The only real problem with the Hype Machine (apart from trawling through lists of 15 Spoon tracks in a row) it that it really lays bare the unbelievable and terrifying amount of stuff out there. At the same time, I really wish it had existed when I was a teenager and had time to spend six hours a day listening to music.

Actually that could easily apply to most new technology...

The NEW Hype Machine wants to see 10,000 of you before it comes out to play. Leave this page open and it'll reload when everyone's here.

why do i doubt they can get 10000 people to log on at the same time?

Roz, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

it's not technically logging in, it's just 10,000 current page views - just keep a tab open in firefox and keep refreshing.

the hype machine folks probably see this as a form of viral marketing to create buzz for the re-launch.

However only at 1607

Idolator.com seems to be always referencing Hype Machine (and using it to take shots at indie-rock mp3 bloggers)

Says 1603 for me now. They'll never get there if they keep counting backwards!

yeah the numbers go up and down.

Roz, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link

this hype machine viral marketing technique of an announcement splash page is poorly executed though. It frustrates people rather than creating a positive user experience.

djmartian, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:54 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah it's balls. just launch it already.

blueski, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:03 (sixteen years ago) link

morelike HYPE machine amirite?

Dom Passantino, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:04 (sixteen years ago) link

They're not counting backwards - it wants 10,000 people to be viewing that page at the same time. If somebody browses away from it, the number goes down.

Up to 2200-something now.

The music blog zeitgeist is made up of the top 50 artists, the top 50 albums and the top songs of 2009 according to the posts of the music bloggers associated to the hype machine site. The songs and albums are all streamable. 2009 must have been a phantastic year in music given that a remix of The Police's Roxanne is in the top songs list. ;-)

i'll always remember 2009 as the year we lived our lives to a tapestry of classic songs like Super Mash Bros - Living The Dream (I'm On A Float), The Priors - What You Need (Hey Champ Remix) and We Plants Are Happy Plants - Apollo
