magnets how do they work, no magnet experts need answer, fuckin liars; magic is how they work btw

~cankles~ (ice cr?m), Friday, 9 April 2010 14:16 (fourteen years ago) link

does anyone know why they got so optimistic and zen-like? what's going on in Shaggy and J's personal life that has made them so happy? besides the fact that they are now making millions

This was the overarching storyline behind the act the whole time. They started out as regular gangbangers who were pulled turned into supernatural thug clowns by the Dark Carnival to warn humanity to give up their evil ways and embrace Jesus. No I am not kidding; it's pretty explicit when you follow what they've put out from beginning onwarads and even at their most depraved, they've always been on some "you're getting fucked up because you've done wrong" shit.

Insane Clown Posse Fans. No, they really do exist, BITCH. My question is.....WHY, JUGGALOS!?

☀ ☃ (am0n), Friday, 9 April 2010 15:20 (fourteen years ago) link

The hilarious thing is that they were talking about Shangri-La like back in 1995 when Riddle Box came out but people were still shocked and amazed when they went "oh btw we're massive Christians, you just got SAVED lol"

Wood shavings! Laughing out loud! (HI DERE), Friday, 9 April 2010 15:20 (fourteen years ago) link

WHAAAAAAAAA

The album's last story is again about love lost, a man whose wife dies spends his time in remorse firing projectiles into the sky in an effort to kill the angels for taking away his wife. Eventually he does hit his wife, to bring her down from the heavens and ask her why she left him. Very, very disturbing. Of course, the dead angel doesn't give him any answers.

i mean, again, i know this sounds like jaded whiney whatev. but serious question:

why is everyone (on waaaaay more sites than ILX) acting like they've never seen a juggalo before? ICP is all of sudden a hot, followable hipster meme in 2009-2010 when like the clown existed way before most people even had the internet.

Lift Your Skinny Jeans Like Antennas to Heaven (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:14 (fourteen years ago) link

At age four, Joe and his brother caught a butterfly, and both were fascinated by the vibrant colors and overall peacefulness of the creature.[2] They kept the butterfly in a jar overnight, and intended to free it the following morning. When they awoke, the brothers found the butterfly had died, and felt as if they had committed a murder. The brothers made a vow that "one day, [they] will make it to heaven, so that [they] can [...] apologize to that Butterfly face-to-face."[2] On every Insane Clown Posse album and EP it reads "Dedicated to the Butterfly" because of this vow.

Mr. Que, Friday, 9 April 2010 16:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the longevity and scale of the Juggalo thing is what really makes it mind-boggling and fascinating

are they really "everywhere" these days? seems like they're at the same fringe level of exposure they've always been. first time I remember coming across them was in some two-page spread comic strip in Spin in the 90s iirc

modern eunuch-like crooning (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:24 (fourteen years ago) link

The answer, Whiney, is because most people actually haven't seen a Juggalo before. Most people just heard about the Disney controversy and tuned in for The Great Milenko which was kind of okayish and The Amazing Jeckel Brothers which was eye-bleedingly terrible, went "lol talent-free fatties" and went back to whatever they had been listening to at the time. Internet forensics and the trend to pour back over things ten to fifteen years old to laugh at them combined with the bizarre longevity (driven largely by the positive message underneath all the nonsense IMO; a shit-ton of CCM folx could learn a valuable lesson here) and the impossible-to-ignore visuals are causing the current Juggalo craze. It's not really rocket science.

Been wondering about this more lately. Are ICP embraced at all by the CCM universe? From my completely removed perspective, the biggest failing of said universe seems to be the relentless candy-coating of everything; for all that ICP's lyrical insanities are no less melodramatic they at least kick against the stereotype, however unfair, of CCM as nothing but lovey-dovey nonsense.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 April 2010 16:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I will honestly say that if ICP is embraced by CCM, I will eat a hat.

xxp: The vulgarity basically takes them directly out of the acceptability zone (and conversely, is exactly what makes them accessible to the disenchanted people they're reaching).

Wood shavings! Laughing out loud! (HI DERE), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

Also big here in the Southeast too. I work at a mall and see a Juggalo or two on average about every other day.

fuckin' rainbows! (latebloomer), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

it was totally the gathering infomercial that kind of got people talking anew. i think for a lot of people ICP is thought of as a weird '90s blip and being reminded that they're not only still around but still command a big following is a crazy wake up call.

my heart will goon (some dude), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:31 (fourteen years ago) link

I only rarely see Juggalos here in MD, but I went to Denver last year and just walking around downtown, it was all like "Juggalo, juggalo, candyraver, juggalo."

will admit that I was into ICP back when the great milenko came out

fuck in rainbows, ☔ (dyao), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:33 (fourteen years ago) link

The most amazing thing about the Juggalo movement IMO is how people point and laugh at it, but whenever you read accounts of people actually spending time with these people they're all along the lines of "holy hell, I have never actually spent time amongst a more upbeat, friendly and helpful group of people in my entire life". Like, ICP is actually making folks into better people through ridiculous clown makeup and terrible music.

Wood shavings! Laughing out loud! (HI DERE), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:34 (fourteen years ago) link

TRUTH BOMB

i think this might be the animus behind the "sudden" emergence of juggaloes on the hipster radar---coastal dwellers have no idea what lurks behind the strip malls of the n woods.

whenever you read accounts of people actually spending time with these people they're all along the lines of "holy hell, I have never actually spent time amongst a more upbeat, friendly and helpful group of people in my entire life".

my last two juggalo interactions were with a young guy with ICP tattoos who was part of duo that was going to fix up my family's cruddy old wurlitzer organ to donate to a church. The other was an elderly bartender wearing an oversized ICP shirt, who seemed nice enough.

da croupier, Friday, 9 April 2010 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link

the juggalo who took our Wurlitzer also got excited when he saw we were throwing out some old air conditioner parts, as he had some "projects" with pals where they might come in handy. I choose to believe they're building some kind of hovercraft like the kind you'd see kits for in the back of Boys' Life.

Violent J, who formed ICP with Shaggy 2 Dope, told HuffPost in a series of texts that he found Wood’s description to be inaccurate.

“I can’t believe TheAtlantic.com would hire a writer, presumably for his expertise in journalism who’s that off the mark, as well as an editor for his or her fact checking abilities who obviously lives within a reality separate from our own when it comes to defining who Juggalos truly are and what they’re about,” he wrote.

Unlike Trump, ICP also showed leadership in the fight against the coronavirus. The group canceled its yearly Gathering of the Juggalos the same month the president was downplaying the virus.

“The bottom line is that we REFUSE to risk even ONE Juggalo life by hosting a Gathering during these troubling times,” ICP tweeted last April.

Daniel Dale, a reporter for CNN, tweeted that covering the 2017 Juggalo protest “was the most pleasant reporting experience I’ve had in Washington. The Juggalos were unfailingly, sometimes comically friendly.”

That description is a far cry from the pro-Trump protest on Jan. 6 that eventually devolved into an insurrection that left five people dead, including a police officer.

In a follow-up text on Tuesday, Violent J said he was hurt to see Wood’s mischaracterization of the Juggalo community.

“The truth is it fuckin’ hurts and [it’s] scary seeing professional adults acting like savage bullies,” he said, noting that ICP fans make “easy targets because they’re so misunderstood.”

He added: “sad little bullshit like this makes me question the media in general and [lose] a little faith in just about [everything] I fuckin read!”
