Definitely some of the most innovative gameplay I've ever experienced.

That's too bad, because it FINALLY starts a little bit after the national anthem.

I feel absolute embarrasment and humiliation within the msgbrd context (Z S), Sunday, 14 March 2010 04:06 (fourteen years ago) link

I love the way the gravity feels. Really seems like they got it just right.

Your body is a spiderland (polyphonic), Sunday, 14 March 2010 04:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, but fuck those guys with the reflective shields. It's kinda like, there's just ONE too many things to think about, balancing my jumps against the gravity, the changing rock size, grabbing rocks to throw (which changes the gravity situation again, holy shit!) throwing the rocks at the dudes AND they bounce off?! Awesome concept though.

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 28 March 2010 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Is the joke that it doesn't work?

Mordy, Sunday, 28 March 2010 02:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Got it working. :) Great game.

Mordy, Sunday, 28 March 2010 02:46 (fourteen years ago) link

i like that the games i put up here after steamshovel harry are all suspect

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 28 March 2010 04:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Specter Spelunker was fun! I do have to say I don't love the 3D engine, which feels kind of incidental to the shrinking/growing gimmick... the 3D/perspective thing just makes it hard to figure out distances, which is a problem in a platformer. But beautiful concept.

yeah imagine an updated version with amazing graphics that you could zoom into at crazy magnification. has great potential.

(xp) 3d engine?! did i miss a bit? only 3d bit i saw was the snowdome, i went into the house inside and the game ended.

the big pink suede panda bear hurts (ledge), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 09:07 (fourteen years ago) link

it uses a browser-3d flash thingy, so yeah look at the edges of the scenery closely. also i think it's used for the zooming in technique.

bracken free ditch (Ste), Tuesday, 30 March 2010 12:52 (fourteen years ago) link

the guy didn't really try very hard on the graphics - if you've seen other games done in Unity they're pretty impressive for web games (see everything done by Blurst, like Off-Road Velociraptor Safari and Time Donkey)

aw cmon, i beat it in like three minutes!

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 3 April 2010 16:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, just short enough for the cuteness to last and not long enough to go "is this all there is to this?" Nice thing.

lol, particularly the sunken treasure level and "act like a hero"

Convenience Fish (snoball), Monday, 5 April 2010 22:10 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, act like a hero was great, just beat it. cool ending puzzle, too!

we should likely talk about tiger woods EA online.
Just wasted an hour. It's compulsive.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 21:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha, I was tempted to post about that. Continue to be impressed with the kind of stuff they can do in a web browser now (though it uses Unity) - wish Pangya was playable like this!

tinycastle was cool too but... too tiny

tiny castles is great; a half-hour well spent.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 7 April 2010 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Tiny Castles really turned me off honestly - - awkward and unresponsive controls with a lot of classic platformer no-nos (delay between attack button and attacking, can't attack while jumping, can't effectively jump past a ladder, can't attack from ladders) and arbitrary non-puzzles where everything on the screen just sort of changes when you hit a checkpoint, no way to predict that and no real control over it anyway. I freely admit that this is sort of out of whack with my well-documented LOVE LOVE LOVE for "Ultimate Wizard" on the Commodore 64 but there you go.

Nice soundtrack though!

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 8 April 2010 19:57 (fourteen years ago) link

I liked it because it was quick and diverting (and free).

Nhex, Friday, 30 April 2010 18:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Best fit in a way is playing as Contra guy, which perfectly captures the Contra experience: when you get the Spread Gun everything is just over-the-top wonderful, and then as soon as you lose it everything's fucked.

Really hard to switch over to Samus after that, losing the whole duck-and-shoot thing in favor of the bombs.
