Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 8 April 2005 16:29 (nineteen years ago) link

both. but the state's decently divided politically.

and complicated. the latino population is huge and have complicated political issues. the nyc/nj transplants tend to be liberal. the beach and city people tend to be liberal. the old southern crowds are obviously not liberal. and then somewhere in there you've got an assload of retired folks that while they can be a smart bunch, they can also be receptive to nostalgia and how things used to be. that can go either way tho.

i mean, 10 years ago, florida had a democratic gov and two dem senators i believe. things just swing around there. i can't imagine that gun law getting passed tho. it smells ripe.

I'm a Floridian ilXor. I live in Tallahassee (probably the most sensible city in the entire state, which says very little), and I know where Jebby lives and works whenever I feel like perceiving him as a threat. Use that tool right back at him to undermine him. Same with that educational proposal to control "leftist totalitarianism" in the universities...it can be used right back at the conservatives.

If anything becomes rampant and expansive (for example this new wave of conservatism) describe it as "mounting like legal briefs in Tallahassee."

It still does.

It's solely the state legislature trying to avoid the real issues. No-one else has been asking for this sort of thing.

I was born in Panama City and I've been a Panhandler all my life. It's not too bad...just a backward unofficial extension of Alabama and Georgia that's not as crazy (save for Vernon, Florida, which Errol Morris made a documentary on in 1981). As I said, Tallahassee's probably the most sensible and progressive city in the state (not that we're making any progress but we don't seem to fall backward like the other major cities in Florida). Sure, we've got a plentiful share of hillbillies that refer to Wal-Mart on the westside as the "Highway 20 Mall" even though it's not even on the aforementioned state route (instead, it's on U.S. Highway 90) but I honestly couldn't imagine living anywhere else in this state. Miami and Tampa seem scarier but I've only visited the latter once and the former not at all. I'd avoid Daytona Beach, Polk County (Lakeland/Winter Haven/Bartow), and everything within 50 miles of Jacksonville save for the Riverside area and St. Augustine at all costs. Panama City's a complete dead zone, too. I shudder to think of how I'd have turned out had I stayed there.

Ian Riese-Moraine. To Hell with you and your gradual evolution! (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 9 April 2005 21:24 (nineteen years ago) link

I lived in Tampa and St. Petersburg in the 90s, and found both cities to be quite comfortable. Tampa at the time was pretty progressive, particularly Ybor City, before it became the drinking mall/t-shirt shop that it is today. There were bands a plenty, a few pretty wonderful record stores and art galleries, and the micro radio station 87X, some of whose participants would move to New York and become free103. Also along the radio lines, it was and still is home to what I consider the very finest community radio station -- outside of WBAI -- on the east cost, WMNF. The St. Petersburg Times, the area's largest-circulation newspaper, is probably the best newspaper of its size anywhere. The Tampa Theater was a great place to see a movie. In short, it was/is like many medium-sized cities in the U.S. It wasn't without it share of bizarre news stories and reactionary politics, but not any more so than anywhere else. Rent was cheap, the surroundings were beautiful (I've never been to a nicer beach than the one at Ft. DeSoto state park, for example, and Tampa's Hyde Park neighborhood is a gem), and unlike much of the state the demographics skew pretty young. There were few better places to be young and broke in the 90s.

Also, FWIW, the primary engine of politics in Florida isn't culture, it's taxes, particularly the homestead exemption. The homebuilders who dominate the state's economy have an obvious interest in keeping property taxes low (there is no state income tax in Florida), the elderly population who live off interest income and pensions have a clear interest in keeping their own property and use taxes low, and the megarich who crowd the state's southern coastline have an obvious interest in protecting their assets from bankruptcy and other legal pitfalls. The elderly and retired are the most active voting bloc, and the real estate and development industries spread the most money around. The big political players aren't evangelicals and culture warriors -- they're the AARP, the Mortgage Bankers Association, the National Association of Home Builders, and slippery R/E magnates like Al Hoffman, Armando Codina (a Cuban developer who gave a young Jeb his first job in the state) and Mel Sembler (who chaired Dubya's state campaign in 2000 and is now ambassador to Italy). The Assemblies of God and other born-again ministries are basically chew-toys for the moneyed interests in the state.

i grew up on the coast between jacksonville and daytona beach. you can do worse that a slow pace sleepy beach town, yet i sort of understand on some levels.

gainesville is also a good town. very comparable to tallahassee, but without the state politics. (but the same annoying amount of college football insanity.)

florida's a love/hate for me. i miss it, but i'm not sure i'd go back and multiple parts of the state bring that out in me. east coast south florida. tampa/st pete/sarasota/ftmyers. gville. jacksonville to daytona. etc.

i was gonna say that everything that i've ever seen or read about jacksonville makes the place seem to be the worst -- the worst example of White People Jesusland gone amuck this side of colorado springs or branson MO.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 11 April 2005 04:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Jacksonville is probably the worst-planned city in the state, which is saying something in Florida, where many "cities" are built as unincorporated housing developments that only later flower into municipalities because of the incredible strain they place on existing county and state services (like schools, water systems, road maintenance, etc.). It grew rapidly starting in the early 1980s thanks to Reagan-era high military spending and the concurrent collapse of the housing market in the Northeast.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Monday, 11 April 2005 10:42 (nineteen years ago) link

you said it about the planned housing stuff. the town i grew up in had mile after mile of paved road with no houses. gradually it filled up and is beyond control to some degree. we had fun parties in secluded culdesacs.

i wouldn't say jacksonville is the worst. if you're looking for gun toting intolerant christianity, you can do much worse than jacksonville. it's just a visible town in one of the largest states in the country.

most southerners agree: florida ain't the south. it's the thing dangling below the bible belt.

Unconstitutional Stops on Florida Highways

(CN) - A federal class action claims Florida and a private contractor detain drivers on the Florida Turnpike if they pay a toll with a $50 or $100 bill, and won't let them go until they cough up personal information. The class claims the detentions are dangerous and unconstitutional, and that sometimes drivers and passengers are detained and interrogated for paying tolls with bills as small as $5.

The class action in Tampa also names collections company Faneuil as a defendant. Florida hired Faneuil to provide toll collectors and supervisors on its toll roads.

Lead plaintiff Joel Chandler claims the state and Faneuil violate the Constitution by authorizing toll collectors, at their discretion, to imprison motorists and their passengers and hold them until they divulge personal information, some of which is written up on "Bill Detection Reports."

According to the complaint, Milissa Burger, deputy director of toll operations, for Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE), "directed implementation of bill detection procedures, the related unlawful detentions of motorists and passengers, and the use of Bill Detection Reports, including writing and receiving emails regarding those efforts. She informed recipients of such email correspondence specifically not to copy the legal department on their response to her emails."

The class claims Florida and Faneuil have done the illegal stops for 4 years: "For approximately four years, FDOT and Faneuil have engaged in a practice of detaining motorists and their passengers on the Turnpike System until such motorists provided certain personal information in exchange for their release."

The class calls it an unconstitutional search and seizure, and says Florida and Faneuil knew it was unconstitutional

"Defendants had actual, constructive or imputed knowledge of the FDOT policy, practice or custom whereby motorists and their passengers were unlawfully detained on the Turnpike System and forced to provide personal information in exchange for their release," the complaint states.

"The personal information recorded by toll collectors includes, but is not limited to the vehicle make, model, color, tag number and state of issuance. Other information such as the vehicle occupants' race, gender, and relative age has also been recorded." The class adds: "Toll collectors have required motorists to provide additional personal information, including drivers license information in exchange for their release."

Toll collectors trapped motorists at toll booths by holding the barrier down, even though the drivers had enough money to pay the toll.

"Plaintiffs knew they were not free to leave the toll plaza. Going forward was controlled and blocked by toll operators and supervisors, going backward was illegal as well as blocked by other vehicles, all other directions were blocked, leaving the vehicle was unsafe, and would have meant abandoning valuable property."

The toll collectors threatened to call police if drivers or passengers resisted the "bill detection procedures" and the demands for personal information.

The complaint adds: "The policy of detaining motorists without their consent and without legal justification extended throughout the Turnpike System and was so permanent and well settled that it constituted custom, practice or policy which has the force of law and rises to the level of deliberate indifference to plaintiff's and class members' constitutional rights."

An associate medical examiner testified Thursday in the murder trial of a South Florida man accused of killing his girlfriend that he’s never before seen an example of someone choking to death from oral sex. But that’s what defense attorney Ken Padowitz intends to present to the jury in the murder trial of Richard Patterson. Patterson, 65, of Margate, is charged with second-degree murder in the choking death of his girlfriend, Francisca Marquinez, 60, in 2015.

Iouri Boiko, Broward County’s associate medical examiner, testified for the prosecution that a penis would have to be lodged far enough down a person’s throat to prevent someone from breathing. Boiko said it would take two to three minutes for someone to die that way, so a sign of struggle would be obvious. “If she cannot breathe, she usually start to kicking, biting or to do something to prevent this blocking of the airway, try to open this airway,” Boiko testified. “It’s (a) normal reaction of any person.”

The exercise is put on each year as a part of the Special Forces Industry Conference, a 12,000-strong, three-day meeting of Special Operations personnel and companies showcasing the latest technologies available to both U.S. troops and their international allies.

Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is captured by pirates and held ashore near the convention center here. Soon after, as thousands of spectators watched from nearby rooftops, party boats and bar patios, Black Hawk helicopters supported by smaller gunships and fast-moving riverine craft descended on the area.
