ah ok. i wouldn't have guessed from the 100s of possibilities without that clue, but i'm still proud of my ability to guess what part of what state.

harbl, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

harbl you are mad skilled, stanm you should be ashamed of yourself. i should too though cause i never get anything done when this thread is alive

del griffith, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

well i did think something in the uk might be west virginia earlier

harbl, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

sorry :-(

Won't do it again.

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:02 (thirteen years ago) link

are there other small towns in southern illinois that are in the same state of repair as Cairo?

(i know about east stl)

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

― harbl, Wednesday, June 9, 2010 2:01 PM (

could say there are sorta similarities in a way between pennine milltowns in the UK and western PA (and parts of WV i guess?)

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

ah I'd picked cairo because I thought it was kind of an extreme example and might be got fairly easily (which it was, i didnt know you could cheat tho - i will be better prepared next time)

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, it was mostly that and the mix of mountains and fields, but WV looks more forested in my experience driving through

harbl, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

is cairo known for something then?

harbl, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd thought it was sorta well known just for being a complete wreck (80% depopulation according to wikipedia)

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i'm reading the wikipedia now, i didn't know about it! very interesting.

harbl, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:15 (thirteen years ago) link

there's a couple youtube videos which are pretty good, driving round it. one with an old woman talking about how it used to be before the war, which is great, and one with corny ambient music but does show the almost completely abandoned downtown

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Love Kay-ro an places like that in So. Ill, used to drive over there when I went to SIUC.

charleston, wv?

del griffith, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I agree it looks Appalachian -- Scranton, PA?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 14:45 (thirteen years ago) link

both kinda good guesses but at same time not all that close either

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 11:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Spokane?

kate78, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 12:15 (thirteen years ago) link

now thats a lot further away!

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:10 (thirteen years ago) link

montpelier, vt?

caek, Thursday, 8 July 2010 11:33 (thirteen years ago) link

nope - the first two guesses charleston and scranton were good in general terms - its sorta between the two. Thought someone would have got closer though

cherry blossom, Thursday, 8 July 2010 11:50 (thirteen years ago) link

there is nothing there to tell me it is american, except (possibly) for the width of the road. the hills in the background look like foothills, old and hunkered down. probably north-eastern, with a river (crossed by a bridge in the background)... could be springfield, ma? a piece of albany, ny?

ampersand (remy bean), Thursday, 8 July 2010 11:52 (thirteen years ago) link

God you have a lot of cities I've never heard of in the States.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Thursday, 8 July 2010 11:58 (thirteen years ago) link

being from upstate ny i feel like that is a good guess but i don't know which city. what about utica?

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Thursday, 8 July 2010 12:00 (thirteen years ago) link

118 is kind of a hard one (though people have got harder ones!) - I'll reveal at the end of the day if no one has it (charleston is nearest guess so far)

this should be achievable though

utica, ny: the only place i have ever seen kids playing in the street next to a car on fire. it was like sarajevo, or one of those movies from the '80s about white teachers who go to bad neighborhoods to condescend to black people.

This is kinda turning into Guess the College-Town/County Seat/Small Burgh.

kate78, Thursday, 8 July 2010 12:06 (thirteen years ago) link

That white rounded conical object in the middle foreground of 118 might be a road salt depository, in which case someplace far north enough to get serious snow.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 8 July 2010 12:09 (thirteen years ago) link

what about altoona

the girl with the butt tattoo (harbl), Thursday, 8 July 2010 12:14 (thirteen years ago) link

getting called a "city" is a pretty easy lay in the u.s., chap.
