I can see this being the type of thing where Apple doesn't release anything until they think they have the problem nailed (see copy paste.) It seems like Jobs is in love with the idea of re-imagining computing, so I don't see a tactical retreat to a boring old filesystem.

And if I had to guess, I'd say the future looks like iTunes/iPhoto for documents, with similar but distinct management interfaces for office docs, music, etc.

idm@hyperreal.org (lukas), Thursday, 15 April 2010 19:44 (fourteen years ago) link

i suspect they're desperately trying to come up with something better than the google app style filecloud, though that's easily the best solution available right now for mucking about stuff on multiple computer or portable devices that all have internet access

Nhex, Thursday, 15 April 2010 19:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Nice idea in that article though - about going from Quicklook to Quickedit, this would actually be a brilliant move, no UI just working keyboard shortcuts to manipulate documents, autosave constantly etc. I already use Spotlight all the time. There are already a hardcore set of users who are using Quicksilver-esque task launchers...

Nhex, Thursday, 15 April 2010 19:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I use gmail and google docs...miles better than mobileMe, obviously, but I really hate them. I hate the interface on google's stuff, I hate how buttons keep moving around. I hate a lot of things about them. It's bizarre that there are these two opposing companies competing against each other and their strengths are so totally opposite. If apple got on board and realized everybody wanted a greater degree of cloud computing and offered powerful features, instead of the stunted website that is mobileme mail, they could do amazing things. Or if Google just hired some better UI people.

I know apple is working on this and that, but I'm affraid it's too late...maybe not for the industry but for me! I've already moved all my mail and contacts to google. I also moved some timesheet type files I use when freelancing from iDisk to google docs.

Yeah I wonder if all that money Apple recently dropped on a datacenter was for this or just to keep up with iTunes/App Store growth.

my Verizon contract is about up and i'm considering jumping over to AT&T for the iPhone. sounds like the 4G is coming out this summer though. if i got the 3GS now, would i be able to trade it in toward a 4G when that comes out? just wondering if i should wait or if it doesn't really matter.

circa1916, Friday, 16 April 2010 23:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd wait. You'd probably be able to get some discount on the 4G (no way for a free trade, though), but why not just wait a few more months?

Nhex, Friday, 16 April 2010 23:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm gonna wait a few months to see if there's any solid news about iPhone coming to Verizon...if not it's the HTC Incredible for me. I've just heard enough complaints from users in NY, but more importantly all the people I call are on verizon, which helps keep costs down.

dan selzer, Friday, 16 April 2010 23:21 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, waiting seems to be the smart thing to do. my current phone is a total POS and slightly broken so i'm just very eager to get rid of it.

circa1916, Friday, 16 April 2010 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

cozen, that picture looks a lot more like the iPad form factor than an iPhone. iPhone is much more tapered on the edges.

mh, Friday, 16 April 2010 23:45 (fourteen years ago) link

After the ridiculous run-around and bs that I got from AT&T last summer, I'm going to say not a chance in hell.

joygoat, Saturday, 17 April 2010 02:42 (fourteen years ago) link

i would wait, both for verizon and 4g (although 3gs is pretty fast). hopefully if they open up verizon it will lessen the load on AT&T, and also maybe drive the price on AT&T down a bit (it is outrageous, IMO).

akm, Saturday, 17 April 2010 07:45 (fourteen years ago) link

Maybe it will force AT&T to allow tethering finally, ffs

Been liking some of Gruber's coverage as of late, put him back on my RSS list, but man his whole "OMG GIZMODO HOW COULD YOU PAY FOR STOLEN GOODS" outrage is a bit ridiculous. I mean, I almost take it for granted he's an Apple shill but dude try to look the part a little less.

Nhex, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 06:11 (fourteen years ago) link

can you pass RSS through a smug filter?

etrian odysseus (cozen), Tuesday, 20 April 2010 07:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I see your Gruber and raise you one Ihnatko: http://ihnatko.com/2010/04/19/the-increasingly-plausible-miraculous-engadget-and-gizmodo-iphone-4g/

jesus who cares. apple ppl are ridiculous

po-mo da don (tpp), Tuesday, 20 April 2010 08:34 (fourteen years ago) link

what a long-winded bullshit excuse for stealing a phone.

'i sat around and waited for the guy but he didn't come back'

yes and afterwards you just walked off with it..didnt think to hand it in behind the bar?

sounds pretty lol coverup to me. details are suspiciously fleshed out. but who cares

gizmodo paid $5k for it

h/t to max

caek, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 15:35 (fourteen years ago) link

gizmodo was noticeably sluggish yesterday, and, i think, they turned comments off to cut down on processing.

slow golf clap to apple's black-ops PR department

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 18:10 (fourteen years ago) link

This doesn't smell like Apple's PR, black ops or otherwise. I like how everyone is shitting themselves over a prototype that features a likely not-final case, and there are no pictures of the thing actually running. Apple's not going to freak because this is a huge leak from them, but for any other company this is about 1/1000th of what would be shown to the press throughout a product's development.

mh, Tuesday, 20 April 2010 21:54 (fourteen years ago) link

BTW, the new inertial trackpad thing on MacBook Pros is nice. I can get to the bottom of ILX threads so quickly!

Gruber has a great post up abt the whole Gizmodo/iPhone 4 debacle

ksh, Thursday, 22 April 2010 20:56 (fourteen years ago) link

gruber's tone has gotten really irritating over the years.

caek, Thursday, 22 April 2010 20:57 (fourteen years ago) link

man, i love Daring Fireball

ksh, Thursday, 22 April 2010 20:58 (fourteen years ago) link

i like daring fireball and i'm a bit of an apple stan but gruber's broken his brain over this gizmodo thing.

joe, Thursday, 22 April 2010 20:59 (fourteen years ago) link

been reading since aught four, and i'm sure he didn't used to bang on about this old school journalism shit like he invented it back then. want him to go back to getting neurotic about the finder.

caek, Thursday, 22 April 2010 20:59 (fourteen years ago) link

suspect he's playing to the gallery of his apple contacts to ensure continued tips. that's as much old school journalism as gizmodo's shady dealings.

joe, Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:03 (fourteen years ago) link

not me (no iphone), but I saw it linked from sanctimoniousfireball.com

Steve Sharta (cozen), Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:04 (fourteen years ago) link

wtf @ the lufthansa thing. that doesn't even... make any sense. got to ride that publicity wave I guess

Steve Sharta (cozen), Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:05 (fourteen years ago) link

on matters of taste, he has reliably terrible conservative yuppie ones. wouldn't bother me so much if he wasn't seen as a technical design guru with a typography background. he's a perl coder (taste!) with a copy of strunk and white and a stanley kubrick box set.

caek, Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link

what do you mean?

ksh, Thursday, 22 April 2010 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Did you guys ever see where people were calling him out on his complete inability to maintain his Markdown plugin? The main version had "unpublished" fixes that he stuck elsewhere, there's no community management of it despite the syntax being in a lot of places, etc.
