yeah his last album had at least 2 or 3 good leak records before god awful "Money Maker" came out, I'm guessing that'll be the case here too. I like "Stay Together," though, good shit.

no idea who yells this on what mixtape

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 07:44 (sixteen years ago) link

In a potentially controversial chat with Blender mag, Alicia Keys, 27, says, "Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. Gangsta rap didn't exist."

Ms. Keys, sporting a gold AK-47 pendant around her neck, says she has been reading books by some of the members of the Black Panthers.

She says the feud between East Coast and West Coast rappers, which led to the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., was fueled "by the government and the media, to stop another great black leader from existing."

come on now

huey wouldn't buy into this shit

who's she reading?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 08:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Lemme qualify obv: who the fuck am I to put words in the mouth of Huey P etc, bros probably would rightly have pointed out the hand of white capital in shepherding the crossover success of violent music, and no question east/west was a lotta media bullshit, but "gangsta rap didn't exist?"

Maybe it's just taken out of context and she's making the point that w/o Jerry Heller et al there would be no popular music genre called "Gangsta Rap," but even that's specious obviously. No Medicis = no Sistine, sure, but I'll bet homie still paints a mural somewhere and obv PSK is still out there and Ice T is still doing his thing etc.

Sorry yall I catch feelings when folks talk about the Panthers

yeah fuck alicia keys...the only ploy that ever existed re: black people + music is the same old ploy to make as much money as possible off them. period.

for someone who "has been reading books by some of the members of the Black Panthers" she picked the wrong government-related murder(s)...see: bunchy carter

I didnt really understand that talk upthread about khia's myspace beef but that shit is amazing! You could get caught in there for a few hours... I think its so hilarious that she's all "queen of the south" and thinks she's so great when she had one song about licking her asshole

have you listened to webbie yet-- it's kind of patchy but is good for a few days at a time

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 April 2008 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

its not even close to 'patchy' compared to a rick ross album, come on

deej, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

my bad i should have qualified-- i wish the beats skewed more towards the bass-heavy ugk rips and didn't have as many cheap ass aggro synth beats

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 15 April 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I wore that webbie out weeks ago...my favorite album of the year probably. Trilla is surprisingly unpatchy...I've listened to it from beginning to end a number of times, there really isn't a single must-skip on the whole thing besides khaled's bullshit

I actually listened to savage life 1 yesterday and like the sound of the new one way better xp

unsurprisingly, guilty simpson is by far my album of the year.

there's nothing wrong with underground hip-hop that only rapping about guns, drugs, hoes, and how awesome you are can't fix.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link
