Cher w/Sonny = soooo classic.

Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), I Got You Babe, The Beat Goes On

El Janko (JasonD), Thursday, 3 February 2005 08:02 (nineteen years ago) link

"the beat goes on" is dreadful, but that's not her fault.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

She has the best goth LP title by a non-goth: "I Paralyze"--and a cover of "Sisters of Mercy" (!)

Without her, could there even be a Bronski Beat?

"Song for the Lonely" easily kicks "The Rising" as the only 9/11 lament that transcends treacle by embracing the mechanics of kitsch to get across a real sense of sadness-hope (there's probably a German word for this.)

Classic, especially for the Sonny & Cher stuff (like Janko said), but not exclusively. Also, for some reason I like "Strong Enough." I understand the love-hate thing regarding "Believe." (I'm surprised I don't simply hate it.) I do think she has a good voice, in a not-at-all ironic way.

And Believe was not revolutionary, it was just annoying studio trickery.

Annoying studio trickery can be revolutionary. (And catchy.) And revolution can be classic. "Gypsies Tramps And Thieves" certainly is.

(And FWIW, she can sure as hell out-act Madonna. Or Whitney Houston or J.Lo or whoever.)

The annoying studio trickery of "Believe" completely changed listeners' expectations for the human voice on a global level. It was utterly completely revolutionary. (and most assuredly annoying to many people).

Disco Cher is best, esp Take Me Home.

Disco Cher is like an entire universe.

Classic. I always wanted to do a cover of "Just Like Jesse James" - dictionary definition of the word Epic - but could never persuade my bandmates.

seven years pass...

There's a good comp of her late 60s Imperial recordings on spotify. Listening to it right now and she or her handlers one picked some great songs to cover.

There's also a Casablanca comp on there which I'll cue up next.

I randomly saw Cher's farewell tour last night. It was surprisingly good!

Did she do her song about how she can't believe she's queen?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 December 2019 18:00 (four years ago) link

No, mostly because after that show, I can't believe she can't believe she's queen.
