Hey, watched census sketch on Hulu -- funny!

i thought that sketch seemed old school

yes, IT WAS FUNNY

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Monday, 10 May 2010 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link

it also wasn't the Golden Girls 'shock' of dirty old broad ad nauseum

Hate to agree with Morbs on anything comedic, but that really was the funniest sketch of the lot. Really well written.

And I normally like vagina jokes.

i agree as well, also like the debbie downer and bronx beat on hulu.

Here's a good Betty White scene:

it seemed old school because it's a rip off of this old & much funnier sketch with christopher walken

For a guy who spent many years of his movie career playing a creep, Walken seems to make anything really hilarious when he tackles comedy.

The premise is ripped off, but the jokes and chemistry are totally diff.

the Walken thing is a very mildly amusing 'weird' sketch that I imagine has great appeal for bong holders.

Using the same premise is not "a ripoff."

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Monday, 10 May 2010 02:16 (thirteen years ago) link

It's more of an homage. The Walken sketch is way funnier, though. I mean, Walken. I love that sketch. "Boy, I really overshot it with that 80, didn't I?"

also, honestly didn't know Anglo comedians were still doing minstrel Latino shit. Someone tell Jerry Lewis to take his 'Asian' buck teeth out of mothballs.

i cringe at least twice every episode at Armisen in various accents/skin colors, but i dunno is Sacha Baron Cohen fans can really claim to take the high road

Yes. Only one where I actually laughed, not just chuckled.

jaymc, Monday, 10 May 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I laughed pretty hard at Maya Rudolph's Whitney Houston impersonation, especially the gravel voice when she tried to sing.

it means "EMOTIONAL"! (HI DERE), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:38 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i'd never seen that before, only wish she "sang" even more. It was a night of broad humor even for SNL (no pun intended!) but Betty White was great - shouldn't be as rare as it is that they have a host who can read cue cards without losing their timing. Also found it kinda lol there were so many female roles but the non-Wiig actresses currently on cast barely appeared - hopefully they were taking notes backstage.

da croupier, Monday, 10 May 2010 13:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, the voice was lolarious/accurate. xp

"Armisen grew up in Long Island, New York. His mother is of Venezuelan descent and his father is of German and Japanese ancestry.[1]"

"Maya Rudolph was born in Gainesville, Florida, the daughter of soul singer Minnie Riperton and composer, songwriter and producer Richard Rudolph.[1] Her father is Jewish and her mother African American.[2]"

I guess for copraphiles this is gonna be awesome (Pancakes Hackman), Monday, 10 May 2010 13:51 (thirteen years ago) link

winced at the latino minstrelsy, but otherwise thought this was a pretty good time! i've not watched snl with any regularity in prob a decade, but this seemed fairly strong from start to finish.

It's relevant to whether she's "Anglo," which she isn't, and I don't have time to do all your homework unless you're gonna pony up some cash.

I won't be returning to Cleveland.

Cleveland will shortly be banned from ever participating in anything baseball-related if this crap keeps up, so no worries.

Especially since Tina wrote the original Walken sketch, in between bong hits.

I was wondering if she'd written the original. Close enough to it I'd be surprised if they randomly busted out another without any connection.

How many sketches has SNL done in 35 years about ppl behaving badly at parties? 50-75?

At least they're a nice break from talk shows and game shows.

I seriously want Abe Vigoda to host next.

while they were at it, they could book Abe Vigoda as the musical guest, and have the most compelling/confusing promos ever
