I don't get this one either... It's titled "Les Douleurs de la Mort", what's "douleurs"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:02 (seventeen years ago) link

the pains of death

gbx (skowly), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, but I still don't get it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Death took the woman's pram with the intention of killing the baby by pushing it down the hill, but the baby survived (and is happy maybe?) so Death suffers a terrible sense of ennui/worthlessness.

that is awesome.

baby pwns death.

ath (ath), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't really understand that one either. Lovely art though

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:30 (seventeen years ago) link

Okay, I don't think that it's a particularly good one. Like the toy train one above, the joke is a bit too obvious for PBF. I guess it's the execution that's supposed to make it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I think the baby is clapping after the fun ride downhill, so Death's plans are not just thwarted but actively subverted. Makes it about 5% funnier.

ledge (ledge), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks for pointing that out, I like it now!

chap who would dare to welcome our new stingray masters (chap), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Also "Les Douleurs De La Mort" as a sitcom about Death fucking up all the time.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:36 (seventeen years ago) link

i used to not find the comic strip very funny, maybe somewhere between 3-5% funny, which is to say not very funny at all, but then someone explained to me the reasons why the comic strip was in fact funny, and it was then that my perceived humor levels regarding this particular comic strip rose to approximately 40-45%, which is actually quite funny! i came close to laughing soon after this revelation, but alas, did not.

ath (ath), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

It's also kind of an Edward Gorey parody strip, ya?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 20 November 2006 18:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I love PBF but this week's strip ("Post Apocalyptic") continues the great art/not-quite-hilarious direction.

Leee, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:22 (sixteen years ago) link

that one's good but i kinda feel like it's too similiar to "No Survivors" (xpost)

THE BUNNY WANTS TO PERFORM CUNNILINGUS AND CUNNINGLY ENCRYPTS HIS DESIRE INTO MUSINGS ABOUT CLOUDS

WHAT IS THERE TO UNDERSTAND

elmo argonaut, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:23 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't understand not understanding that one!

HI DERE, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh, Will, I think the gag is that the dad doesn't appreciate the idea of a "Things I Hate" box, and ironically gives the kid a bare-bottomed what-for.

xxpost why would a bunny want to, and why would the girl turn the offer down??

Leee, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess that's the best explanation. I still feel like it's missing something.

Will M., Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:26 (sixteen years ago) link

why would a bunny want to, and why would the girl turn the offer down??

1) because he cares about her pleasure
2) because it's an inopportune time of the month

ok srsly you've never heard couple banter before?

HI DERE, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:28 (sixteen years ago) link

or she already got mad laid and is incapable of multiple O's, so she can't handle people touching her for at least the next 35 mins

Will M., Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:28 (sixteen years ago) link

hi dere otm, it is basically gross couple banter, only with a bunny which makes it funny (if it were just a dude it wouldn't be a PBF comic)

Wait what.

Leee, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

i think the point is to take an easily legible cartoon kidsy relationship, a girl and her talking bunny, and imply this whole adult-realness backstory where the bunny really just wanted to get in her pants all along, and used that afternoon watching clouds to make his move. and she shoots him down, but gives him a hug. sad!

xp oh i hadn't considered that they were already doin it

gff, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:33 (sixteen years ago) link

that is so gross

gff, Tuesday, 23 October 2007 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

The thing with the spanking comic is the inverted punchline schtick; it's not the content but the structure, kind of like this softer world piece:

http://www.asofterworld.com/clean/kitchen.jpg

The humor of the PBF strip, if you think there is any, lies in the gap between the third and fourth panels. You have to imagine the slow burn of the adult as he gradually gets the audacity and impudence of the child's gesture, and then he loses it altogether. The irony of the kid getting spanked for not liking spankings is secondary and tacked-on.

Did anyone ever bring up Softer World in the worst comic thread? That comic consistently makes me sneer. To the point where if people in real life are like "Do you read A Softer World?" I have to keep myself from repeating it back to them in a high-pitched retard voice.
