i can't think of anything more economical than gucci metaphorically turning himself into a fully functioning vehicle -- also love the callback to "lemonade" with that new yellow riff
also on the second half of the first verse on "it's alive", between clowning ugly chicks & cracking jokes about medusa & toni braxton/michael jackson, it's kinda like gucci as kanye!

When I heard the esteemed philosopher Soulja Boy reiterate his view of "Gucci bandana," I had a gut feeling that a Gucci-Santana collaboration was inevitable.
I'm glad that gut feeling appears to have been wrong.

two bananas new tracks, one by swizz and one by bangladesh. so satisfying to hear him just eating up these different types of beats.
― Jacques_Lamure, Sunday, 13 June 2010 16:58 (thirteen years ago) link
though the other side of that coin is that it's much harder to accept these all tagged and dropped up than yer average fatboi or zaytoven track

these are good but imo if this is the direction hes headed in, beginning of the end

that swizz beat is weak & i want to see him stick w/ zaytoven is that so wrong
'bandwagon' has nothing to do w/ it -- obv gucci is killing most of these tracks -- i just think we're watching a transition into a less-gucci gucci if hes gonna start rapping over bland fake blaze beats
― its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah but i mean..he's been doing lots of songs with name producers and especially bangladesh for like a year now. and it seems ridiculous to refer to 2 songs (which you said yourself are GOOD) from such a prolific artist as a possible 'direction he's headed in' unless you're just trying to predict a shark jump before it happens.
― Jonae Mitchelle (some dude), Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:11 (thirteen years ago) link
i think the swizz track is cool... my only problem with it is that -- kinda like that song he did with wale -- i think he gets swallowed up a bit when he's on a big, brassy beat like that. the bangladesh song is dope.
i disagree with deej esp if we're talking about "the beginning of the end" which is really some bullshit considering how well he's still rapping -- not only does it make sense for him to step out with big name producers, i really do relish it, cuz certainly one of the valid criticisms of 'the state vs radric davis' was "how is this different than his mixtapes?" aside from the (needless) guest spots. i love drumma boy & fatboi as much as the next guy but he's recorded literally hundreds of songs with the three of them (incl zaytoven).
it's not like he's, you know, recording with dr. luke or something. swizz & bangladesh etc are guys that have been able to bridge the gap between street rap and pop rap in very interesting ways & i think that's one of the things we've all loved about gucci for a long time. these are sensical pairings & i think they are/have been fruitful ones, and i look forward to more.
― ronaldimho (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:40 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah...to me a rapper heading in a possible discouraging direction is like T.I. doing a song like "Whatever You LIke" for the first time and hitting #1 with it, like you know that's gonna influence future decisions. doing one generic Swizz Beatz song that gets floated out on an unofficial mixtape is probably not a harbinger of anything.
― Jonae Mitchelle (some dude), Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:48 (thirteen years ago) link
also love that "Man Of The Year" sounds nothing like typical Bangladesh aside from having some awesome live bass playing like "Lemonade" (lame hook though).
― some dude, Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link
what was good about him recording w/ storch though was that it felt like those dudes were stepping into his world, not the other way around. 'sounded too much like the mixtapes' was not a criticism when his mixtapes are some of my favorite music of the past couple years. i do think bangladesh is a really good foil for him in terms of balancing this tension tho -- no question 'lemonade' is his biggest hit this year bcuz he & bangladesh have a similar kind of weird relationship w/ 'pop' & pop
― its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:50 (thirteen years ago) link
& yeah the hook is the only bad part
fwiw im not trying to get ms cleo cool points for this -- i mean we all know like w/ basically all non-scarface artists, dudes will have career arcs & at some point it will be the beginning of the end. maybe im too much like simon reynolds saying timbaland was 'over' in like 1999 or whatever here but i do think its something to keep an eye on

i think maybe this convo would make more sense if Storch seamlessly blending into Gucci's style didn't make it on the album and Swizz forcing his style on him did instead of vice versa.
― some dude, Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:52 (thirteen years ago) link
im talking chronology -- swizz track just dropped, storch track was last year
― its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Sunday, 13 June 2010 19:54 (thirteen years ago) link
if this is an indicator of a future direction -- etc
i like that dudes like forks arent feeling 99% of the gucci beats so far -- if hes gonna convert forks-style rap fans i want it to be over some massive 'stay fly'/'what you know about that' undeniably dope ish & not some bland NY horn boom bap
