was essentially unbeatable if Stockton got the rebound.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 4 February 2010 01:28 (fourteen years ago) link

it was always great watching someone blindly pick the Bulls and then realize that MJ wasn't available.

seven months pass...

can we talk about how its some bullshit that this game was supposed to be like $15 dlc but once nba elite got flushed down the shitter it turned into a $50 release?

five months pass...

I paid $30 for it. Well worth it. Basically it is a lot like the new Mario/DKC games in that it's very mindful of what made the originals so great. Very addictive and super fun. Right now I play as Brandon Jennings (because I'm a homer) and do alright. The Heat are absolutely ridiculous. They are like the modern version of the Madden 04 Eagles.

this oral history is killing me. I knew it was insanely popular, but this was crazy

mh, Saturday, 8 July 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

Fun read. I was kinda irrationally angry at the NBA licensing person initially refusing to give it a thumbs up because arcade machines were only in disreputable locations. Pretty wtf/clueless opinion to have in the early 90s.

he's heating up!
