but seriously like 60% of my wardrobe is uniqlo--in fact i am (embarrassingly) wearing an entirely uniqlo outfit right now, except for my shoes and undershirt

i hear you...uniqlo is pretty amazing. lots of horrible stuff there and it can be a bit plain but some great things too and quality is really good for the price.

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 22 January 2010 18:59 (fourteen years ago) link

acne and nudie jeans (on sale), h&m dress shirts & socks, aa tees and knit undershirts, br shirts and some slacks. more shirts from vintage/thrift stories. got a peacoat from topman that i like. got a great rainjacket and a great down coat from nau.

>uniqlo is pretty amazing.

Agree with all previous rep for uniqlo, and am still gutted that their early '00s UK provincial stores all shut, so I have to buy everything online unless am in or around London. Great jeans (esp the japanese denim, which is a steal), great basics and the best undies and socks anywhere, much better than 99% of designer stuff - I've ended up replacing my whole boxers and socks drawer with their stuff just because it wears and washes so well.

Bill A, Friday, 22 January 2010 19:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Thrift stores, band tshirts, and coats and hats from the local shop that sells construction gear.

kingfish, Friday, 22 January 2010 19:57 (fourteen years ago) link

uniqlo is so plain tho and not even in a nice apc/cos way, most of it looks like clothes from next

agreed the denim is good and their prices are great; saying it is shit was maybe a bit strong

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i dont know what "next" is, but uniqlo works p well for me, simple pieces cut well for super cheap and ok quality

they have a ton of ugly shit but... i dont buy it

max, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:25 (fourteen years ago) link

OK ITS GOOD I SAID IT

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:25 (fourteen years ago) link

they're opening a cos here soon which is <3 cos it's bullshit that in 2010 u can't buy h&m/cos online

I think ur a probotector (cozen), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:26 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, h&m's lack of online shopping always rings me off too, same with Gap who barely even have a UK website.

Bill A, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I had never even heard of uniqlo before this thread (they don't exist in california apparently)

interested to check it out now tho

iatee, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Brooks Bros summer sale, winter sale keeps me in nice shirts and trousers.

hugo, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah dover st market is good. my girl works for comme de garcon so i get a ton of discounts. got a couple of beautiful raf simons shirts that are pretty much my staple. the comme de garcon shirts aren't so good, kinda blocky and square. too business like. i like clothes that you spend a decent amount on and you just know you're going to wear them for a good while

the rest of my clothes come from charity shops, but you have to go to a wide range of locations and often enough if you're gonna find anything worth wearing, it's not like you wake up one morning and think 'i really need some black trousers' and then pop down to the local care & share to buy some. i guess that's where your uniqlos and h&m's come in. i taught myself how to take in trousers with a needle and thread which makes finding them at charity shops a lot easier if you prefer a certain fit

super jealous! have some older stuff (like 01-04) which is fantastic - particularly the knits. and one really deconstructed suit jacket.

Lamp, Friday, 22 January 2010 20:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Paul Smith (esp. if you live in an area close to their "Jeans Shops"... not necessarily a denim jeans): I have a pair of med weight wool trousers from about 10 seasons ago that are ~amazing~. A steal at ~£100 iirc.

Also, Londoners should hit that Paul Smith Sale Shop as well, you can get decent 1-2 season old Italian-made pret-a-porter suits for CHEAP.

I think (?) the only Uniqlo in the USA is in on broadway in NYC at the old OMG location... I will rep for Uniqlo's last couple seasons of denim, easily the best price:value prop that I've seen in about 10 years! There quality on tops are not as stringent but their denim from their owned/operated factory in Hiroshima is really ace. I have a pair of raw black jeans that look really nice after a couple years.

damn rio, i should have had your number my last visit! I'm tall and broad shouldered and surprisingly the CdG/JW shirts fit me almost always off the rack, and if not, I know a few people who can make them fit! ;-)

also rio, I can't forget Rose Bakery which (other than St. John) was unexpectedly one of the best meals I've had in England!

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 22 January 2010 20:59 (fourteen years ago) link

hey steve shasta what do u think of naked & famous?

paul smith's less formal dress shirts are really well tailored imo - not as big a fan of the cdg/jw dress shirts which are less sweet and more gimmicky

Lamp, Friday, 22 January 2010 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

hey Mr. Lamp, I think that Naked & Famous is great, their product reminds me a lot of (their American peer) Takumi who uses the same fabric... in fact, Paul Smith Red Ear MIJ (who made one of my favorite jeans ever about 7 years ago) also sources from that same denim factory in Kojima, Japan.

The fabric is indeed really nice (I'm very familiar with that particular factory's output), but I have to admit I do not own any of the N&F stuff but I've seen it in shops and shows and I admire the fit of the one pair I tried on, which reminded me of a more rugged Dior Homme cut.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:17 (fourteen years ago) link

something about uniqlo fit does not work for me. the thighs are too stretchy, the calves too skinny

not sure why but i can't find any prices/ordering instructions at naked and famous online

you have to forgive me (surm), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:28 (fourteen years ago) link

You can order from BiG and they should have size charts as well:

smashing aspirant (milo z), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:30 (fourteen years ago) link

thank u!

i also see so much uniqlo denim around brooklyn that i think i'd rather get something else

you have to forgive me (surm), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link

have definitely been wanting to check out their shirts and sweaters though, i hear they have good colors

Paul Smith Red Ear MIJ (who made one of my favorite jeans ever about 7 years ago

lol i keep meaning to try on a pair of these bcuz of your praise

Lamp, Friday, 22 January 2010 21:43 (fourteen years ago) link

are you in nyc? i like the blue in green one's more than the paul smith shop ones tbh!

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

also w/r/t trousers, i am currently flitting btw a 30 and 32, and am becoming very confused by it all :|

you have to forgive me (surm), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:51 (fourteen years ago) link

like i have 1 32 pair that's spot on, and another that i have to keep pulling up :(

you have to forgive me (surm), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I have that exact same problem. It's why I never buy clothes over the web.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link

better online retailers should have advertised measurements which if you know yours, can be super helpful!

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:59 (fourteen years ago) link

(note: i don't buy online either fwiw lol)

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 22 January 2010 21:59 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah they do have advertised measurements, but with waists there seems to be more than enough variation to ensure that half the things that are supposed to be in my size just won't fit right.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 22 January 2010 22:03 (fourteen years ago) link

even from the same company sometimes, different styles or whatever. also it's too easy to spend $$$ online :P

you have to forgive me (surm), Friday, 22 January 2010 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

that's called "tolerance", the bedfellow of old/faulty patterns and lax enforcement. one of my #1 pet peeves.

┌∩┐(◕_◕)┌∩┐ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 22 January 2010 22:07 (fourteen years ago) link

lol despite being p sure ive been in it i dont even remember where the paul smith shop is. also i dont really need nor can i really afford more new jeans just that u reminded i wanted to (at some point) try those. actually shasta do u know of any places in nyc that carry furfur?

i wish filippa k wld offer online shopping - wld buy so much stuff

Oh Sara, come back to New Hampshire, we'll stay there forever (Lamp), Friday, 22 January 2010 22:11 (fourteen years ago) link

the skinniest jeans from uniqlo fit me better than any other pair of trousers I think I've ever owned...they are actually pretty much all I wear, in about 11 diff colours/designs

I see what this is (Local Garda), Friday, 22 January 2010 22:12 (fourteen years ago) link

you don't find that they sag in the butt?? maybe i should give them another go . . .

you have to forgive me (surm), Friday, 22 January 2010 22:13 (fourteen years ago) link

yea thats true for me too ronan

max, Friday, 22 January 2010 22:13 (fourteen years ago) link

mine dont sag in the butt and i have no butt

max, Friday, 22 January 2010 22:14 (fourteen years ago) link

this thread is so sad! do you people really get all your clothes from h&m, uniqlo, AA, gap? i mean, its fine and all for basics, but do you only wear basics?

phil-two, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Well yeah phil, we obviously just shop at Kohl's for suits and shit.

Kidding. I consider H&M (been there 4-5 times in Chicago/Las Vegas) and Uniqlo (never been in one!) a foreign convenience. As an ilxor who lives in a city that is at least a notch or two below Minneapolis in shopping selection (but coming up on the boutique tip in the next few years), I typically have either bought shoes while shopping or from zappos/nordstrom online. I get some basic t-shirt stuff from either random sales or AA, jeans from various sources or Levi's, and pants from either a local chain (Younkers, which has been owned by various national chains in recent years) or Banana Republic, etc.

I've been buying more random clothes from sites like gilt.com that do designer sales, or boutique stores that have a website. Also semi-addicted to the sportswear-like nau.com.

Puma shoe addiction..

mh, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Phil, all I have is basics. I rarely even have the chance to sport something nicer. Remember that time we met? You wouldn't talk to me because my clothes were basics and I said your Kimchee was too hot.

Jeff, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:24 (fourteen years ago) link

basics are all I know =(

dyao, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Pretty much all basics.

I'm enjoying the current Americana/workwear trend, because my usual style of looking like a Neil Young roadie circa '72 makes me look ahead of the game. In a couple of years, I'll just look homeless again. :(

smashing aspirant (milo z), Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

this thread is so sad! do you people really get all your clothes from h&m, uniqlo, AA, gap? i mean, its fine and all for basics, but do you only wear basics?

yeah, it's called being poor

iatee, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:42 (fourteen years ago) link

frankly, where I live, there are not h&m, uniqlo, or AA stores. so beyond that, yeah....

mh, Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:31 (fourteen years ago) link

If I had the kind of income that allowed me to purchase $270 pants, why would I even be wearing pants? I'd be wearing pajamas 24/7, swimming naked in my Olympic-sized pool.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:39 (fourteen years ago) link

that last sentence doesn't make sense unless you're saying you'd be able to buy 270$ pajamas that let you wear them and be naked at the same time

dyao, Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:54 (fourteen years ago) link

They have space-age fabrics these days, you know

mh, Saturday, 23 January 2010 05:05 (fourteen years ago) link

are they available in basics, is wha I wanna know

dyao, Saturday, 23 January 2010 05:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I dressed pretty much the same for the last 4 years. Either a hanes v neck with Marc Jacob Wranglers and cowboy boots or a dress shirt with the same jeans and boots. I usually buy 3 or 4 pairs of the same jean and hanes comes in packs of 5.

Jacob Sanders, Saturday, 23 January 2010 07:12 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, h&m's lack of online shopping always rings me off too

I feel you all because I didn't always live in a city with two H&Ms within walking distance of one another. Would gladly trade one of them for an online store for you guys.

three weeks pass...

went to pinnas and needles for my alterations. long waitlist but the experience of going to an anonymous door in soho, ringing the buzzer, going up the classic soho interior stairs to the clutter of the studio is great. as was whichever brother it was that i met. they were more expensive than some other services but not overly much. queuing for my trousers on the stairs and chatting with a bunch of other people with various clothing concerns and considerations.

plus and most importantly:
