Keystone Light?

mucho (mucho), Friday, 26 January 2007 01:36 (seventeen years ago) link

re keystone beer:

"It is second chance beer of the Coors Brewing Company. Because Keystone comes from the second-chance portion of a batch of Coors, it has a lower price, and as a result is very popular among college students or those on a limited budget. According to the Coors Brewery Tour Guides, Keystone is not a second chance beer, but actually has its own recipe and brewing standards. The price of Keystone is low because Coors does not actively advertise for the Keystone brands."

love that industry spin!!

I've heard that one (infamously racist) frat at my school once put cotton out on their lawn and paid black kids who walked by to pick some and bring it to them on their porch.

A student Republican club at New York University is getting heat for organizing a "Find the Illegal Immigrant" game on campus tomorrow.
Participants in the contest will try to win a gift certificate by being the first to point out a club member wearing a nametag reading "Illegal Immigrant."

thats their game? wtf sooo lame.

jh0shea, Friday, 23 February 2007 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha yeah, I couldn't help but imagine a bunch of unsuspecting Russian and Polish people wandering past on their way to work and suddenly being all "oh shit, is this serious? someone's taking a personal day." The Mexican references on the website just make me sad -- so far as I care, we need MORE Mexicans in NYC, cause the burrito options are a constant disappointment. But yeah, if they're clearly going for the "provocative" / "offending yr sensibilities" angle here, you'd think they could have come up with something somehow more offensive than just putting a nametag on a club member -- that's not even fun as a game.

I saw coverage on the news the night before and started thinking it'd be REALLY fun to put on a nametag that said "illegal immigrant" and just walk around the general vicinity like I was doing something else.

nabisco, Friday, 23 February 2007 22:04 (seventeen years ago) link

From the facebook:

Group Info Name: We'll Never Forget Chief Illiniwek
Type: Sports & Recreation - College Sports
Description: He has performed since 1926. He has become the most hallowed tradition in all college sports. He is loved by students and alumni alike.

In the 80 years that he performed at Memorial Stadium and Assembly Hall, there was no stirring and dignified tradition such as the incomparable Three-In-One. The great majority of the University community embraced him.

Yet recently, a vocal yet annoying minority threatened to try to retire the Chief. These people just did not fit in at the University of Illinois, and tried to make changes and get rid of something everyone loved. They were shot down year after year.

Now, a new enemy has risen, the NCAA. Instead of more important concerns (such as the graduation rates of some athletic programs), they are appealing to this overwhelming minority, and not allowing the University to host athletic tournaments. The University has finally caved in, and announced the retirement of the Chief.

This group is for those who died a little inside when the Chief was retired, and those who think they can still do something about it. Tell everyone you can to join, because Illinois will never forget it's Chief.

These are the men (and one woman) who have portrayed our beloved symbol of this university.

Recent News
Yes, I'm afraid it's true.

Spread the word, invite everyone, I want everyone in Illini Nation to join in so the University may one day have second thoughts about the Chief.

And lets do what we can about it. Like Brandon said, it's time for the silent majority to speak up. Remember we're not the "Sit-Down Illini," we're the "Fighting Illini."

However, there is still hope:

What I'd be interested in knowing is how long that chant has been floating around the fraternity anyway. It hardly seems like something these guys just spontaneously made up. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into a frat that is very proud of reminding folks (especially on their website) that they were founded in the "deep South".

Some nuggets from the "About" section:

Of all existing national social fraternities today, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is the only national fraternity founded in the antebellum South.

The fraternity had fewer than 400 members when the Civil War began. Of those, 369 went to war for the Confederate States and seven for the Union Army
