"20 Feet Tall" is such an inspiring song imo.

Anytime I have obstacles in front of me now, I got to be like "Rev, you are 20 feet tall. Step over that shit!"

fuck being hard, suburbs are complicated (The Reverend), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 14:09 (thirteen years ago) link

You're 20 feet tall? O_O

"20 Ft Tall" and Damian Marley/Nas's "Strong Will Continue" are my big inspirational songs this year.

Mordy, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 15:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i love "20 feet tall" but "jump up in the air" is my go-get-em inspirational-motivational erykah track of choice this year.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

haha me too. i made myself an inspiraysh mix and put jump up in the air on it.

benji b played this at sónar and i was like "omfg i did not know there was a house remix of 20ft tall!!!!!" and when i got back yesterday one of the first things i did was go a-hunting for it:

The Reverend, Saturday, 3 July 2010 08:40 (thirteen years ago) link

apparently they let her do 5-10 songs in a row then she bounced

The Reverend, Saturday, 3 July 2010 08:49 (thirteen years ago) link

what's up with portland man

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 3 July 2010 08:51 (thirteen years ago) link

first random chappelle stand up now random badu karaoke

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 3 July 2010 08:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think the chappelle standup actually happened?? I seem to recall that it was dismissed as a rumor that got out of hand.

The Reverend, Saturday, 3 July 2010 08:53 (thirteen years ago) link

oh

one month passes...

hrrm did "jump up in the air (stay there)" ever emerge in 320 kbps? or, like, better than the 160 i have

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 09:57 (thirteen years ago) link

"gone baby, don't be long" is the one of this album, aside from "window seat"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:16 (thirteen years ago) link

also this album sounds perfect -- sunday morning!!

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:16 (thirteen years ago) link

this album is nice to listen to (yeah jordan sunday morning seems like the perfect time) but it just feels so damn inconsequential to me; every song feels like an interlude. they're nice interludes, but i think i was wanting something more in the pt. 1 vein

k3vin k., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:20 (thirteen years ago) link

i think if you make something as epic as pt. 1, the best direction is to go in the one she went in

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:22 (thirteen years ago) link

A very good album, and you named the two best songs (I'd include "Umm Hmm," which became essential summer listening)

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:28 (thirteen years ago) link

it's really a beautiful thing

J0rdan S., Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes. Really have started coming around on how this piece complements the first one.

Plus, I've been listening to it at least once a week, now, for what ... six months?

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link

I do realize I've probably given "Gone Baby" a pass because I've waited years for someone to realize how Wings' "Arrow Through Me" was ripe for sampling.

Gucci Mane hermeneuticist (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

The groove is soooo deep.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:34 (thirteen years ago) link

According to iTunes:

Most played: "Love"
Least played: "Incense"

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I just tried something: dropping "Gone Baby" after Van Helden's "U Don't Know Me."

i do love this album but i'm not sure it's top ten material for me

this isn't STRAWBERRY 0_o it's RAWBERRY (forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 August 2010 05:27 (thirteen years ago) link

naw, it ain't

d4n, d4n, d4n (yaosah, yaosah, yaosah) (The Reverend), Monday, 23 August 2010 05:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, not top 10 of all time, no. The first one was; not this one.

2 + 2 is vah-gi-nah (Eric H.), Monday, 23 August 2010 06:01 (thirteen years ago) link

er, i meant top ten of the year.

this isn't STRAWBERRY 0_o it's RAWBERRY (forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 August 2010 06:39 (thirteen years ago) link

album works best if you treat it as mostly throwaway leftover/fun/not totally finished sessions from the last album. ie inconsequential as someone said upthread. this is prob the most unessential album shes released.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i've come back to it a lot this year. "out my mind, just in time" is one of the best things she's ever done.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:39 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah thats a great one, but about 75%-85% of it just doesnt reward all the times ive returned to it. theres not enough there. even out my mind, just in time sounds kind of like a half hearted return to green eyes territory. i mean, its still good, but not as good as GE. its the type of album thats too easy for her.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't think i'd use the word half-hearted to describe any of this album, the hooks may meander or drift at times but there's a lot of feeling in it.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:45 (thirteen years ago) link

i think its being given more credit than is perhaps deserved because of who made it. or maybe i should replace half hearted with 'knackered'. she just sounds like her mind is somewhere else. which isnt in itself a particularly bad quality to have as a vocalist. cos yeah, there is feeling in it but theres not much craft. its just an album of sketches. reminds me a lot of princes from the vault album that he gave in to close his warners deal.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:49 (thirteen years ago) link

this is prob the most unessential album shes released.
