i mean, i can see gucci being huge in chicago. tbf, it is a big "pitchfork town" with drag city and thrill jockey and numero group and everything. i think bands like fucking champs and oxxes are regarded as pop stars in chicago too

tbf pretty sure this is the first time whiney g has made gucci=hipster lol remarks where it was actually trolling & not on a serious "the only ppl who like gucci are hipsters!!!" disconnected bs

j0rdan, deej totally picked a fight w/ whiney and pretty much invited him to come on this thread and crack jokes, i don't blame whiney at all for taking the bait for once

so tom b. wrote a pfork review of the mixtape -- in the scale of pfork rap scores it got a pretty great rating, but i wonder why tom always insists on making a point of what he perceives to be gucci's "stupidity", or at least the "stupidity" of his punchlines -- i'm not accusing him of being an actual racist or a region racist, as tom's writing on southern rap speaks for itself, but his gucci reviews almost function as the snake eating its own tail (maybe two steps forward and one step back would be a better analogy!) -- obv he has to write these reviews knowing that there's still a segment of people (rap fans and normal pfork readers alike) that think that gucci (and any southern rapper in his ilk) is a joke, and of course tom mentions this in his review, and yet he still seems to hedge his bets by flogging this worthless "stupidly awesome..... OR IS IT AWESOMELY STUPID?" bit and quoting lines from the tape that are gucci at his most crass -- the cassanova/bend ya ova and twitpic/dick lines work in the context of the album as gucci goofing around and puffing his chest out, but in the context of a pitchfork review it represents that sort of "one step back", where he sets a tone in the review of, and explicitly says, "gucci is a seriously great rapper! everyone should take him seriously!" but takes out of context quotes that reinforces the exact stereotype that he is trying to dismantle the review -- i don't see why, for instance, he quotes lines illustrating gucci's "non-illmatic levels of insight" (this almost reads as a concession to the current patrin/wale era of pfork rap coverage) but doesn't quote the myriad lines where gucci displays the ability to "jam as many syllables as possible into a quick-rewind clump" or whatever

trying to dismantle IN the review

just want to say thx for all the transcriptions upthread jordan. they ~enhanced~ my experience of listening to this tremendously.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:26 (thirteen years ago) link

no problem! tbh i don't transcribe the gucci lyrics to show off his lyrical prowess (not completely at least), i do it because it really does enhance my listening experiences tremendously as well

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:34 (thirteen years ago) link

if i had the desire/time to sit and read rap lyrics while i listened to albums (as opposed to, like, posting to ilx or playing video games) i think my opinions would solidify much more quickly and i'd be more confident in them

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i've been toying with the idea of making a separate blog to collect all past/future gucci mane lyrics in one place (aside from this thread of course)

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:40 (thirteen years ago) link

you should. the ones that aren't on lyrics sites already. i mean it'd just be c/ping for the most part.

i always make a point of listening to new rap on headphones while walking around, i find it much easier to take in the lyrics then. gucci's enunciation is def one of the less comprehensible out there tho, which is a huge reason why some people don't get him - his lyricism are his forte, his selling point, but if people don't hear what they are w/o paying real attention then...

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 2 July 2010 08:57 (thirteen years ago) link

You bring up a good point, Lex. Even listening to "Shine Blockas," it's like certain producers are unsure how to mix the guy's vocals... I mean, the "Shine Blockas" beat could be to blame too, but I mean, it's hard to make out what the guy says on that song at points, unless you're listening very carefully.

rennavate, Friday, 2 July 2010 09:00 (thirteen years ago) link

that's really just a general problem

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 09:04 (thirteen years ago) link

and by "problem" i mean insofar as newbies "getting him" and understanding why he's good or if you're literally transcribing every word as we do

otherwise his enunciation is obv a total asset to him as a rapper

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 09:06 (thirteen years ago) link

But Zaytoven beats have this problem to a lesser extent, I find.

And I agree, I can't stop playing Zone 6.

rennavate, Friday, 2 July 2010 09:06 (thirteen years ago) link

well zaytoven beats almost always have tons of open space

hell hath no furry (J0rdan S.), Friday, 2 July 2010 09:07 (thirteen years ago) link

And Zay has been working with Gucci for a long time and, I would assume, knows how to compensate for his quarks.

in the "you learn something new" dept, i did not know that:

Quark is a type of fresh cheese, also known as tvorog, topfen, etc.

why does kanye west say topfen

serious question for deej and j0rdan, no zinging or snarkiness should be implied:

There hasn't been an American MC thats done it for me for ages but I've been digging this new mixtape. I mean Gucci always sounds like Gucci, his flow doesn't ever seem to change and neither does his lyrics unless you really dig in but its always solid and I've not heard anything worth listening to in MC led hip-hop for ages. So I'm pretty psyched. He's re-ignited my interest in US hip-hop which to be honest I've not really felt inspired by for ages, its a fucking minefield of shite trying to find the gems in this scene. But Gucci makes it a hell of a lot easier. Gonna treasure this guy untill the drought is over haha

Big up for this thread btw, I dunno if I would have heard much of his stuff without it. He's mostly off the radar round my way...

i think ppl are conflating, like, voice & flow or something? idk i mean he always sounds like himself & slurs his words something crazy but i think camron for ex is a way worse offender in the lazy-flows contest. gucci isnt on like e-40 level, but hes definitely working on keeping his approach fresh u know?

blap...tremendo (deej), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, Gucci's flow is a non-issue. I mean, he's not Drake, if we're talking about dudes with one flow.

rennavate, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:52 (thirteen years ago) link

no i just mean he switches up his flow fairly frequently, it doesnt sound like he gets stuck on the same style to me. im wondering if ppl interpret 'flow' the way i do. flow is like, the rhythmic structure of yr voice. the way you arrange syllables. it seems to me hes better than most at switching that up. if ppl are talking about, like, his articulation, then yes, he always sounds like himself & isnt putting on like nikki minaj type accents or whatever

blap...tremendo (deej), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I think I've heard, I dunno 4/5 Gucci releases, maybe more... all mixtapes/albums whatever. Then loadsa singles and tubes... He's got a formular you can spot and a flow that is easy to spot. But I don't think its an issue yet. Mostly because of his beats though. He chooses some reall out there stuff you don't hear else where. He gets the drum machines doing fucked up skippy workouts that really kill it. His flow is good, it suits his stuff. Its all slow and lazy and kinda chilled out, which plays off his energectic tight skippy lo-fi fruity loop snare hits and twisted pretty hypnotic beats. The thing I like about him best is his flow and beats. His lyrics aint far off either, I'm just not a lyric guy really, I'm slow with that on all genres... but yeah to me, he's just got one flow, it aint a bad thing. I wouldn't change it, wouldn't want him to strain and fuck up at all. Its the best thing about Gucci that he's just Gucci, to many people fuck up and try and do something else.

jimitheexploder, Friday, 2 July 2010 23:08 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i think we're just defining flow differently & more or less agree?

this beat is like the "me & u" or rap beats or something

this is crazy cuz i'm sure it took zaytoven (sounds like him at least) 10 mins to make this beat and gucci 20 mins to write the verses, and the song just floats out into the blog ether and it's just dope as all hell
