I was sprint for many years then switched to verizon. Dumb phone, but still, I cannot believe the reception I get. I've never lost a call, I can talk in elevators, underground, the occasional subway platform...

I've been on Verizon for over five years and the only time I had reception issues was when I was in my dorm(s) -- lol college -- but that was the building's fault and not the networks

or, rather buildings' fault and not the network's

I don't believe these rumours, we've seen them before and I don't think it makes sense for Apple or Verizon (although I'm not sure if I expect them to behave rationally) I am still not convinced there will be a Verizon iPhone heres why:

Even if LTE comes this year it will only be in a few metro areas so the phone will need coverage elsewhere, it has to come in one of two ways:

1) Apple has to put CDMA in the iPhone this means a fairly major redesign to accommodate the new radios, both in terms of chips and possibly in terms of physical package if the antennas on the iPhone 4 don't wrk well with CDMA (different radio frequencies). They will need a whole other engineering team and support infrastructure to answer questions such as 'why can't a browse and make phone calls at the same time?" from users who switch from AT&T in a non LTE area. What's more it is unlikely, given poor experience with 3G that NYC and the Bay Area will be early in the LTE roll out so Apple will not get some of the biggest markets and internal testing off the ground in a timely fashion.

2) Apple puts LTE in the iPhone and Verizon has to buy roaming from AT&T or T-Mobile when users leave LTE areas, which doesn't improve the experience for most users and basically will hand all the profits to a competitor.

I don't doubt Apple has developed and tested CDMA prototypes, always good to have a backup option, but how much pent up demand is there really for a Verizon iPhone, you want an iPhone that badly you can go to AT&T. Having the prototype keeps Verizon on the hook incase the relationship with AT&T goes south and is a stick to extract ridiculous terms from AT&T to maintain exclusivity, almost all of AT&T's subscriber and ARPU growth in recent years is from iPhone.

Finally, Apple is not going to try and drive LTE with the iPhone like it did with USB and the iMac. Different technology, different Apple. USB made sense because it forced Epson and HP to make a cheap change to their printers. LTE is a massive investment and Verizon are more likely to make it quickly if Apple say you can have iPhone when enough of the country is covered with LTE. That rollout is not going to be nearly widespread enough by june 2011 to justify an LTE iPhone.

Oh, and if Apple want to offer global roaming and CDMA, that's another radio they need to squeeze in there.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:08 (thirteen years ago) link

what other GSM networks exist in the US?

caek, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:18 (thirteen years ago) link

T-Mobile

by the way my new house gets no 3G or Edge coverage at all. thanks, o2.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:32 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe you should blame your house

pass le corbusier (s1ocki), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:34 (thirteen years ago) link

never!

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

my "house" (apartment) is the reason i don't get any service. concrete walls and ceiling.

cutty, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:49 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks, house

max, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link

no thanks, house, actually

cutty, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't even get data coverage in my massive tiny, ivy-covered back porch

maybe it's an ivy issue

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:14 (thirteen years ago) link

non-issue. just use different ivy.

caek, Wednesday, 30 June 2010 15:18 (thirteen years ago) link

thanks, ivy

anybody use Slingbox or some sort of a similar product? lol @ how complicated this shit is

ksh, Monday, 5 July 2010 14:01 (thirteen years ago) link

all I want to do is to be able to hook something up to my Comcast box that's in one room and watch the TV on a Mac in the other room over our home network! is there an easy way to do this that isn't totally fucking crazy? i'm not installing any whacky open source maybe-this'll-work-if-you-whack-your-monitor-with-a-hammer-and-configure-10,000-obscure-settings blah blah blah

ksh, Monday, 5 July 2010 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

that's exactly what slingbox is for, i think

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 5 July 2010 14:11 (thirteen years ago) link

okay, awesome. is that considered the best product to use for this kind of thing?

ksh, Monday, 5 July 2010 14:21 (thirteen years ago) link

slingbox is not complicated at all. if you can set up a router you can set up a slingbox.

Omg only now have I discovered drop7. My husband and I are competing. He's at 23500 and I'm at 234700. hahahah

Nathalie (stevienixed), Saturday, 28 August 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Getting this in Paris this w-e I think. Fuck a waiting list

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Saturday, 28 August 2010 13:15 (thirteen years ago) link

OK - when you search for something in itunes why does it default to the start of your library when you clear the search instead of remaining in the area of the selected song

and is there a way to fix that?

coco b ware (cozen), Sunday, 29 August 2010 10:17 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know, it's completely idiotic. I never imagined I'd spend this much time being reminded of the French version of the A- Team soundtrack.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 29 August 2010 10:38 (thirteen years ago) link

yesss that is a huge irritation

max, Sunday, 29 August 2010 23:38 (thirteen years ago) link

If you're playing the song you can apple-L to show it in the library. Pita tho.

The irony is that all post-modern, smugly self-referential retro porn aside, I'd gladly trade in my immaculately designed 21st century gadgets for these hideously clunky, faux-wood-paneled pieces of uber-kitsch. Sorry, Apple.

iPod classic is an unperson.

Ping looks like a halfway mash of Last.fm. They haven't shot iTunes in the head yet either

xps

MORE functionality in itunes

jozam djinn (cozen), Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:44 (thirteen years ago) link

got rid of CD in logo though so there's that

caek, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

guess itv refused to blink

caek, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Won't this Ping™ thing only work with Official Legit RIAA-approved Non-Pirated iTunes Content™, though?

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 17:56 (thirteen years ago) link

unless they refuse to make it work with CDs you rip yourself, i don't see how they can restrict it like that, assuming they'd want to

caek, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

kept notes in logo though, p. good way to describe movies, tv shows, books, apps, iTunes U, photos, podcasts, iOS updates, syncing, and locking up

stet, Wednesday, 1 September 2010 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

no way a social network for music will ever be popular
