12 shot dead in lake district

At least 12 people were fatally wounded today after a taxi driver went on the rampage with a shotgun in the Lake District before killing himself.

Derrick Bird (52), a divorced father-of-two, murdered two colleagues in the centre of the coastal town of Whitehaven this morning before driving across Cumbria shooting other victims, apparently at random.

Several hours later, following a major manhunt amid calls for residents to stay indoors, police found his body 30km away in woods near the hamlet of Boot.

The exact number of casualties was not known but Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament earlier that at least five people had been killed. Police said at least 25 people had been injured and denied reports that the gunman's mother was among the victims.

Latest rolling headline on the BBC site. I really hope there are no more deaths.

I can't decide what's worse - BBC News rolling coverage - which was basically someone standing in the street saying how shocked everyone was or the fact that they abandoned that because some footballers were about to, maybe, get on a plane.

Nice bit of speculation along the 'Broken Britain' lines from the Telegraph:

One of the central lines of inquiry surrounded the theory that a row had developed over the will of Bird’s mother, Mary, who is seriously ill.

The solicitor — Kevin Commons — may have been advising the family.

It was also reported that Bird had initially armed himself with two guns on Tuesday night, but was disarmed by a friend.

Bird is then believed to have sought medical help at a local hospital for his fragile mental state, only to be turned away.

All quite peculiar for me - I've not lived up there for 12 years but every place they mention I know quite well. Rented a flat 30sec from the taxi rank, been to and through Gosforth, Egremont and Seascale many times, went on a walk to Ennerdale Bridge once through Frizington and Rowrah. Pretty sure I recognised the Scouse cabbie they interviewed on R4 this morning.

Can't wait for the Telegraph to call for someone to Ban This Sick Filth:

Derrick Bird, the Cumbria gunman, spent the night before his killing spree watching a violent film at his best friend's house before asking, as he left: "Do you think I'm paranoid?"

[...]

As they talked, they watched On Deadly Ground, an action film involving multiple killings and starring Steven Seagal, which was on television.

Ala. prof charged in brother's 1986 shooting death

CANTON, Mass. — A biology professor charged with killing three of her colleagues at an Alabama university has been indicted in the 1986 shooting death of her brother in Massachusetts, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Authorities had originally ruled that the shooting of Amy Bishop's brother was an accident, but they reopened the case after Bishop was charged in February with gunning down six of her colleagues at the University of Alabama-Huntsville, killing three.

Bishop, 45, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 18-year-old brother, Seth, Norfolk District Attorney William Keating said.

Keating said he did not understand why charges were never brought against Bishop.

"I can't give you any explanations, I can't give you excuses, because there are none," he said. "Jobs weren't done, responsibilities weren't met and justice wasn't served."

Gun (file photo) Police said the gunman was a former employee of Emcore

A 37-year-old gunman has killed three people before shooting himself at an office building in Albuquerque, in the US state of New Mexico, police say.

Another four people were injured at the offices of technology manufacturer Emcore, in what local police said was a domestic violence-related incident.

Police at first said the man had killed five others but later revised the toll.

Officials said the gunman, who opened fire just before 0930 local time (1530 GMT), was a former Emcore employee.

His ex-wife is also believed to work for the company.

It is unclear whether she was killed or injured in the incident.

People living and working in the area were warned by police to stay indoors for several hours.

Company: At least 3 shot at Conn. beer distributor

(AP) – 35 minutes ago

MANCHESTER, Conn. — A company executive says a warehouse worker who had been called in to resign opened fire at a beer distributor in Connecticut and at least three people were shot.

It was not immediately clear whether anyone was killed in the shooting Tuesday morning in Manchester, about 10 miles east of Hartford.

The executive, Brett Hollander of Hartford Distributors, says the company is "just trying to figure out who's shot, who's not accounted for." He says 50 to 70 people were inside and that a fire at the warehouse was out.

South Windsor police Sgt. Scott Custer would only say that several people are "down" and did not say how many were hurt or how badly.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Don't know how much disgruntlement was involved but

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- A masked man armed with an assault-style rifle fired dozens of shots at a birthday party at a home in western Indianapolis early Tuesday, killing two people and wounding six before fleeing, police said.

Around 30 people were attending the barbecue when the shooting happened shortly after midnight, Indianapolis police Lt. Jeff Duhamell said. A motive was not immediately known.

A man and a woman died at the scene and six people were taken to the hospital in stable condition, including one partygoer who had been shot in the neck and another who was shot in the back, Duhamell said.

"We're talking at least 25-30 rounds from a high-powered rifle, so although eight people were shot, it could've been a lot worse," he said.

He did not have details of the firearm used in the attack except that it was an assault-style rifle, "an AK or SKS."

Duhamell said the gunman had been wearing a ski mask, and that he fired from the street and then a car before fleeing. It wasn't clear if a getaway driver was also involved.

Nine people have died in a shooting at a beer distribution warehouse in Manchester, Connecticut.

A warehouse driver, identified as 34-year-old Omar Thornton, who was asked to resign his job with Hartford Distributors, refused and then opened fire.

The gunman apparently turned the gun on himself after killing eight others.

Joanne Hannah's daughter, Kristi, dated Thornton for eight years. She tells NECN that every man has their breaking point -- after he had dealt with racial harassment at work.

"We are shocked," said Hannah.

Governor Rell issued the following statement on the workplace shooting this morning at Hartford Distributors in Manchester:

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the employees and families of the victims. In the wake of this tragedy, we are all left asking the same questions: How could someone do this? Why did they do this?

"It was a senseless act of violence that has left us all shaken and reminds us just how precious and fragile life truly is."

buzza, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link

A woman who knows the driver who fatally shot at least eight co-workers and himself at a Connecticut beer distribution company says he had complained of racial harassment at work.

Joanne Hannah says her daughter dated Omar Thornton for the past eight years. She says her daughter had no indication he planned anything violent Tuesday morning after he was asked to resign from Hartford Distributors and refused.

Hannah says Thornton, a black man, had complained to his superiors about a picture of a noose and a racial epithet in a bathroom at the distributor. Her daughter told her the supervisors did not respond to his complaints.

This is fucking sad. :(

Hannah says Thornton called his own mother after the rampage "to say goodbye and that he loved everybody."

A US man has killed himself after shooting dead five people, including his wife and stepdaughter, in an argument about his breakfast.

Stanley Neace, 47, went on the killing spree in a trailer park in Jackson, rural Breathitt County, Kentucky.

He chased his wife into a neighbouring trailer where he shot her, her daughter and three witnesses, reports say.

State troopers found Mr Neace dead at the porch of his trailer, slumped over his own gun.

Mr Neace flew into a rage when his wife Sandra, 54, brought him some eggs for breakfast, a relative of the neighbours he killed said.

Mrs Neace's daughter Sandra Strong, 28, was also killed.
Commotion

The other victims were named as neighbours Dennis Turner, 31, Teresa Fugate, 30, and Tammy Kilborn, 40.

Ms Fugate was shot in front of her seven-year-old daughter, who Mr Neace spared.

"Her daughter said, 'Please, please don't shoot me,' and he said, 'All right, you can leave,' and she ran out," Ms Fugate's sister Sherri Anne Robinson told the Associated Press.

Mrs Kiborn was another neighbour who stepped out onto her porch during the commotion, reports said.

Mr Neace apparently waited an hour for the police to arrive before turning the gun on himself, police heard the shot as they drove up to the trailer.

Other neighbours had fled in terror during the rampage.

Breathitt county is Kentucky's rural eastern region, where gun ownership numbers are high.

"Over eggs? I thought that was crazy. I mean just because his eggs weren't hot?" Ms Robinson said.
