i've heard "ey-guh" and "ee-gee"...and bamyasi as "bam-ya-si" and "bam-ya-shi." in any case, it is a fun name to pronounce.

eggay bam-yah-see!

Mark: did your friend tell you what it meant?

Now how about Tago Mago. Nasal a or opening mouth for the dentist a?

Opening mouth for dentist A!

I've alway said "Taygo Maygo" and "egay". But that's because that's how I heard it first.

Dr. T (dr. t), Friday, 1 July 2005 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

To me they were always "tah-go mah-go" and "ee-gee bomb-yah-see."

But I have no idea if those were right.

(Or maybe ege = iggy?)

by the way, is Soon Over Babaluma as boring as it seemed when I played it twice this morning? (Unlimited Edition seemed more fun.)

xhuxk, Friday, 1 July 2005 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I never got into it so much. Haven't heard it in years, though.

Soon Over is great. IMO not any more or less boring than Brian Eno or Kompakt.

somehow this thread has left me craving figgy pudding.

matlewis, Friday, 1 July 2005 16:47 (eighteen years ago) link

and i'm not even entirely sure what that is

matlewis, Friday, 1 July 2005 16:48 (eighteen years ago) link

there was a Scottish guy who made records under the name Ege Bam Yasi in the late 80s (sorta proto acidhouse), and he pronounced it "eggy" so thats how i've always known it (this being long before i'd even heard of Can).
"Soon.." isn't that great but i love "quantum physics", its like someones come along with a giant music eraser & rubbed most of the track out, just leaving a faint outline left.

I don't consider Soon Over Babaluma boring compared to some later Can, but Landed is far less boring. If you were to remove both versions of "I Want More" from Flow Motion, Soon Over Babaluma would sound like a carnival ride in comparison.. and this kinda goes for Saw Delight, Out Of Reach, Can, and Rite Time as well.

Now, I just want reissues of Can Delay 1968 and Cannibalism 2, and I'll be happy.

And Unlimited Edition is great if only for the Mooney outtake tracks that could have been great album tracks.. or even singles.. "The Empress and the Ukraine King" and "Connection" being the best examples of the latter.

"Mother Upduff" invented King Missile, btw.

I've always said "eh-guh bam-ya-see" and never considered this might be wrong.

Buy Future Days.

Steev (Steev), Friday, 1 July 2005 17:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I've always said it like it's egé (eh-gay). But it appears that I'm wrong!

No. There is one boring track on it, but then there's one boring track on every Can album (except "Monster Movie")

Tago Mago is named after an island in the Balearics which is pronounced tah-go mah-go

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 4 July 2005 10:42 (eighteen years ago) link

That's one of the stories they give, the other is that it's the name of a magician. I always thought it was just a rip-off of "Ummagumma" (see also "Hallogallo" by Neu!)

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 4 July 2005 10:43 (eighteen years ago) link

Doesn't Tago Mago the place have some connection with Aleister Crowley? Hence the magician reference.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Monday, 4 July 2005 10:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah! Could be!

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 4 July 2005 10:51 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm a bit shocked at how good these remasters sound compared to the original cds. wow

And Future Days. I've listened to it about 50 times--haven't been bored for a second.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 05:13 (eighteen years ago) link

... wish I could say the same

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 10:02 (eighteen years ago) link

I dug up my LP of "Tago Mago" yesterday. The one with the live shot and the 'envelope' opening at the back.

sigh.
