just accept that some people think gucci is just "pretty good"

Mr. Altered Zone 6 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:55 (thirteen years ago) link

hold on you're bitching about repetition and you listen to like fucking sunO)))))

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:57 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah it was a dumb thing to jump on you for. and it shouldn't matter how long your reviews were, if you listened to several full-length projects from him before then yeah you're qualified to say what's an old trick.

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway i'm not gonna explain what's so incredibly dope about a song like "normal" -- i'm not sure what you look for in your rap music, altho apparently "good rapping" is not high on the list -- gucci is recording with swizz beatz tho, so check back in a few

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:03 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm not gonna lie, j0rd, i def check for beats first and zaytoven never really did it for me. But because I respect your opinion so much (no xgau), I really did sit down with Mr. Zone 6 and meditate on the lyrics. Gucci and Swizz will prolly be a magic combo for me. I dunno, I mean, the rap albums I like this year are E-40 and Little Brother so ¯\(°_O)/¯

Mr. Altered Zone 6 (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i feel u -- i don't think your opinion on gucci isn't valid, i just think it's wrong

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:39 (thirteen years ago) link

i think that it's flat out great rapping -- but i do understand that only gucci nerds like some of the posters itt will geek out about him bringing 'themes' back or what not

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I still like the Radric LP better than any mixtape too, but maybe that goes back to my love of beats. And albums.

Vuvuzola Jesus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:46 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i could see that -- album got underrated anyway

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 14:50 (thirteen years ago) link

beats on the album really arent better than the mixtape beats generally

whiney whats silly to me is its like rap critics being like "jeez whats wrong with thinking this biggie record is just ok ... my favorite rap albums this year are by scarface and pm dawn!!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_pGNpk6CxI (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

i pretty genuinely think the faux-objective 'sober eye' mainstream crit has towards gucci is lazy genre-preferential condescension so

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_pGNpk6CxI (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 17:23 (thirteen years ago) link

"the best rapper out doing more of the same -- ill give this record a middling score!"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_pGNpk6CxI (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 17:24 (thirteen years ago) link

i do agree its not as good as the e-40 tho

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_pGNpk6CxI (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 17:25 (thirteen years ago) link

the fuck??

what does this even

ok nevermind

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:20 (thirteen years ago) link

those corny critics that 'fell for' Scarface sure are eating crow now, huh

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:21 (thirteen years ago) link

as an outsider to the whole thing, i guess i'll never quite "get it" in terms of how much y'all love gucci

he's a great guest appearance dude for me, he's got charm and is really loveably wacked out in a good way, but ultimately his flow and ways of constructing stuff is so repetitive it gets kinda dull for me (not that i don't like other dudes with repetitive or samey flows, but for whatever reason gucci just doesn't do it for me)

....just the whole gucci like a chupacabra/icey like a candleabra/poopy gucci movie pootie/ fish called wanda thing he does so often kinda grates after awhile

it's detlef season, you schrempfs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:37 (thirteen years ago) link

re: scarface/pm dawn

I might even agree with deej if the 700th gucci mane mixtape had a fraction of the event status or cultural cachet of either of biggie's LPs upon release.

Vuvuzola Jesus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

that's obv not what I'm saying dude - it was a parallel w whiney mentioning e-40.broken clock

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Xps to al

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think it's "obv" at all what they hell you're saying with your increasingly convoluted ways of dissing other people's taste.

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Whiney no rap albums except media driven jay/drake garbage gets event status now bcuz the charts don't actually represent his popularity, there is no mtv monoculture etcetc

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

i think arrested development = little brother and scarface = e-40?

i get the analogy but i don't know exactly what significance it had

it's detlef season, you schrempfs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:43 (thirteen years ago) link

gucci like a chupacabra/icey like a candleabra/poopy gucci movie pootie/ fish called wanda

lmao at this

young monet (samosa gibreel), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Never mind that gucci obv releases his material in a constant stream, it doesn't make sense to expect event records, the living breathing art is always there. The event record is outmoded when no one is excitedly waiting for release dates except the squares who just discovered jay z

Matt that sounds way more like cam than gucci - gucci switches his flow up more than any rapper out there

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I just want to make sure I understand where you're coming from. You're saying that the Mr. Zone 6 mixtape is the 2010 equivalent to, say, Biggie's Life After Death how? Its status as the best/most celebrated/most popular rap album among true hip-hop heads? Rap critics? Casual rap fans? The populace?

idg what u mean...

Vuvuzola Jesus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

there are probably about as many really huge rappers/rap albums that practically everyone in America is familiar with now as there were in 1994 or whatever. Biggie was one of that handful then, Gucci isn't one of that handful now imo.

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Whiney read my last post that's not at all what I'm saying

U guys are way overanalyzing the analogy. How did biggie do in pazz and jop? And this was back when popular rap was beamed into everyones homes, when regular rap fans weren't so easy to ignore

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm trying to understand the analogy

Vuvuzola Jesus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:49 (thirteen years ago) link

xpost to deej

really? like i'll cop to not having heard even 1/20th of what you have but i feel like he has a real identifiable flow

(but that said, hell sean price is like my hero and he is always on his same flow...)

i feel kinda like i dunno an old man here cuz i just can't really place what doesn't click for me

he's just more a good in small doses rapper for me

it's detlef season, you schrempfs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:49 (thirteen years ago) link

imo deej decided a year or two back that Gucci was on his way to being as big as Lil Wayne circa 07/08, and when the available metrics didn't bear that out he decided that the metrics were invalid and he really is that big

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:51 (thirteen years ago) link

The analogy is that gucci is as significant to rap now as big was then. I'm offhandedlly wondering about the parallels w how a legend at the time was recieced by mainstream rock critics.

Somedude that isn't really my argument at all

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

What annoys isn't that he didn't blow up like I thought he would, its that my crit peers can't recognize his creative importance simply because he didnt

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

Also, the available metrics kinda are invalid!!

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Al I'm not arguing chris is rong bcuz gucci is popular, I think he's wrong cuz guccis music is a big deal

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

The analogy is that gucci is as significant to rap now as big was then.

aaaaand you're wrong.

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link

loooool

Vuvuzola Jesus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Aaaand. I disagree

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i still want to know why you think the e-40 double album is better than mr. zone 6, aka the best gucci mane mixtape

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Because the beats blow it out of the fuckin water

Vuvuzola Jesus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:00 (thirteen years ago) link

gucci is like big in the fact that he's easily the most lyrically creative and appealing rapper out right now

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

there are like 600 e-40 albums with dope beats? are these beats really better than the beats on e-40 albums?

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:02 (thirteen years ago) link

the rapping on the gucci mixtape is better than the rapping on any other gucci mixtape, when taken as a whole -- dude is still totally improving as a rapper

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:02 (thirteen years ago) link

the convo isn't about whether gucci is artistically comparable to big, it's about whether he's as BIG as big was, which he's just not, no.

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

and deej is right, pretty much every song on "mr. zone 6" has a different flow -- not sure how he could be called 'repetitive' in that sense

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean i know you're trying to steer the thread toward a point you feel is worth making to take the focus off deej being fulla shit, but sorry. (xpost)

ripe dink (some dude), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

tracing out influence is really hard right now since there are like 3 rappers that anyone cares about

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link

well i've always been more to the center of deej on this issue

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 30 June 2010 21:04 (thirteen years ago) link
