love the stories about rahm, sounds like something out of in the loop

"Let me tell you a story about Rahm Emanuel," Massa started. "I was a congressman in my first eight weeks, and I was in the congressional gym, and I went down and I worked out and I went into the showers...I'm sitting there showering, naked as a jaybird and here comes Rahm Emanuel not even with a towel wrapped around his tush, poking his finger in my chest, yelling at me because I wasn't going to vote for the president's budget. Do you know how awkward it is to have a political argument with a naked man?

max, Monday, 8 March 2010 20:23 (fourteen years ago) link

it's like traficant, but instead of crazy hair, it's all about shlong hanging out

goole, Monday, 8 March 2010 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

the whole story could have been pretty easily an episode of ITL, incl. the sex harassment stuff

max, Monday, 8 March 2010 20:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Massa also got into all sorts of other things, and we’re not sure we’ve ever heard a congressman talk this much about naked men — especially one who’s quitting under cloud of allegations about sexual harassment.

But Massa spent an awful lot of time recalling circumstances in his life with unclothed men, including the angry Rahm encounter, sailors sliding naked down chutes, and catching his shipmate in a rather private act and slapping him on the leg.

wha-?

tbqh when i first saw these headlines i thought it was another reid/rush style racey-race language flap, but the sentences didn't really work that way

I'm gonna form a band called "Al Queda 7" and dedicate our 1st album to the Cheney family and that Bush speechwriter hack Thiessen who now writes for the W. Post and has that ridiculous book out defending torture.

Haha, this is just about everybody in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana . . . the shortening of infinitives is a very Midwestern thing. (cf. "This shirt needs washed" vs. "This shirt needs to be washed," "I need to shower" vs. "I need to take a shower," etc.)

El Poopo Loco (Pancakes Hackman), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 13:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Never heard "this shirt needs washed" but cannot imagine anyone having a problem with "shower" as a verb - like I can't wrap my head around that ever not being correct.

joygoat, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:07 (fourteen years ago) link

Ditto. Tracer, sometimes I think Europe has warped your brain.

I mean would you object to "bathing"?? Unless you think that means "going swimming" in which case you are an Victorian. Or European (again).

I mean would you object to "bathing"??

If so, Europe has REALLY warped your brain (and your nose).

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Does anyone actually say that?? "I was showering yesterday.."

I am horrified.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

You are ridiculous.

"Are you going to shower after dinner?"

"Shower you with praise, you mean? Well let's see how good you cook that steak first."

"No, with your urine"

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I could get behind "This shirt needs washing", if that's what you meant, PH. Not "This shirt needs washed", though, which makes no sense.

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:19 (fourteen years ago) link

"this shirt needs washed" is a brit thing shurely?

i will shower after work today, as a european btw

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I actually think French has warped my brain - "to shower" should be / is a reflexive verb in the sense that you guys are using it - one showers oneself - yet English doesn't have an automatic reflexivity indicator ("SE doucher") so when people say this I get this creeping uncertainty about whether they might turn the shower on me or something

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

How good you cook that steak?? WTF???

Mind you, yesterday I heard someone on the street saying "we drank x number of bottles between the five of us" and mentally corrected him to "among the five of us" so I might be nuts.

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

"This shirt needs washed" sounds very Alabama-idiomatic to me; I can easily imagine my grandmother saying that.

The "was graduated" thing inspired a weak belt sander joke but its moment has passed.

the archetypal ghetto hustler (history mayne), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

in fairness when I say "I'm going to shower" I'm never quite clear whether I'm going to do it myself or spray Tracer with the hose

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

yet English doesn't have an automatic reflexivity indicator ("SE doucher")

However, Americans do have a reflexive indicator for this ("HE douchebag")

Tracer has a little point. 'I was taking a shower' is certainly more the standard here than 'I was showering' but the latter doesn't sound all that odd to me.

we say "shower" as a verb in europe

wait are we now accepting that the uk is in europe

mookieproof, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I get his point about reflexive verbs in French, though.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah well neither are that common, there's a limit to the number of interesting things that can happen while you're showering.

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

You don't cook good, you cook well. Are you sure you're Tracer Hand?

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

anyway in western pennsylvania we say "this shirt needs worshed"
