Well yeah phil, we obviously just shop at Kohl's for suits and shit.
Kidding. I consider H&M (been there 4-5 times in Chicago/Las Vegas) and Uniqlo (never been in one!) a foreign convenience. As an ilxor who lives in a city that is at least a notch or two below Minneapolis in shopping selection (but coming up on the boutique tip in the next few years), I typically have either bought shoes while shopping or from zappos/nordstrom online. I get some basic t-shirt stuff from either random sales or AA, jeans from various sources or Levi's, and pants from either a local chain (Younkers, which has been owned by various national chains in recent years) or Banana Republic, etc.
I've been buying more random clothes from sites like gilt.com that do designer sales, or boutique stores that have a website. Also semi-addicted to the sportswear-like nau.com.
Puma shoe addiction..

Phil, all I have is basics. I rarely even have the chance to sport something nicer. Remember that time we met? You wouldn't talk to me because my clothes were basics and I said your Kimchee was too hot.
― Jeff, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:24 (fourteen years ago) link
basics are all I know =(
― dyao, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:27 (fourteen years ago) link
Pretty much all basics.
I'm enjoying the current Americana/workwear trend, because my usual style of looking like a Neil Young roadie circa '72 makes me look ahead of the game. In a couple of years, I'll just look homeless again. :(
― smashing aspirant (milo z), Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link
this thread is so sad! do you people really get all your clothes from h&m, uniqlo, AA, gap? i mean, its fine and all for basics, but do you only wear basics?
yeah, it's called being poor
― iatee, Saturday, 23 January 2010 01:42 (fourteen years ago) link
frankly, where I live, there are not h&m, uniqlo, or AA stores. so beyond that, yeah....
― mh, Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:31 (fourteen years ago) link
If I had the kind of income that allowed me to purchase $270 pants, why would I even be wearing pants? I'd be wearing pajamas 24/7, swimming naked in my Olympic-sized pool.
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:39 (fourteen years ago) link
that last sentence doesn't make sense unless you're saying you'd be able to buy 270$ pajamas that let you wear them and be naked at the same time
― dyao, Saturday, 23 January 2010 04:54 (fourteen years ago) link
They have space-age fabrics these days, you know
― mh, Saturday, 23 January 2010 05:05 (fourteen years ago) link
are they available in basics, is wha I wanna know
― dyao, Saturday, 23 January 2010 05:15 (fourteen years ago) link
I dressed pretty much the same for the last 4 years. Either a hanes v neck with Marc Jacob Wranglers and cowboy boots or a dress shirt with the same jeans and boots. I usually buy 3 or 4 pairs of the same jean and hanes comes in packs of 5.
― Jacob Sanders, Saturday, 23 January 2010 07:12 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah, h&m's lack of online shopping always rings me off too
I feel you all because I didn't always live in a city with two H&Ms within walking distance of one another. Would gladly trade one of them for an online store for you guys.

Yeah, shoes are so easy to buy! Tons of them look great, 6pm.com has them for like 75% off, if only it could all be as easy as shoes.
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 23 January 2010 07:45 (fourteen years ago) link
outside of sample sales which are basically ny-only anything else is prohibitively expensive bro!! and not all of us have the time to be riflin thru the salvation army
― max, Saturday, 23 January 2010 10:58 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah basically the same story for me in london, I got a decent promotion recently but even still I just sort of think I can look as well as I am happy with just by uniqlo/aa/occasionally somewhere else...
the only thing I will spend a decent amount on is a jacket or a pair of shoes...which I might leave the cheap clothes world to buy. I hate h&m tho, I don't think I've ever seen anything I liked in there.

gotta admit I buy plenty of stuff from gap/ban rep and even a few shirts from j-crew.
jeans: all about lucky. my wife insists on these cause she likes how they fit on me.
dress clothes: Italian suits fit my frame to a "T"/Hugo Boss is my fave but I can do Armani. Zegna shirts are the bomb.
shoes: rockport, johnston & murphy, ecco. i like retro sneakers: adidas puma and onitsuka tigers. got a pair of UGG boots for my b-day. they're OK.
last purchase: 3 pairs of corduroy trou from the gap @ 60% off! I am a bargain hunter.

I buy all mine from outlet malls in Delaware, a few times a year.

I spend money on clothes. I hate unfitted shirts or jeans. Gap, ban rep J.crew all of those clothes are designed for someone other than me. I have never been to uniqlo and H&M just looks poorly designed. I only shop for clothes twice a year but when I don't mind to pay more for what I want. Like everything you get what you pay for.
― Jacob Sanders, Saturday, 23 January 2010 19:19 (fourteen years ago) link
i love clothes. never could spend money on them but i am now. i've been working on jeans but my next efforts will be directed toward good shirts, and a couple of shoes.
― you have to forgive me (surm), Saturday, 23 January 2010 19:26 (fourteen years ago) link
also yeah fashion insiders don't really get to call poor people sad, sorry phil
i mean i don't think anyone in their right mind who could afford better would say to themselves "I KNOW! i'm going to go shop for my entire wardrobe at H&M! YEAH!"
― you have to forgive me (surm), Saturday, 23 January 2010 19:29 (fourteen years ago) link
btw i refuse to go to the gap anymore. i just don't even step in. anything i've ever gotten from them winds up making me feel like a 12yr-old on the way to baseball practice.

Right? I mean, me and my friend/coworker who shop extensively at H&M also joke extensively about how quickly that shit falls apart. It's a damn sight better than Urban Outfitters' rapidly-dissolving garbage, at any rate.

underwear and jumpers: marks and spencers, gutties (trainers): size? and skate shops, t-shirts and hoodies: american apparel (i have t-shirts from american apparel in pink, light blue, green, purple, bright blue, teal, grey, grey and white stripe, probably others i'm forgetting, they're virtually all i wear). Jeans: levi 501s.

shasta maybe knows more here but afaik nudie jeans are made in italy.. that's not to say the actual people making them aren't exploited african immigrants cause i don't know but they claim "no sweatshops". can't stomach h&m for that reason (and that the clothes fall apart) - it's like buying a whole chicken for $2
― Tracer Hand, Sunday, 24 January 2010 00:36 (fourteen years ago) link
I like H&M dress shirts cause they're usually slim fit. hate the boxy department store kinds. but jeez H&M seems 10x better constructed than AA stuff
