Weaver has a well-deserved reputation for durability, and he's more of a competitor than people think. He surpassed 199 innings five times in a six-year span from 2000-05. But he can be gopher-ball prone, and when things go wrong he's a monument to bad body language. He leads the league in slumped shoulders.

Weaver can't decide between Qdoba and Baja Fresh when it comes to what he'd like to have built next to his house. That's why.

Leee, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:42 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw it on my TV. His mouth-wide-open, dead-eyed stare took up a few seconds of the game's highlights. It was pretty awesome.

TACO NECK

Andy K, Wednesday, 11 April 2007 02:13 (seventeen years ago) link

That mouth-wide-open, dead-eyed stare was in response to Drew's homer, which, to be fair, did not look like it was going out until it actually did. It was off the end of the bat and I thought it was a certain fly-out.

TACO NIGHT IN AMERICA

Andy K, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 02:23 (seventeen years ago) link

A close one for Team USA, starter Jered Weaver struck out the first six batters he faced. In the third with two outs, Weaver gave up two runs on a walk, a triple, a single, and a double before retiring Francisco Mendez to end the inning.

Jered had more trouble getting that early-inning third out last night, his shortest MLB "outing" (you know, like albums):

C Monroe struck out swinging.
B Inge struck out swinging.
C Granderson singled to center.
C Granderson stole second.
P Polanco walked.
G Sheffield singled to center, C Granderson scored, P Polanco to third, G Sheffield to second advancing on throw.
M Ordonez reached on infield single to third, P Polanco scored, G Sheffield to third.
C Guillen doubled to right center, G Sheffield scored, M Ordonez to third.
H Carrasco relieved J Weaver.

Jered's line for the night:
1.2 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 70 PITCHES, 1 TACO

Do you really think The Other Weaver is going to continue sucking?

David R., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

I think he'll be somewhere around a volatile 11-12/4.50 this year.

Andy K, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:29 (seventeen years ago) link

His home run and fly ball rates from the minors were not so good, Dave, and he doesn't seem to be healthy so far. Will he be this bad all year? Probably not. But will he be like he was last year? I doubt it.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 16:16 (seventeen years ago) link

WEAVER BROS DOUBLE FEATURE NITE

Jered follows an erratic start with a dominant one, throwing 107 pitches in 5.2 innings with no walks. When he was yanked, he acted exactly as he had after his 70-pitch/1.2-inning loss. Much cursing and nervous head shaking from left to right, eyes at the ground.

Jeff just took the mound.

Andy K, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Jeff just left the mound.

OMG:

2007 - 17 IP, 40 hits, 7 BB & 29 runs, which equals a 15.35 ERA, 2.76 WHIP, and a sterling .465 BAA. Only 2 tacos, tho - dude's on some Atkins kick.

David R., Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:19 (seventeen years ago) link

So far, in 2 innings, Jeff's RAISED his ERA. Kudos!

All the while doubling his taco count.

Andy K, Thursday, 10 May 2007 18:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Possibly his best start of the year:

5.0 10 6 6 0 2 2 14.32

Tigers hitters went 10-for-25, so the BAA has taken a dip as well.

Andy K, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:13 (seventeen years ago) link

59 baserunners in 22 innings. He should be on the Royals w/ numbers like that.

David R., Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Weaver's spot in the Mariners' rotation could be in jeopardy when Felix Hernandez returns from the disabled list Tuesday. The loss came a day after Cha Seung Baek, who took Hernandez's spot in the rotation, beat the Tigers 9-2 in his first career complete game.

"When you're struggling, nothing seems to go right," Weaver said. "I guess that I will have to go more out of the zone than in the zone.

"I really don't have the answer right now," he said.

He lost his first four starts of the 2000 season with Detroit but finished that season with 11 wins. Manager Mike Hargrove wouldn't discuss his future as a starter.

"It's too early to talk about another start for him," Hargrove said.

The worst ever six-game start in the history of MLB, according to Baseball Tonight.

Andy K, Friday, 11 May 2007 09:06 (seventeen years ago) link

The mass pitcher exodus to the DL continues.

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi announced today that the Mariners placed right-handed pitcher Jeff Weaver on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis. Left-handed pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to take Weaver's roster spot.

Weaver, 30, is 0-6 with a 14.32 ERA (35 ER/22.0 IP) in his six starts with the Mariners.

"Jeff is a guy that won't complain about anything and just takes the baseball," said Bavasi. "It became obvious to us when he needed to reach back for that little something extra, his arm strength just wasn't there. Once we talked to him, it became obvious that with some time off and a strength program, he will have an opportunity to return to the type of pitcher we know he can be."
