anybody want my unlocked 3GS? ...

fruiting bodies of minds in agony (dyao), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 09:39 (thirteen years ago) link

my main issue with my 3G is how slow and unresponsive it often gets (am I alone?) - so I don't know how much the iP4 would be worth it for me

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 09:41 (thirteen years ago) link

my friend says her 3G has the same problem. how much free space do you have left? how many apps do you have installed?

fruiting bodies of minds in agony (dyao), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 09:43 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah people have been telling me to get rid of apps and free up some space but I did try that and the phone remained as laggy as before (the weird thing is that this problem appeared progressively over time as if the phone was worn out)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 10:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Gruber turns Howard Hughes:

One thing that Apple didn’t mention in the keynote, though, is that the LCD pixels are much closer to the surface of the touchscreen. On existing iPhones (and iPods, and iPads), there is not a lot of distance between the glass surface and the LCD, but there is some. There’s also a very narrow amount of air between the touchscreen glass and the underlying LCD. If you’ve ever got a bit dust under your display, that dust is in the air between the glass and LCD.

baaderonix, you might have some luck from doing a reinstall and restore. also if your total free space on the phone is, say, less than 1 GB, that may also cause problems.

fruiting bodies of minds in agony (dyao), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 11:04 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks dyao - yeah I generally try to keep 2GB free but I might do an overall restore and see if that helps.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 12:04 (thirteen years ago) link

My 3G is laggy as hell too, I got it replaced because it was bugging me so much and I'd restored it a few times and all that. But my new one is pretty much the same now too.

I used my friends 3GS and it made me sad to see how it was all supposed to run. Really smoothly. Honestly I just think that's how 3G's are going to be with each successive new OS/software etc. I mean telling you its because of apps or that one thing is causing the phone to be slow is some bullshit. It just feels like an old computer struggling to run the new stuff people are coming out with. Sure, it can technically run it, but not without a bit of a struggle. Seems more disheartening with a phone though. The whole thing kinda runs like using the 'all windows' function in exposé when you've got way too many open... (apparently having 11 firefox windows open each with multiple tabs slows things down some, who knew?)

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 12:51 (thirteen years ago) link

my 3g only gets slow if i accidentally check mail in the bg while i'm trying to do something else, which is easy to do if you "turn it on" and it's in the mail app

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I'm afraid I have to agree with Suedey. The 3G really feels like a sad old compaq 386 struggling to keep up. Yet this phone is what, two years old? ah modern times...

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:05 (thirteen years ago) link

just dont check your email and do something else! i swear! mine works great when that's not happening!

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:05 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe you just don't know what 'great' truly is

fruiting bodies of minds in agony (dyao), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:08 (thirteen years ago) link

never check your email or your bank balance.

caek, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:09 (thirteen years ago) link

most irritating lag is when texting and the stuff you type comes out in a blurb 10 seconds later - and then realizing that you need to go back to correct a typo with that annoying magnifier.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i swear most of the time mine is laggy is cuz it's doing something in the bg, which = email checkin'

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I only check the mail manually no fetch , no push.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:15 (thirteen years ago) link

although I have plenty of apps pushing stuff - so am I expected to turn this off for the phoen to work? Might as well dig out my nokia 6600 then

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i check it manually too. but if you put your phone to sleep while it's in mail, then re-open it to make a call or wtv, it will auto-check for mail.

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:22 (thirteen years ago) link

I like to watch it struggle to try and understand what to do when I get an incoming call and I'm like, playing a game or doing anything

If it's really going for it I'm pretty someone could get my voicemail before even get a good opportunity to answer

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:57 (thirteen years ago) link

As long as you dont use any of the things you're basically fine tho

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm always disappointed at the irregularity of things actually getting pushed at me any. If this a fault of the specific app or the phone?

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

As nice as this new phone looks, I can't ugrade until there is something better than the 3g network out there. Nothing drives me crazier than having an awesome new phone and it spins its wheels on the cellular data connection.

Jeff, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually kinda worried about what the new OS is gonna do to my 3G. Multitasking sounds great but uh...

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:02 (thirteen years ago) link

no multi for 3g

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:04 (thirteen years ago) link

so tempted to unload my iphone on craigslist, ugh

⚖ on my truck (dyao), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:05 (thirteen years ago) link

RETINA SCREEN, do you see

⚖ on my truck (dyao), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, didnt notice multi wasnt even on 3G. Makes sense but it's kinda sad. Your phone isn't even capable of multitasking! It might break!

I wonder when they'll let me upgrade. I have somehow made a habit of buying Apple products at only the most foolish times.

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:11 (thirteen years ago) link

well it's NOT capable of it... i mean if you're complaining about performance now

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

u can't have everything dog.

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

No I know, I just meant it's kinda sad that it's not even capable of it! It still feels kind of fast for it to start lagging so far behind to me.

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:29 (thirteen years ago) link

just doesn't have the RAM iirc

NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:34 (thirteen years ago) link

they are pushing it into 3G users' faces now to upgrade to 4, and anyone who got it at launch should be eligible for upgrade around now right?

Nhex, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

no multitasking? yeah that phone is now a true dinosaur...

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

time for ram upgrades for phones imo

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:38 (thirteen years ago) link

in the form of really bulky add ons

I also want the ram expansion to be only 4mb

a massive 1009k of ram! share it between your iphones!

Yeah but what if, for example, you got your phone at the wrong time... you know, like an idiot, because you were all fuck waiting for a 3GS, I want a new phone right now! I mean, I'm fine with waiting, I just dont want my phone to be creaking to a halt because it's struggling to handle anything anymore. I mean mainly I just wonder how I can get out of the cycle where I'll be eligible to upgrade a month before the next new phone is released while retaining an actual phone to use.

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I got a 3gs last November-ish, and am kind of considering seeing if I can sell it to a friend when these new ones come out. I've turned back into a consumer whore for electronics, though.

mh, Tuesday, 8 June 2010 14:55 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah I'm wondering for how much I could dump my 3G here in Belgium where I -lol- payed full price for it (since tied sales are banned here)...

i was over halfway done with a 2gb file download when i decided to mess around with safari extensions. safari crashed and now the download begins again. fUCK MY LIFE

gruber as an armchair typographer is especially painful to read

There’s a reason why most page layout programs considered “Hyphenation and Justification” to be two aspects of the same feature. I strongly agree that you should never use justification without good hyphenation — let alone without any hyphenation at all.

The iPhone 4 has an outstanding display... and I'm glad that Apple resisted the emotional rush to OLEDs because they still need lots of improvement before they will be ready to compete with the highly refined IPS LCDs. The iPhone 4 display should be comparable to the outstanding IPS LCD in the Motorola Droid, which I tested and compared to the Nexus One OLED, which was trounced by the Droid.

Steve Jobs claimed that the iPhone 4 has a resolution higher than the retina - that's not right:

1. The resolution of the retina is in angular measure - it's 50 Cycles Per Degree. A cycle is a line pair, which is two pixels, so the angular resolution of the eye is 0.6 arc minutes per pixel.

2. So if you hold an iPhone at the typical 12 inches from your eyes, that works out to 477 pixels per inch. At 8 inches it's 716 ppi. You have to hold it out 18 inches before it falls to 318 ppi.

So the iPhone has significantly lower resolution than the retina. It actually needs a resolution significantly higher than the retina in order to deliver an image that appears perfect to the retina.

It's a great display, most likely the best mobile display in production (and I can't wait to test it) but this is another example of spec exaggeration.
