I'm installing iOS4 right now.

JimD, Thursday, 17 June 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually I've already installed it, I'm just waiting for my apps etc to restore themselves over.

JimD, Thursday, 17 June 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

osx is based on unix so what's the conflict?

Professional jealously perhaps? At least that's been my experience when I can install packages with MacPorts significantly faster than it takes one of the snobs to sort out their config files.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 17 June 2010 19:06 (thirteen years ago) link

ayo i love it and am a maintainer of my own little package (if you've used a2ps on macports then please paypal me $), but macports is a piece of shit compared to debian.

caek, Friday, 18 June 2010 00:33 (thirteen years ago) link

i still play drop7 daily. like whoa.
reeder is essential as well, stet otm
words with friends, cia factbook, wikipanion, that's about all i use. should delete the other hundred apps i never open

I'll give you that, but I also have to deal with clients who have Solaris and still believe Linux to be a not-serious OS for hackers. (yes I KNOW I KNOW)

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 18 June 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I ordered an iphone 4, but the typing promises to be as awful as ever.

schwantz, Friday, 18 June 2010 02:45 (thirteen years ago) link

i am typing this on solaris : (

caek, Friday, 18 June 2010 03:56 (thirteen years ago) link

The typing is fine! Maybe not as responsive as a buttoned keyboard, but I can post on ilx using iphone or iPad easily these days.

So hmm, OS4 feels a lot snappier on my 2yr old 3G, but that could easily just be the snappiness of a freshly restored phone rather than any actual performance improvement - won't know for sure unless it lasts (and I'm probably not going to keep this handset long enough to test that). It's nice to be able to do this though:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4066/4709374215_034cdfde89_o.jpg

and do away with all that side swiping. Beyond folders and the new email client (given that the 3G can't multitask), not much else seems to have changed significantly.

JimD, Friday, 18 June 2010 07:21 (thirteen years ago) link

isn't facebook a comms?

stofu (cozen), Friday, 18 June 2010 07:58 (thirteen years ago) link

what exactly is new in the email client?

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 18 June 2010 08:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Threaded conversations, and (apparently) multiple accounts in the same inbox (although I've not tested that, last thing I want is work mails popping up as unread on my phone).

Yeah, couldn't decide where to put facebook, but "news" basically means "things I check compulsively several times a day".

JimD, Friday, 18 June 2010 08:20 (thirteen years ago) link

have i missed something JimD? where is Zing Touch???

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm glad they've finally added an orientation lock

stofu (cozen), Friday, 18 June 2010 09:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, how do I shot that? Also can't figure out how to change my desktop background or whatever you want to call it.

Um, heh, sorry but I deleted zing touch. I find ilx works pretty well in safari anyway, and syncs up with the desktop (ie if I read a thread up to a certain point on my phone then switch to my PC, it knows what's new). The app wasn't giving me that. Plus I missed the hollow/filled bullets for new/no-new posts.

stofu (cozen), Friday, 18 June 2010 10:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I always found the text wayyyy too small to read on Safari..

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 18 June 2010 10:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, apparently it's another one of the things the 3G can't cope with:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=930990

Which is kinda bullshit tbh. Sure, I can accept that the underpowered 3G can't multitask, but locking the orientation can't possibly strain the CPU, and the 3G can still do ipod in the background, so there's really no reason it couldn't have had that basic "pod controls plus screen lock" mini menu popped in there.

This is why I can't find the wallpaper option either.

you need to get on the bookmarks bandwagon

max, Friday, 18 June 2010 12:08 (thirteen years ago) link

zing is the best

dan selzer, Friday, 18 June 2010 12:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah, not while it's still giving me this:

type Status report

message /ILX/Pages/confirmdeletebookmark.jsp

description The requested resource (/ILX/Pages/confirmdeletebookmark.jsp) is not available.

JimD, Friday, 18 June 2010 12:19 (thirteen years ago) link

sounds like you're still using old-school bookmarking. switch to the modern kind (in preferences) and it'll work again.

stet, Friday, 18 June 2010 12:27 (thirteen years ago) link

oh wow, I wish I'd complained about that months ago. Thanks stet. :)

JimD, Friday, 18 June 2010 12:30 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah zing made me fully realize the glory of bookmarking. awesome app, altho I never found much use for the desktop version

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 18 June 2010 12:33 (thirteen years ago) link

I have a new version of the desktop version that's basically a rip-off of the Tweetie for Mac interface that I like a lot for leaving open and watching new threads. It's got a few months of work in it before it's usable for anyone else though, and making Zing Touch multitask comes first

stet, Friday, 18 June 2010 12:46 (thirteen years ago) link

When is iOs4 available to the general public?

Jeff, Friday, 18 June 2010 13:27 (thirteen years ago) link

24th iirc

stet, Friday, 18 June 2010 13:38 (thirteen years ago) link

are you grabbing a 4G day 1 stet?

stofu (cozen), Friday, 18 June 2010 13:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Nah, 3Gs is fine for me, tbh (Think Madchen is tho)

stet, Friday, 18 June 2010 14:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm getting a 4G because I skipped the 3GS

dyao, Friday, 18 June 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm bored, so let's tell a story posting one word at a time.

HI DERE, Friday, 18 June 2010 16:53 (thirteen years ago) link

agree with dayo, btw- the 'cunty' on it's own wasn't the problem, but i really have lost my appetitie.

Customer very clearly states what they want, sales representative tells them a lot of useless crap and then acts really condescending. Just like every cell phone store!

BTW I thought it was universally reviewed that the Evo sucks, bad phone for comparison IMO.

mh, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 18:51 (thirteen years ago) link

so verizon is getting the iphone in january, all but confirmed.

akm, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

from 2 people.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 22:00 (thirteen years ago) link

well confirmed by two anonymous sources, so I guess I mean "all but officially confirmed by the companies". anyway I'll hold out on an upgrade until I know what's happening, I'd be happy to get off att and be back on verizon. Or maybe att will become cheaper and better as a result of the competition.

akm, Tuesday, 29 June 2010 23:37 (thirteen years ago) link

see if verizons coverage is as good as they claim, and the customer service even marginally better than att, then I'm inclined to wait and then jump ship to an intro pricing deal with them

flapjackin (gbx), Tuesday, 29 June 2010 23:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i had pretty similar coverage on verizon as i do on att, but i understand that's not usual
