I just bought a boring incase neoprene one, didn't see some of these fancier ones, though I don't know if I'd want them...though a little pocket for power would've been nice.

i'm going to keep the computer in a bigger bag most of the time i'm out, i just want something nice to keep it in and then to put between it and some cruddy table.

lol

Please educate yourself. UK prices must by law include VAT, which is around 18%. US prices do not include tax.

amateurist you don't need serious graphics card horsepower to edit/watch video. only if you're rendering graphics and doing tons of 3d and transitions and stuff.

thanks! i might get the middle-of-the-road 15" model, then, and use the $150 difference on some software.

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 00:58 (fourteen years ago) link

i mean there is a small difference in the processor speed, 2.53 versus 2.66. will i really notice that though?

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 00:59 (fourteen years ago) link

no...you will notice more of a difference switching between the various architectures I think? anyway you don't want to play starcraft 2 with all of us ? :(

Did you in fact lift my luggage (dyao), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 01:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't even know what starcraft 2 is

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 01:01 (fourteen years ago) link

"switching between architectures"

what does this mean?

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 01:01 (fourteen years ago) link

walkin from the house to the gazebo

difference between i5 and i7, i7's are supposed to be on some giant killing shit.

my philosophy has always been to buy the best available @ the time, as you'll be using the thing for 4-5 years and you want to futureproof yourself as much as possible. unless you're the kind of guy who likes to upgrade all the time

Did you in fact lift my luggage (dyao), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 01:05 (fourteen years ago) link

congratulations to the tories

The Clegg Effect (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 01:21 (fourteen years ago) link

xp especially with macs - the only thing you can generally upgrade is the RAM (often cheaper from other stores) and sometimes the internal HD, otherwise you WILL be stuck with whatever you have

Nhex, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:23 (fourteen years ago) link

true, but I've never noticed a huge difference in processor speed, not enough to be worth the price. If you can afford it, great, but if you're looking to save money, getting the slightly slower processor but maxing out the ram/getting an SSD, will make more of a difference.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:52 (fourteen years ago) link

that is true - looking at the benchmarks it looks like the i7s have about a 10% edge over the i5s, but even the i5 is leaps and bounds over the last generation.

http://www.macnn.com/articles/10/04/15/core.i5.more.than.sufficient/

Did you in fact lift my luggage (dyao), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 04:11 (fourteen years ago) link

however I still think the i7 option is worth it for the doubling of graphics card memory - iirc one of the moves apple is making for future revisions of the OS is to dump more processing onto the GPU.

Did you in fact lift my luggage (dyao), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 04:14 (fourteen years ago) link

you bastards are confusing me.

by another name (amateurist), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 06:01 (fourteen years ago) link

get an ipad.

sir gaga (s1ocki), Wednesday, 12 May 2010 06:09 (fourteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

What we appear to be looking at is a brand new input device that Apple has dreamed up which connects to desktops (and laptops, if you like) via Bluetooth, much like the Apple Keyboard. If you take what you see in the photos at face value, it would seem that the folks in Cupertino are making a play for finger-based input in a big way -- taking the work they've done on Mac laptops and the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, and translating it to the desktop realm.

huge difference between just a big-ass trackpad and a screen you can touch imo.

Magic trackpad would be a winner in my book. Even with my magic mouse I am always reaching for the trackpad to zoom things, exposé etc.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 7 June 2010 12:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I can see it being useful -- I use a docked laptop at work w/mouse and still use trackpad for scrolling, but if they make OS X go all "touch" I'll be miffed.

stet, Monday, 7 June 2010 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

They'll announce the new iPhone today. Prob be available next week? I'm going to have to skip this one though and wait till 2011.

Jeff, Monday, 7 June 2010 12:26 (thirteen years ago) link

I just want the iPhone os upgrade.

Jeff, Monday, 7 June 2010 12:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Lappy is on a riser to make the screen level with the big one and so I'm down for putting money on that straight away.

new phone time and my blackberry has not ceased to annoy me in the last 6 months so it looks like iPhone for me.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Monday, 7 June 2010 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link

MobileMe for free is a big one for me, I hope that's true. Paid for it before and liked it, especially the seamless, over-the-air syncing. But I figured £60 was a bit much for that, given that thanks to gmail and dropbox I wasn't using the mail account or iDisk.

I agree w/stet - they really could do w/divesting some functionality from itunes to try improve performance

I want a version of itunes that is ONLY an MP3 player

ლ(-_-ლ) (cozen), Monday, 7 June 2010 16:17 (thirteen years ago) link

The iPhone model is better: separate MP3 player, app store and iTunes store. Bundling them all together into one app is stupid enough, but then making that app also the only way of getting stuff into and out of iPhone/iPad is just ludicrous.

(Doesn't help that it's a beachbally heap of ancient code, either. Think it's the oldest app Apple is still shipping.)

The whole idea of the digital hub is fucked now anyway: having to be tethered to one particular PC made sense in 2001, but is daft now. Music and info shld be in the cloud. Spotify-like
