NYT "No motive has been established for the gunman who wounded two officers outside the Pentagon Metro station."

Sure, right, no motive whatsoever. Dude just...snapped, one day. It was probably the liberal media that drove him to it, but we won't know that for sure til we hear from Glenn Beck on the subject.

Police are hunting Derrick Bird, 52, following an incident in Duke Street, Whitehaven, and other places across West Cumbria.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that a number of people have been injured after shots were fired in the Whitehaven, Seascale and Egremont areas this morning.

"There are a number of fatalities and police are working to identify the individuals and inform relatives. Ambulance crews are in attendance across the area."

Bird, of Rowrah near Frizington, is believed to be driving a dark grey/silver Citreon Picasso, registration ND55 ZFC.

Anyone who sees him or his vehicle should call 999 and should not approach him.

My first thought on reading this was "Who the hell drives a Citreon in America?"

Always sad to see this thread revived though.

11 'shootings', not necessarily killed.

'several killed' isn't sounding good. his body has been recovered.

Glenda Pears, who runs L&G Taxis, said both Mr Bird and the Duke Street victim were self-employed drivers - and friends.

She said Mr Bird had been a taxi driver for 23 years and was divorced with two sons, and described him as a “real nice man”.

She said: “We just don’t know what’s happened. The lad that’s been killed was friends with him. They used to stand together having a craic on the rank. He was friends with everybody and used to stand and joke on Duke Street.”

“He’s such a nice lad. One of my drivers was talking to him last night. He was just working as normal and was going to go to Tesco’s to get chicken.”

12 shot dead in lake district

May be half naked, but knows a good headline when he sees it (darraghmac), Wednesday, 2 June 2010 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

At least 12 people were fatally wounded today after a taxi driver went on the rampage with a shotgun in the Lake District before killing himself.

Derrick Bird (52), a divorced father-of-two, murdered two colleagues in the centre of the coastal town of Whitehaven this morning before driving across Cumbria shooting other victims, apparently at random.

Several hours later, following a major manhunt amid calls for residents to stay indoors, police found his body 30km away in woods near the hamlet of Boot.

The exact number of casualties was not known but Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament earlier that at least five people had been killed. Police said at least 25 people had been injured and denied reports that the gunman's mother was among the victims.

Latest rolling headline on the BBC site. I really hope there are no more deaths.

I can't decide what's worse - BBC News rolling coverage - which was basically someone standing in the street saying how shocked everyone was or the fact that they abandoned that because some footballers were about to, maybe, get on a plane.

Nice bit of speculation along the 'Broken Britain' lines from the Telegraph:

One of the central lines of inquiry surrounded the theory that a row had developed over the will of Bird’s mother, Mary, who is seriously ill.

The solicitor — Kevin Commons — may have been advising the family.

It was also reported that Bird had initially armed himself with two guns on Tuesday night, but was disarmed by a friend.

Bird is then believed to have sought medical help at a local hospital for his fragile mental state, only to be turned away.

Solicitor, twin brother, fellow taxi drivers he'd rowed with.

Makes me wonder how many people I've had work-related arguments with the past year or two have access to firearms.

All quite peculiar for me - I've not lived up there for 12 years but every place they mention I know quite well. Rented a flat 30sec from the taxi rank, been to and through Gosforth, Egremont and Seascale many times, went on a walk to Ennerdale Bridge once through Frizington and Rowrah. Pretty sure I recognised the Scouse cabbie they interviewed on R4 this morning.

with you there, HM.

ITV news guy actually just said: "Bird made complaints to police recently about drunken passengers in his cab, should they have put two and two together given that he has a firearms license?". Well clearly yes, if they had access to Minority Report style technology! What absolute nonsense.

Can't wait for the Telegraph to call for someone to Ban This Sick Filth:

Derrick Bird, the Cumbria gunman, spent the night before his killing spree watching a violent film at his best friend's house before asking, as he left: "Do you think I'm paranoid?"

[...]

As they talked, they watched On Deadly Ground, an action film involving multiple killings and starring Steven Seagal, which was on television.

Ala. prof charged in brother's 1986 shooting death

CANTON, Mass. — A biology professor charged with killing three of her colleagues at an Alabama university has been indicted in the 1986 shooting death of her brother in Massachusetts, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Authorities had originally ruled that the shooting of Amy Bishop's brother was an accident, but they reopened the case after Bishop was charged in February with gunning down six of her colleagues at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, killing three.

Bishop, 45, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 18-year-old brother, Seth, Norfolk District Attorney William Keating said.

Keating said he did not understand why charges were never brought against Bishop.

"I can't give you any explanations, I can't give you excuses, because there are none," he said. "Jobs weren't done, responsibilities weren't met and justice wasn't served."
