I got a 3gs last November-ish, and am kind of considering seeing if I can sell it to a friend when these new ones come out. I've turned back into a consumer whore for electronics, though.

yeah I'm wondering for how much I could dump my 3G here in Belgium where I -lol- payed full price for it (since tied sales are banned here)...

i was over halfway done with a 2gb file download when i decided to mess around with safari extensions. safari crashed and now the download begins again. fUCK MY LIFE

gruber as an armchair typographer is especially painful to read

There’s a reason why most page layout programs considered “Hyphenation and Justification” to be two aspects of the same feature. I strongly agree that you should never use justification without good hyphenation — let alone without any hyphenation at all.

The iPhone 4 has an outstanding display... and I'm glad that Apple resisted the emotional rush to OLEDs because they still need lots of improvement before they will be ready to compete with the highly refined IPS LCDs. The iPhone 4 display should be comparable to the outstanding IPS LCD in the Motorola Droid, which I tested and compared to the Nexus One OLED, which was trounced by the Droid.

Steve Jobs claimed that the iPhone 4 has a resolution higher than the retina - that's not right:

1. The resolution of the retina is in angular measure - it's 50 Cycles Per Degree. A cycle is a line pair, which is two pixels, so the angular resolution of the eye is 0.6 arc minutes per pixel.

2. So if you hold an iPhone at the typical 12 inches from your eyes, that works out to 477 pixels per inch. At 8 inches it's 716 ppi. You have to hold it out 18 inches before it falls to 318 ppi.

So the iPhone has significantly lower resolution than the retina. It actually needs a resolution significantly higher than the retina in order to deliver an image that appears perfect to the retina.

It's a great display, most likely the best mobile display in production (and I can't wait to test it) but this is another example of spec exaggeration.

(xp) iphone resolution debunking debunked, kinda:

So far so good. Need to change my prepaid AT&T plan to a post-paid one first (doing this tomorrow), but I do have a 32GB on the way

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 10:21 (thirteen years ago) link

I managed to order a 32GB one from AT&T at about 8am yesterday. Coincided nicely with the arrival of my 7th (6th replacement) Blackberry Bold.

I was gonna but I'll wait to see if the O2 sets are subsidised at all

Orange have announced their prices and tariffs now.

Is it worth an extra £100 for 16GB more memory. I'll still be using my iPod for the gym/car etc so will probably only be using the phone for browsing, streaming & gaming

groovypanda, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:13 (thirteen years ago) link

personally, no, but then I've only ever bought the lowest capacity of any apple goods and manually managed media from there

good to see the payg phones are lower than the apple stock price; hopefully O2 will try to undercut

cozen, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I got a spot to pick up at the apple store, but I'm not optimistic that is actually going to work. Especially because I need two of them and the reservation only guarentees one. Plus the lines are going to be fraking insane at the Michigan Ave store.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:22 (thirteen years ago) link

Also really annoying that they will only ship to your billing address. The address I am never at during time when mail comes.

Jeff, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I bought the 32gb last time and have ... 14gb available. It's not big enough to hold all my iTunes, and I can't be faffed with making playlists etc, so I don't bother. Spotify handles all the rest.

Am going to get the 16gb this time I reckon, and probably from Apple. Fuck these monster tarriffs and 24-mo contracts imo

Capped at 500MB now isn't it?

http://shop.o2.co.uk/new-iphone/tariffs.html

And can you get a micro-sim on simplicity? A friend got blank looks from staff at an O2 shop yesterday when he asked that question.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:51 (thirteen years ago) link

you can cut up your old sim tho no? thought the 500MB cap wasn't coming in for a while? iunno, I'm currently on that simplicity deal

cozen, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah, think the cap is only for new contracts. So if you've got a number of months left on your simplicity contract they'll honour the unlimited 3G data

groovypanda, Wednesday, 16 June 2010 12:56 (thirteen years ago) link

orange has pay monthly sim only in various configurations: i use the racoon one.

I'm really struggling with the 16gb capacity so 32gb is looking really attractive. Will the phone be thicker though?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 16 June 2010 13:10 (thirteen years ago) link

no, it's thinner

you can just cut an ordinary sim to make a micro-sim? Top.

I bought a 32 GB last time and like stet...have 16 gigs free atm. the original thinking was to use the extra space for storing TV episodes, etc., but it turns out that watching video on an iPhone is not that pleasant of an experience.

I wonder how most DVD media @ 480p will look on an iPhone 4 which has more than twice the resolution

New iTunes has fixed slow cover art scrolling, it must be compressing all the too large images I added myself.

having been loyal to blackberry for quite a few years now i'm thinking of jumping ship. the new bold is terrible and has all kind of problems (internet browsing is useless, connection cuts out, os constantly hangs + crashes). but i'm worried about the impact of owning an iPhone on my personal brand and more importantly i'm still not sold on touch screen technology. the thought of how greasy the thing will get just freaks me out! and most ppls iphones seem to end up with cracked screens somehow or other. is it really possible to type fast on these things?

i'm mostly kidding btw but in my experience buying apple gear has made me the subject of ridicule from ppl at work (hardcore unix geeks etc)

osx is based on unix so what's the conflict? new iphones have much stronger glass/touch is probably better than android based phones in terms of responsiveness. the screen does look like a greasy mess especially if you take a call on a hot day after having sweated for a bit. in fact NIVEA's new ad campaign here is based on the fact that your phone won't get greased up by skin oils after taking calls if you use their face wash.

still am only so-so with iphone keyboard after about a year, don't really use it to send emails or post to ILX too often.

dyao, Thursday, 17 June 2010 11:35 (thirteen years ago) link

gonna try and have a play with one i think. blackberry is amazing for typing but really that is it.
