all the fiscal responsibility talk always makes me lol, the suposed pro business party doesnt understand the concept of 'investing' at all - they really think theres a finite number of dollars and that they should get to hold them

xpost -- Wise advice obv. but isn't it simple majority in the Senate?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:54 (fourteen years ago) link

digby's right. now, to totally look past that, i wonder if there's time for this congress to pass one or two more "big bills" after HCR finishes, e.g., financial reform and/or immigration reform?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:54 (fourteen years ago) link

xp to digby, harry ried says he has the votes all lined up, but yeah who know

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

"Immigration reform" = Lindsey Graham pandering nonsense.

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link

do they really need lindsey graham? i thought on that issue, there were other republicans willing to break-ranks (even mccain, maybe).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:56 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost - re: angry people, i've never understood it. oh, i'm paying so much in taxes blablabla poor me, we're taxed to death in this country, why can't everyone use Personal Responsibility to buy their own health insurance so we don't have to pay for anyone but ourselves. people are so greedy imho.

people are so greedy, and have no idea whats really in their best interest

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

they like medicare, tho.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Daniel, I don't care about any current member of the GOP "breakign ranks" anymore. These people had their chance. They have no interest in governing. It's the Beltway people (like that fool Jonathan Karl on ABC's "This Week") who insist on the virtue of "consensus" and "bipartisanship."

A minor point, but an indicative one: after Karl whined for the third time about what had happened since the great bipartisan coalition that passed the Civil Rights Act, Tom Daschle says, "Well, it was a different GOP then." Karl didn't even have the temerity to ask, "Well, it was a different Democratic party then too -- so racist that it needed GOP votes to break the filibuster."

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:59 (fourteen years ago) link

graham says he'll pull his support for immigration reform if HCR passes. but if he is, ATM, the only republican senator to support this blueprint for immigration reform, i thought there were at least a few others that might replace graham. i don't care about bipartisanship; i do care about passing immigration reform.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Rep. Glenn Nye (D-VA) will again vote no.

is he from a very conservative district?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i think that is an altered photograph.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:05 (fourteen years ago) link

lindsey graham is much curvier than that.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought Graham was kvetching about the now-ditched deem and pass thing.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:09 (fourteen years ago) link

oh. yeah i think that's right.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:11 (fourteen years ago) link

i just spent fifteen minutes trying to get coverage of this to work on msnbc.com and somehow forgot that it would be super boring recitals of chapters of legislation.

we just have to get over it that's science (schlump), Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:16 (fourteen years ago) link

ice cr?m i was just coming here to post that link. i think it's a very revealing post, and TV exchange.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:19 (fourteen years ago) link

icey, glad you think this is Real Reform, whatever makes you cheerleaders happy.

Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

hang on, we want the immigration reform bill to pass? from what i saw of it it's basically an extension of that bullshit clinton law?

k3vin k., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Pomeroy now a yes vote.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:22 (fourteen years ago) link

we want everything to pass cuz it's Obama scorekeeping, content is old-fashioned.

Fusty Moralizer (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link

its pretty funny how the teabaggers are getting so worked up abt this all acting like its some hot button social issue, i mean are they against healthcare, do they wish to burn hospitals to the ground, wouldnt they rather just go back to hating mexicans or freaking out abt school prayer

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link

icey, glad you think this is Real Reform, whatever makes you cheerleaders happy.

GIMME AN "H"! GIMME A "C"! GIMME AN "R"! What does that spell? An incrementalist, ineffective, morally-indefensible illusion of policy for which the party should be ashamed!

it is yes actual real reform morbsy, its not as good as say medicare for all, but its better than what we have now. so basically YAY for progress, BOO we are not denmark.

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

i still don't understand why they didn't just propose to open medicare to everyone as the public option. what republican would oppose medicare? (openly, at least)

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

it was proposed, didnt get anywhere, but i think it is an idea that has the potential to catch on in the mid term

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:28 (fourteen years ago) link

from TPM:

Mob Rule?

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) just told our Brian Beutler that a short time ago, a protestor watching the House proceedings from the gallery got rowdy, yelling "Kill the Bill." He resisted four Capitol Hill police officers trying to remove him from the gallery and as this was happening he was cheered loudly by dozens of House Republicans.

"I've never seen members of the House cheering on a guy resisting being kicked out of the gallery," said Frank. "It's a dangerous situation and the Republicans are cheering him on."

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:30 (fourteen years ago) link

kinda wish i was there rite now, quite a scene

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

apparently getting past republican obstruction tactics will delay the vote until late tonight?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:31 (fourteen years ago) link

They were already predicting a late vote. Earliest was going to be 9 pm.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

from matthew yglesias' twitter feed: "Protesters calling Frank a faggot again today. His partner is with him, recording this time." should make interesting video.

seriously, the outrageous tactics of these protestors should be compiled and used by democrats in the november elections.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:33 (fourteen years ago) link

i thought about walking over there for a little while, but it's probably not that exciting. but i still might, just because it's too nice to stay in all day & i could use the exercise

good times.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:35 (fourteen years ago) link

jus tryina give people a lil healthcare, lets all be cool

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Like so much that comes slithering out of Congress, the Health Care Reform bill is an unwieldy, self-conflicted mess with some truly objectionable fannydangles. But it does have a few sops in it for the great mass of ordinary people who get sick and need medical care. The major one I can think of is the abolition of "pre-existing conditions" as a huge loophole for insurance companies to deny coverage.

Because this bill is so complex and filled with shadowy details, it seems best to wait and see how it is administered IRL. With luck, some super-bright staff person, liberal variety, has slipped in a few key paragraphs that will allow the administration the leeway to do good things, as it drafts the regulations that govern how they will get this steam donkey up and running.

ice cr?m, Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:41 (fourteen years ago) link

totally thinking of going to the hill to investigate b/c of watching fox for the last hour (for the lulz) in which they're doing these v close-in shots of angry tea partiers. i have a hunch there are probably like a hundred protestors total still there, if that, but they're filming it to make it look like there's a ton of them

The lack of a public option is really shitty; I mean with all the venom the other side is throwing against this HCR bill, would it really be any worse if the public option was included? Because to the Tea Party idiots it may as well be in there now.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 21 March 2010 18:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Daria probably OTM about misrepresenting the number of protesters.
