i mean at least i am going to. i feel like i'm arguing with sarah palin

how is "babby" horribly formed????? (k3vin k.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Carole King wrote "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" when she was 18. Stevie Wonder wrote "Uptight" when he was 16. Age is a red herring here, folks. If you want to argue there's something inherent about Swift particularly, that's fine, but falling back on ZOMG SHE'S A TEENAGER WHAT COULD SHE POSSIBLY KNOW ABOUT LIFE will get you exactly noplace.

wtf kinda sense does that make, you listen to the sarah palin of music

iatee, Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:07 (fourteen years ago) link

carole king and stevie wonder didn't limit their subject matter to songs about being a teenager. her age comes up because it's all she fucking sings about.

iatee, Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:09 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i think we're the sarah palin in this equation, kev

HOOM gang (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:09 (fourteen years ago) link

uh, my itunes top played artists are john cale, smog, jacques brel and the beach boys

Hey, how about those deep, meaningful, engaged-with-the-world lyrics Mike Love and Brian Wilson wrote when they were 19 and 20 amirite?

El Poopo Loco (Pancakes Hackman), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:10 (fourteen years ago) link

if carole king wrote 'will you still love me after 3rd period' and stevie wonder wrote 'uptight: about homework I don't want to do', people might like those songs less

iatee, Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:10 (fourteen years ago) link

taylor should cover porpoise song imo

i think age gets brought up so much w/r/t to t.swift because a) she mentions it all the time ihs b) most of themes are articulated in p teenage way and c) theres a p omnipresent teenage quality to her music - its brash emotionalism & its immediacy &c - that makes it hard to avoid talking abt.

i mean this is more time than i ever wanted to spend thinking abt taylor swift so w/e its all subjective.

oh & my most played album in itunes is nachtstrom's 17 songs after midnight. so yeah

(Head) (Lamp), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:11 (fourteen years ago) link

haha beach boys lyrics are awful, even when they're good! they had some other things going for em. taylor swift don't.

these rappers only rap about "pimpin and bitches"

how is "babby" horribly formed????? (k3vin k.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:15 (fourteen years ago) link

Dude, she's a teenage girl. Teenage girls tend to lead pretty insular lives. I'm okay with her sticking to that for now, because she does it pretty well.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:19 (fourteen years ago) link

those guys aren't rappers, you should prolly listen to more old music kev xp

iatee, Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Next people are going to me telling me that I should check out Metric for some really intense female songwriting with depth, as i'm just fronting with this enjoying things that are obviously good business. Confusing place ILM.

xp dude ive been looking for that for so long, i have cranky dorks on ilm to thank for finally finding it

how is "babby" horribly formed????? (k3vin k.), Thursday, 4 March 2010 22:29 (fourteen years ago) link

idk i think "lyrical depth" requires a distance & nuance that a 20 yo or 18yo or w/e the fuck she was when she wrote those songs doesnt really have.

well i said she was honest and artful, which doesn't necessarily mean "deep." i don't actually think she's all that "deep," but otoh patti smith is "deep" and some of her stuff is way the hell more embarrassing than any taylor swift songs. i think taylor swift writes exceptionally good pop songs about the experiences of being a teenager. that's plenty for me.

there are lots of Taylor Swift songs I haven't heard, but I do know that if I'm at a place where I'm practically forced to listen to country music radio and I hear "Love Story," then I'm pretty happy. And if I hear "Tim McGraw" (the song) then it's been a good fucking day...

I would probably characterize "You Belong With Me" as enjoyable fluff, but I don't think it's a totally inappropriate candidate for song of the year...I like "Daniel" and "Obsessed" (wz this even nominated?) a little more, and "Paparazzi" a little less...

I just listened to White Horse for the first time...that's a pretty affecting song...

for all the haters who are like "it's ok for teenage girls, but be real, bros..." it's possible that you are letting the slick, produced mainstream pop-country sound and the accordant teenage wholesome good-girl image distract you from the songwriting smarts that are clearly there...

search: wolf-kidult man (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 5 March 2010 17:48 (fourteen years ago) link

plus, you never know, maybe there was actual teenage girls who post on here. it would be pretty crazy i know, everyone knows girls don't REALLY like music, not proper music like us guys. AM I RIGHT GUYS? YEAH! WHOO!
