when A MILLION other ways exist to remind yourself of talking points in a way that doesn't come off as a child

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:18 (fourteen years ago) link

This is why we can't get suckered into the myth of "narratives." If Obama got caught writing stuff on his hand, the GOP would say, "SEE? The emperor has no clothes after all! TOLD YOU his smarts were overrated!"

well i've gotten that it's all about perception to you que

not just me. all politics is perception, you fool

Mr. Que, Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:18 (fourteen years ago) link

i think u guys who think it is wrong to laugh at this think we're laughing at something else?

harbl, Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:19 (fourteen years ago) link

i would've been pretty u_u if obama delivered the state of the union with shit written on his palms

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:19 (fourteen years ago) link

it's not a narrative Al, it's someone writing on her hand like a sixth grader.

what is wrong with you people--why is the humor so hard to see.

Mr. Que, Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:19 (fourteen years ago) link

it's equally funny as it is baffling... like why would you even think to do that

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:20 (fourteen years ago) link

It's not funny enough -- not like Putin Rears His Head funny.

And further, to be fair--posting lol jpgs of sarah palin's hand does not mean we/the blogs are not also actively challenging some of the things she says. ILX pol threads are not the sum total of internet political discussion. Sullivan's head exploded last night while he was liveblogging and Greenwald is throwing darts and I hardly expect, come Monday, that that'll be the end of it.

Are you looking for concrete & deeply unlikely stuff like Dems calling her out for objectionable stuff on the floor of the legislature?

and i see that in the last 15 mins i have been xpd to oblivion

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:21 (fourteen years ago) link

also can we just agree that there is no lower form of life than "debating sarah palin on the issues"

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 21:21 (fourteen years ago) link

She used notecards for the speech.

She couldn't use them for the Q&A after the speech, so she thought she could get away with glancing to her hand.

Which is fucking ridiculous and moronic, and all this contrarianism about it not being stupid is bullshit.

you know i am reading that transcript and i can hardly understand a sentence. she's functionally illiterate.

my favorite example of illiteracy from the interview is this

The GOP has some very strong planks in the platform that build a platform that I believe is best to build a strong, safe prosperous nation.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:00 (fourteen years ago) link

thanks, i'll consider that.

i enjoyed the part of the fox interview in which wallace asks her precisely when obama told anyone to "sit down and shut up," and she hasn't got an answer. i really don't understand why sullivan worries about her so much (he is scarily obsessive), it seems to me this is just about fox news putting her on tv for rating$$$$, generally organizations liking the fact that she can raise money, but her fanbase is limited.

tbh she didn't have an answer for pretty much any of his questions.

sullivan is being so annoying w/all this shit, speaking of thirst for narrative: all his stuff about the tea partiers reads like he checked out joan didion's after henry, knew it was awesome, and thought hey, I can do this - forboding tone! get meta when you can! and it's like, no dude, this is 1100 crazy people cheering for a crazy person: any new journalist worth his salt plays this one for laffs, not dread

ok, i read the transcript of palin (good interview, chris wallace). i'm wondering who delivered her certain talking points & who is going to echo them, it is hard to pick them out because she'll use several run-on sentences with bizarre syntax to make one point. mostly she was *trying* to attack obama over issues of national security, which is interesting, since the #1 issue by far (afaik) is job losses and the economy. reminded of last week's abc news roundtable, the only person on the panel who cited national security as the #1 issue facing the country right now was roger ailes.

kicker conspiracy (b. favre ha ha) (daria-g), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:18 (fourteen years ago) link

But, daria, she's clearly concerned with whose advising "our" president.

Inculcate a spirit of serfdom in children (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:19 (fourteen years ago) link

first of all, the #1 issue facing this country is clearly planks and how you can build on those planks

hoos n nem (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:20 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost - sullivan is a little crazy. it seems like - and is probably the case - that he has spent little/no time in flyover country, rural america, anywhere except a couple big cities and rather wealthy new england towns. his ideas about 'the common sense of the american people' as he puts it, always seem completely off base to me. imho most people think palin is not a serious person, she simply has very loud, righteous, defensive, and organized fans, but there aren't that many of them.

wait, now I'm confused as to your opinion here.

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:24 (fourteen years ago) link

mostly she was *trying* to attack obama over issues of national security, which is interesting, since the #1 issue by far (afaik) is job losses and the economy. reminded of last week's abc news roundtable, the only person on the panel who cited national security as the #1 issue facing the country right now was roger ailes.

well the thing about job security & the economy is that's a short term issue, and as you rise with it so will you fall as a commentator, you know? economies cycle in and out of boom and bust, that is how capitalism functions like it or not; good stewardship can made downturns less painful & shore up the gains of higher tides, but can't prevent rises and falls, especially now that the US economy is (inseparably probably) tied to the stock market. so if fox news goes after the dems too much on the economy, and the economy turns around, they'll have to change course, and there will have been time lost, because if the economy turns around, "remember how bad the economy was a year ago" is not going to be a winning line - nobody remembers the bad times during the good times, pretty sure there's something in Proverbs to that effect & it's true. whereas the boogeyman with the explosives in his jockstrap, that guy is a long-term gainer. can ride that horse for decades, no matter what else happens - even if nothing else happens.

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Matt my opinion is it's kinda funny to see writing on hands but the idea that it indicates anything or is useful in sketching out a clearer picture of somebody is absurd - a good new journalist would use this side-fact for a little giggle, not (as sullivan) like some big reveal. because really. who gives a fucking shit if somebody writes shit on their hands. honestly, really, who.

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Sunday, 7 February 2010 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Besides, no one can print the truth: (a) those lost jobs in industrial/manufacturing sectors that went overseas ain't coming back; (b) a sound hand sanitation policy should form the bedrock of any health care overhaul.

53 percent of republicans think she's more qualified than Obama, and she either leads or is among the leaders in polls for the 2012 republican nominee.
