for some reason today i'm listening to the "what the fuck is a jay electronica" tape and it sounds a lot better to me...i wish he'd do more southern style shit though, the song w/flip is great...but he's pretty nice, even though he has this sorta chameleonesque thing going on, like what type of rapper are you dude?

come to think i'm actually really liking this. dude over some of my favorite beats of the last couple years and he raps like he's a hip-hop head instead of hustler or a self-consciously insular wordy underground weirdo. it's like we grew up loving the same records and where i decided to write about it he decided to make it.

I still find his voice unpleasant, but at least he's not talking about sex.

i think it goes without saying that plies should be rapping over creeping, booming beats instead of keyboard heavy pop stuff and that he should be using his voice to spit guttural threats instead of gross come-ons but im still surprised at how good that song is

the more i hear songs from that the less i can understand how that stuff can sound good to anyone. even the production is pretty flat.

i think the production is flat because people are ripping them from Youtubes and shitty leaks and yelling "ExtravaggggggggGANGSTA RADIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" on them

maybe flat was the wrong word, but just cheap, cheesy, poor choices in drum and synth sounds. dude's beats have always sounded somewhat naked w/out samples but these just sound bad, and he's either got a really cheap version of AutoTune or he's putting a filter on it that makes it sound shitty.

that's exactly what i like about it though. It's very vulnerable and naked. I almost think it's a double standard that bombastic hip-hop types can't be stripped down and introspective and lo-fi. It's like calling Nebraska "shitty-sounding."

if the other two tracks are like the 9 I heard, then this will be top 5 for me for sure.

ehh, I might agree if I thought he was making writing songs that were actually thoguhtful and introspective, not just hooting "you looooose" and "how could you be so Dr. Evil?" at some poor girl that put up with his infantile shit for years.

you're def right about him being a misogynistic emo crybaby, but I just see that as Kanye's version of cleansing. I'm not always on his side, but it's great watching him vent. I don't have to agree with Ice Cube talking about burning down a Korean grocery either.

All I know is I agree with eskay's opinion on "Tell Everybody That You Know" that, "the Weezy “verse” on this is inexcusable." I mean come on. Dude's brain is clearly syrup mush at this point. And I thought that was the case six months ago.
