also Abbott's grasp of handwritten font is pretty superb,

a) this is some nonsense tautology
b) do you mean her lettering?

one of the jones boys (sic), Monday, 5 April 2010 12:15 (fourteen years ago) link

a) no, because b) yes - I mean her ability to letter with consistency in a number of different styles - almost like typed fonts, but handwritten

william mcgonadal's tay ridge disaster (acoleuthic), Monday, 5 April 2010 12:18 (fourteen years ago) link

so, who are a few good letterers (iyo) and bad letterers (iyo) that you're scaling against?

(PS a) yes because a font is specifically not handwriting, and this is not a hand-designed font like _____ or ______ or ______ )

one of the jones boys (sic), Monday, 5 April 2010 12:53 (fourteen years ago) link

I just mean I like the styles of lettering she's able to conjure! It's not a competition! Jeez! Although she does reference William Blake...

Nah I’m not fronting on you Abbott – I dig Campbell and McCay and the Bunch, y'know! I just thought since Louis’s dropping inherently comparative terms like “superb” wrt specifics of your lettering, this could open a fruitful avenue for further ILC discussion – like is creativity at designing different styles for different speakers and modes, and using those consistently across a story or oeuvre – say in the mode of Abe Kanegson, Dave Sim, Todd Klein, Gaspar Saladino, Dan Clowes – a marker of excellence (if not superbity*) here, or is LJ (or IKR or E3!) thinking more along the lines of Panter, Ellsworth, Furie... a looseness that matches the brut aspects of the art, if you like? I’m usu. the only person to ever mention lettering here*, would be really good to get some more talk from people that have considered opinions about the integration of text and art

*and then mainly just noting works I found literally unreadable do to their placement in a post-Starkings p-line world!

I basically meant I really dig how A's writing looks, and how it can change character depending on its situation and retain a strong voice...I am *not* an expert, and if there's a debate with specifics, I'm lost. However, I'm glad sic enforced some descriptive rigour on my part; that's always welcome.

how is abbott formed (Abbott), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 02:39 (fourteen years ago) link

sic in no way did I think you were fronting on me or my lettering. I seriously am sometimes illegible, and just lazY (like first panel of "suicider prevention comics," not whiting out mangled word "attention" and redoing it so it's legible but just reglossing it on the next line in parentheses, which is like next level lazy). I could say a lot of things about the formation of letters as a mood element, and a visual element, or as "the third mind," but I could say them a lot better in an IRL soapbox after a couple of beers than I could by typing them here. Save to say one of the things I am giving to YTTH I originally did the text with an actually typeface, and never have I felt artistically wronger, or more false, or more sterile.

how is abbott formed (Abbott), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 02:49 (fourteen years ago) link

What I mean is, I plan to redo the words by hand.

how is abbott formed (Abbott), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 02:50 (fourteen years ago) link

It might bear noting that at the time I had this personal aesthetic theory (for myself, not rly to be applied elsewhere) that typos, and mistakes, and etc., should never be changed and always laid bare. That they added a sort of humane (=flawed) honesty and richness to written affairs. In drawing mistakes get turned into other things, but you can't really do that with words. – they're not at all viusually flexible. Leaving writing errors bare seemed to introduce to words the element I liked in drawing of "aw damn I drew this mouth all wrong, I guess I'll make it into an elephant coming out of a teapot."

how is abbott formed (Abbott), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 02:56 (fourteen years ago) link

By hand-lettering you've already leapt past the slothocracy of cut&paste webcomics. HIGH FIVES!

three months pass...

Guys, I just read a book on how to make comics and my mind is blown. This is going to sound really, incredibly stupid and naive (and it is): I didn't know people drew comics at bigger sizes than usual. This explains so much.

could be a bad day for (Abbott), Friday, 16 July 2010 00:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Scott McCloud wants you to make comix Abbott

What book was it, Abbott?

Nhex, Friday, 16 July 2010 04:01 (thirteen years ago) link

most comic bk art was drawn '2 up' (ie 2 times larger than the printed page) until the late 1960s, when it went '1 and a half up' (it has pretty much stayed there ever so since) - you can really notice the difference w/ jack kirby's comics, for example.

some artists - i'm struggling to think of examples, other than trevor von eeden of all ppl - DO draw 'same size'. maybe (sic) will know if or how image size makes a diff to strips created on a computer, where there is no physical page as such.

Ward Fowler, Friday, 16 July 2010 06:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Chris Weston draws same size, then blows it up to submission size and re-inks it. I have a Ministry of Space page that proves it.

Hey Jabulani! Pope of four four two. (aldo), Friday, 16 July 2010 14:40 (thirteen years ago) link

That's crazy, Weston's work is super-detailed.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Friday, 16 July 2010 14:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Not that I doubt you, I just find it crazily surprising.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Friday, 16 July 2010 14:58 (thirteen years ago) link

The book was, in fact, Scott McCloud's Making Comics. And, that is an interesting fact, Ward. I had been drawing everything same size, which I think is pretty obvious? It's really hard to write legibly that small.

I think the only comic I didn't think was drawn at the usual size was the "Bazooka Joe" comics in the bubblegum wrappers.

I was a kid when they came out. We wore white pegged pants and played with yoyos while listening to the Beach Boys."

I don't get it? "Chat" is pronounced "shah", does that mean something in English?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 December 2015 09:28 (eight years ago) link

It's a reference to a refrain in a song in the musical Hamilton, by Lin-Manuel Miranda. You'd probably enjoy it - it's the story of US founding father Alexander Hamilton, in which every role is taken by a performer of colour, most of the lyrics are rapped, and is riddled with quotes from classic hip-hop songs.

Biggest new hit on Broadway this year, and highest-selling original cast recording since Camelot.

(I enjoyed Abbott's cartoon, and would have been likewise baffled if I hadn't seen the show the day after learning it existed, two months ago.)

glandular lansbury (sic), Wednesday, 23 December 2015 12:27 (eight years ago) link

Okay, thanks for the explanation and the link (dope tune, btw!), I get it now! But isn't the "t" in the French word silent, so it doesn't actually sound like "shot"?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 December 2015 19:55 (eight years ago) link

I'm sorry about my pedanticism... Maybe the North American French pronounce it differently though? :)

Tuomas, Thursday, 24 December 2015 09:43 (eight years ago) link

my French is terrible but the t isn't silent when followed by a vowel, also iirc in a lot of francophone songs they pronounce the silent letters which suggests to me that the French, unlike the Finnish, employ poetic license
