I uploaded the MGM sides to a Beach Boys-related message board a couple of years ago and was told by Parks' webmaster to take 'em down immediately. For some reason he seems to be terribly ashamed of the two MGM 45s, recordings which I think are his best work. Briefly: Number Nine is "Ode To Joy" from Beethoven's 9th in a pop/baroque setting, its b-side "Do What You Wanta" is a motown-esque stomper (no, it really is!!) and is truly awesome. Come To The Sunshine is the number covered by Harpers Bizarre; it's always felt a little too overcooked to me; too showy. "Farther Along" is more gentle and easy to like, and bears the writing credit "Hopi Indians" (is it a traditional folk tune?).
As for the non-LP singles on Warners, "Donovan's Colours" is simply a mono remix of the "Song Cycle" album track, while the b-side is a re-edit. "The Eagle & Me" and its flip "On The Rolling Sea When Jesus Speaks To Me" are both -I think- traditional tunes (certainly neither are Parks compositions). Musically speaking, they join the dots nicely between Song Cycle and Discover America; widescreen yet homespun.
Perhaps I'll take the bull by the horns & risk suffering the wrath of www.vandykeparks.com again by uploading/YSI-ing these somewhere.
