the archetypal ghetto hustler (history mayne), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

ehhh having a problem with using "shower" like that is kinda like "it's 'was graduated!!!'"

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:16 (fourteen years ago) link

maybe tracer just doesn't like gerunds

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Does anyone actually say that?? "I was showering yesterday.."

I am horrified.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

You are ridiculous.

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

I say, in the fondest way. But you are.

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

"Are you going to shower after dinner?"

"Shower you with praise, you mean? Well let's see how good you cook that steak first."

"No, with your urine"

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I could get behind "This shirt needs washing", if that's what you meant, PH. Not "This shirt needs washed", though, which makes no sense.

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:19 (fourteen years ago) link

"this shirt needs washed" is a brit thing shurely?

i will shower after work today, as a european btw

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I actually think French has warped my brain - "to shower" should be / is a reflexive verb in the sense that you guys are using it - one showers oneself - yet English doesn't have an automatic reflexivity indicator ("SE doucher") so when people say this I get this creeping uncertainty about whether they might turn the shower on me or something

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

How good you cook that steak?? WTF???

Mind you, yesterday I heard someone on the street saying "we drank x number of bottles between the five of us" and mentally corrected him to "among the five of us" so I might be nuts.

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:21 (fourteen years ago) link

"This shirt needs washed" sounds very Alabama-idiomatic to me; I can easily imagine my grandmother saying that.

The "was graduated" thing inspired a weak belt sander joke but its moment has passed.

"this shirt needs washed" is a brit thing shurely?

wtf

never heard this

the archetypal ghetto hustler (history mayne), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

in fairness when I say "I'm going to shower" I'm never quite clear whether I'm going to do it myself or spray Tracer with the hose

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

yet English doesn't have an automatic reflexivity indicator ("SE doucher")

However, Americans do have a reflexive indicator for this ("HE douchebag")

Tracer has a little point. 'I was taking a shower' is certainly more the standard here than 'I was showering' but the latter doesn't sound all that odd to me.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:23 (fourteen years ago) link

Laurel sometimes I cook steaks..?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I've been graduated from the shower and now I take baths

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

we say "shower" as a verb in europe

wait are we now accepting that the uk is in europe

mookieproof, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

I get his point about reflexive verbs in French, though.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah well neither are that common, there's a limit to the number of interesting things that can happen while you're showering.

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

You don't cook good, you cook well. Are you sure you're Tracer Hand?

The other side of genetic power today (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

anyway in western pennsylvania we say "this shirt needs worshed"

mookieproof, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Laurel sometimes I cook steaks..?

Good vs. well, methinks is her point.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:25 (fourteen years ago) link

"This shirt needs washed" sounds Shakespearian, like "men must needs abide."

kingkongvsgodzilla, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

One might cook good, Laurel, though I think it would more likely be something idiomatic such as 'cook up some good' and might even cook good well, with enough practice.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

but why in the fuck was the guy sitting down to (take a) shower?

In what bizarre land does "good" rhyme with "cook"? The Kanyeverse?

we call him black Nev coz he's black & his names Neville (HI DERE), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

you have to throw 'gook' in as a link, which is frankly a troubling word to get into a couplet convincingly

157 new answers and 50+ of them on verbalising "shower" ILuILx don't ever change

the pity party of tiny feet (onimo), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:29 (fourteen years ago) link

but why in the fuck was the guy sitting down to (take a) shower?

I will admit to sitting down to take a shower in two circumstances: In Paris, we oddly never had shower curtains in any of the places I lived, and the shower head was at the end of a hose so to avoid spraying water everywhere, I sat. Some high-end showers in hotels I've stayed in had a bench seat at the far end of the shower upon which I have sat. In both cases it's optimal for washing one's feet.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

i would sit in the shower if there was some sort of chair in there -- sitting on the floor on the other hand is monumentally savage

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:32 (fourteen years ago) link

shower cubicle/jacuzzi is good times iirc

quiz show flat-track bully (darraghmac), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:33 (fourteen years ago) link

If he'd just come out of the gym you'd expect it to be a regular walk-in stand-up communal dude's shower room. I'd be kind of freaked out to see someone sitting on the fucking floor of a shower room.

i would sit in the shower if there was some sort of chair in there

Who puts chairs in a shower?

J0rdan, meet my friend, Mr. Hangover. Hangover, this is J0rdan. Be kind to him when you find him sitting in the shower.

Lee Dorrian Gray (J0hn D.), Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I love the juxtaposition of 'monumental' and 'savage'.

The very decrepit or people w/leg injuries

btw Mr. Hangover looks like this:

i'm saying if theoretically if there was some sort of chair in the shower, i would sit down

and yeah i've sat in the shower before while super hungover -- but that's a bit different than a public shower

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 9 March 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm assuming this dude isn't decrepit or crippled (given that he'd just had a workout) but is a disgusting savage of some sort.
