There hasn't been an American MC thats done it for me for ages but I've been digging this new mixtape. I mean Gucci always sounds like Gucci, his flow doesn't ever seem to change and neither does his lyrics unless you really dig in but its always solid and I've not heard anything worth listening to in MC led hip-hop for ages. So I'm pretty psyched. He's re-ignited my interest in US hip-hop which to be honest I've not really felt inspired by for ages, its a fucking minefield of shite trying to find the gems in this scene. But Gucci makes it a hell of a lot easier. Gonna treasure this guy untill the drought is over haha

Big up for this thread btw, I dunno if I would have heard much of his stuff without it. He's mostly off the radar round my way...

i think ppl are conflating, like, voice & flow or something? idk i mean he always sounds like himself & slurs his words something crazy but i think camron for ex is a way worse offender in the lazy-flows contest. gucci isnt on like e-40 level, but hes definitely working on keeping his approach fresh u know?

blap...tremendo (deej), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, Gucci's flow is a non-issue. I mean, he's not Drake, if we're talking about dudes with one flow.

rennavate, Friday, 2 July 2010 22:52 (thirteen years ago) link

no i just mean he switches up his flow fairly frequently, it doesnt sound like he gets stuck on the same style to me. im wondering if ppl interpret 'flow' the way i do. flow is like, the rhythmic structure of yr voice. the way you arrange syllables. it seems to me hes better than most at switching that up. if ppl are talking about, like, his articulation, then yes, he always sounds like himself & isnt putting on like nikki minaj type accents or whatever

blap...tremendo (deej), Friday, 2 July 2010 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I think I've heard, I dunno 4/5 Gucci releases, maybe more... all mixtapes/albums whatever. Then loadsa singles and tubes... He's got a formular you can spot and a flow that is easy to spot. But I don't think its an issue yet. Mostly because of his beats though. He chooses some reall out there stuff you don't hear else where. He gets the drum machines doing fucked up skippy workouts that really kill it. His flow is good, it suits his stuff. Its all slow and lazy and kinda chilled out, which plays off his energectic tight skippy lo-fi fruity loop snare hits and twisted pretty hypnotic beats. The thing I like about him best is his flow and beats. His lyrics aint far off either, I'm just not a lyric guy really, I'm slow with that on all genres... but yeah to me, he's just got one flow, it aint a bad thing. I wouldn't change it, wouldn't want him to strain and fuck up at all. Its the best thing about Gucci that he's just Gucci, to many people fuck up and try and do something else.

jimitheexploder, Friday, 2 July 2010 23:08 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i think we're just defining flow differently & more or less agree?

this beat is like the "me & u" or rap beats or something

this is crazy cuz i'm sure it took zaytoven (sounds like him at least) 10 mins to make this beat and gucci 20 mins to write the verses, and the song just floats out into the blog ether and it's just dope as all hell

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 06:40 (thirteen years ago) link

this one is kind of a lark but the zay production is so on point

also gucci's on the BAWSE album on this joint (altho the one w/ his verse hasn't leaked yet) produced by lex luger of "o let's do it"/"hard in da paint" fame -- it sounds epic as fuck tbh

Yeah, I have no idea what he says in those first two lines either. Awesome song, tho.

rennavate, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 06:50 (thirteen years ago) link

this song sounds like some of the mixtape tracks he dropped in like jan last year -- im thinking 'crush on you'

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 07:13 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah -- that whisper flow

the boy boy young messi (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 6 July 2010 07:23 (thirteen years ago) link

finally got around to giving this the full attention it deserves. it's really great, might be his most consistent mixtape yet - there's not really a wasted moment here. no r&b songs either, thankfully.

that said is it rong to say there's no real killer choruses here? no songs (besides maybe "dat's my life") that would crack the gucci top 7 or anything, but 1) that's saying a lot and 2) i'm sure i'll change my mind about that in time

we hold these goofs to be self-permabanned (k3vin k.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:04 (thirteen years ago) link

kev you're right about the choruses -- i feel like the rapping is so above & beyond that he didn't even bother with them -- actually i think the "normal" chorus is great as a classic gucci mane chorus that has as much rhyming and wordplay as a verse & also think the "long money" chorus is totally epic

also agree that there might not be a song here (except maybe "dats my life" or "soldiers and cowards") that would crack my gucci top 10 (altho there are a bunch of singular verses that could) but all songs are like... in the 10-15 caliber range and in succession it's kind of staggering

altered scones (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:07 (thirteen years ago) link

lots of great production, and good beat selection too - can't remember which ones now but i think at least a couple were older songs he was rapping over?

we hold these goofs to be self-permabanned (k3vin k.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:08 (thirteen years ago) link

xp yeah i'm hardly complaining, i mean every song here is just classic mixtape gucci - choruses are all perfectly fine and efficient, and his verses seem more focused than i've seen him in a while, they're all good to great imo. even the guest verses are all pretty good i think

we hold these goofs to be self-permabanned (k3vin k.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:10 (thirteen years ago) link

i still think this is an oddly sober record & its missing a lot of the pop-weirdness im drawn too ... as long as its just another unique mixtape & not a 'future direction of boringness' im fine w/ it though

blap...tremendo (deej), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:22 (thirteen years ago) link

it's much more about verses than anything else

altered scones (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:26 (thirteen years ago) link

i think it's a thrilling tape -- most fun i've had listening to something for the first time all year

altered scones (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 01:26 (thirteen years ago) link

"long money" is the rightful heir to "everything", the #1 epic gucci slow burner

IS THIS ANOTHER JUSTICE SAMPLE

altered scones (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 02:29 (thirteen years ago) link

btw i'm assuming this is a demo cuz the mix sucks and there's no hook

altered scones (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 02:29 (thirteen years ago) link

this is totally a justice sample -- he kills the flow imo

altered scones (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 8 July 2010 02:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i'll buy a hamburger for the first of you fucking new jacks that can tell me where his "the world is very different now" intro is from—without using google

no problem, i spent tons of time producing it because i wanted you to like a gucci mane song
