^True.
Probably my favorite SNL impression is Armisen as David Paterson (although that's starting to wear thin), and it bears very little resemblance to the actual dude, i.e. he doesn't talk like that, he doesn't have a vendetta against NEW JERSEY. It's basically a character named "David Paterson," loosely based on the real-life person.

it's all taste, but the only time i have beef is when i think they failed to capture what makes them funny, like his pacino, which sounds more like jackie gleason in smokey and the bandit.
― da croupier, Wednesday, 21 April 2010 14:50 (fourteen years ago) link
his impressions just seem really canned to me -- vocally he ain't bad, but the mannerisms in the branson & carville (esp the carville) are really stilted and awkward
the game show sketches are almost always lame (and 8 mins long), but "i got it" or w/e was pretty decent (a really good idea but kind of limited in lols by nature)
― z-rogatis (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 14:57 (fourteen years ago) link
game show sketches have been a lazy SNL formula for decades, but i'm ok with ones like that and the Burn Notice sketch that just take take the concept to an absurd place.

i guess any game show that isn't hinged on 8 mins of kristen wiig making faces is a win in some regard
― z-rogatis (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 April 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah the fact that they've done the 'secret word' sketch more than once just as a vehicle for her stupid actress character is despicable imo

i can never hate her because she's still great in lower key and duo sketches (love that improv musical duo with fred armisen) but any "people stare blankly while kristen spazzes" bit is straight up mary gallagher hell.

― surmudgeon (some dude), Sunday, 25 April 2010 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link
I think most people aren't as into the new album. That said, I liked the Brian Eno performance. (Didn't like the first performance tho.)
― Mordy, Sunday, 25 April 2010 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link
I liked both performances. I like the new album, but I haven't listened to it enough yet. I really loved the first one. The big trendy hits and the weird psyche stuff. I don't know if people are supposed to like them, they were hyped because 3 of the songs from the first album(and e.p.) were really catchy and merged a bunch of different trends and there's all this invented controversy about the new album not having such obvious hits, so yeah, it's funny that they're playing this stuff on SNL, and relatively mainstream radio (Matt Pinfield...), but I doubt this album will be the party jam of the summer.
― dan selzer, Monday, 26 April 2010 03:37 (fourteen years ago) link
controversy isn't really invented so much as a straight-up - this album is a disappointment - i think. "Brian Eno" is catchy though
― Nhex, Monday, 26 April 2010 03:51 (fourteen years ago) link
I don't know, I think Flash Delirium is great. It's just not the anthem the past hits were. I'm not totally sold by their whole "we're really into obscure 80 psyche bands" or whatever because I think most of the first album isn't much different and it's something I like. I liked it when Jennifer Gentle did it (similarly acid-drenched syd-damaged post-indie rock neo-psych or whatever) and I like it here.
― dan selzer, Monday, 26 April 2010 04:04 (fourteen years ago) link
That was the only part of the episode I liked.
