i don't understand what RAW means, I'm sorry to bring the thread down. all my pics are jpg

jpg's fine too!

ok well i won't be submitting anything top class or anything but would be cool to see what could be done with any of my snaps. i'll try to dig something out.

Everytime I hit 'submit post' the internet gets dumber (darraghmac), Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:43 (thirteen years ago) link

remember, submissions end this Sunday!

for the postprocessing period, I'm thinking about two weeks - how does that sound to everybody?

Sounds fine. If uploading RAW, what is the purpose of the jpg and can I make it small/low quality?

I also apologize in advance for lack of post-processing skills. I'll set an evening aside and read up.

we will all be able to tell which is the best (lukas), Friday, 23 July 2010 01:57 (thirteen years ago) link

no purpose - not everybody on the forum shoots RAW, so I wanted to give non-RAW shooters a chance to participate as well

I just remembered - I think I asked for a JPG because I don't think everybody here is using a program capable of handling RAW files? Is there anybody who will be postprocessing with something other than Lightroom/Aperture/Photoshop?

I'd also be open to extending the submission deadline, if people need more time!

Couldn't seem to choose from old photos so just picked one fairly randomly from a handful of snaps I took today in the local park. CR2/DNG/JPEG - on its way to that gmail address now.

Away for a few days now but interested to see what we have next week...

Michael Jones, Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:55 (thirteen years ago) link

oh shit i need to get on this huh

be told and get high on coconut (gbx), Saturday, 24 July 2010 22:56 (thirteen years ago) link

so I count 6 submissions so far: myself, sciolism, MJ, lukas, milo, and treefell

gbx, you still in? perhaps we should extend the deadline another week to accomodate anybody else?

yah i forgot, will pop something up tonight.

no, you're dead right, it's a macaroon (ledge), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 16:08 (thirteen years ago) link

How about doing it as a rolling thing? Go with what we've got, and another round next week?

rolling is a good idea tho.

yeah that's true - this one seems like kind of a massive undertaking, tbh.

Would Google Buzz be a good way to share these files?

a cross between lily allen and fetal alcohol syndrome (milo z), Wednesday, 28 July 2010 01:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I have never used google buzz before! dunno. anyway looks like some people are still submitting so why not extend the deadline to this Sunday.

dyao, Thursday, 29 July 2010 02:44 (thirteen years ago) link

uh, we still doing this, guys?

her breath came in short pants (sciolism), Sunday, 1 August 2010 22:48 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd be very interested in getting involved with this, just started shooting RAW...
please to advise...

not_goodwin, Sunday, 1 August 2010 22:55 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah - I'm trying to figure out how to divvy up the postprocessing. thinking about randomly assigning everybody 3 photos to postprocess - that way, there won't be *that* much work. on the other hand, we have 9 entries right now (11 if we include not_goodwin and gbx, whenever he gets around to sending one in!) - so maybe the load won't be *that* great. thoughts?

I'll e-mail everybody who's sent one in the password tonight

(sorry, we probably should have chosen a more organized person to do this! heh heh)

not_goodwin - just send a photo you'd like to see postprocessed by others to ilp✧✧✧@gm✧✧✧.c✧✧ (pref. RAW)

dyao, Sunday, 1 August 2010 23:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm happy to have a bash at 8 (or 10) images by others. It's usually quick and dirty Lightroom work with me anyway.

Michael Jones, Sunday, 1 August 2010 23:03 (thirteen years ago) link

oh wait i can't postprocess anything i just submitted a couple crappy pics.

"It's far from 'lol' you were reared, boy" (darraghmac), Monday, 2 August 2010 02:53 (thirteen years ago) link

8-10 isn't too many for me, either, and I think it would be interesting to see everyone's interpretations of all the images.

Perhaps one post on here with all the base JPGs, then each of us could post up our versions on Flickr/PBucket/etc. (with proper attributions, etc. - and maybe we could all take them down off Flickr in a couple of weeks?).

Is there an ILXor Flickr group? That might streamline the posting process.

a cross between lily allen and fetal alcohol syndrome (milo z), Monday, 2 August 2010 05:34 (thirteen years ago) link

no, but I could make one...

will download all the files tonight, compile them into a zip and upload to mediafire, and e-mail everybody the link.

I looked into giving everybody the password to either a dropbox or gmail account but it looks like it's against the ToS and the account could get shutdown if they detect too many logins at once. \(O_o)/

dyao, Monday, 2 August 2010 11:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Sounds good. ILX Flickr pool also a good idea. Shall we all stick to sRGB, considering the difficulties most browsers have with colour management? Or maybe we don't need to worry about subtleties like that.

Michael Jones, Monday, 2 August 2010 11:58 (thirteen years ago) link

There is an ilxor group on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/groups/ilxor/
I kind of think this should still have it's own group, or maybe ILPhotography should have it's own group.

treefell, Monday, 2 August 2010 12:00 (thirteen years ago) link

hey guys sorry i've been out of town at a wedding (where i got some good shots, i think)

still don't know how to send raw?

pies. (gbx), Monday, 2 August 2010 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

did you shoot them as RAW? if not you can juts send the JPG

I downloaded, zipped, and uploaded the files to mediafire, check your inboxes everybody

dyao, Monday, 2 August 2010 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm done! That was a fun way to spend an hour. I've realised that I can't see a sky without graduating the flip out of it. Let me know where to put my processed JPEGs. Milo Z's was the real challenge, I think (I suspect deliberately so) - not sure I rose to it. I didn't process my own photo - was I supposed to?

Michael Jones, Monday, 2 August 2010 22:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Have just had a look, will have a go with them tomorrow.

I can't see a sky without graduating the flip out of it
Ha, even when i'm out shooting, i think about it, "oh i'll grad it later"

I didn't process my own photo - was I supposed to?
i wouldn't have thought so, but i'm not in charge so...?

not_goodwin, Monday, 2 August 2010 23:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's a photo of my grandfather in the worst possible lighting. Nothing I've done with it has made me happy.

a cross between lily allen and fetal alcohol syndrome (milo z), Monday, 2 August 2010 23:36 (thirteen years ago) link

it's not really a competition is it! let me see if I can create an ILX ILP flickr group, and if we can organize group submissions by sets

should we upload them as we finish, or set a deadline for a grand unveiling?

dyao, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 02:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I vote upload as finished - that way no one feels hurried for the grand unveiling.

I, too, am done. I feel like this showed me some of my weaknesses as a post-processor - I'm fairly competent with curves, the histogram and how to work with the color sliders for B&W and a few technical bits, but when it comes to things like graduating skies without looking terrible I'm pretty weak. Lightroom has gotten so complicated and feature-packed, I should probably read a book or take an online course or something.

a cross between lily allen and fetal alcohol syndrome (milo z), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 03:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I've created a flickr group but apparently you can't divide group pool submissions by sets

dyao, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 03:04 (thirteen years ago) link

oh wait - I think I can start topics/threads for each person and everybody can post that person's picture to that thread

Doing them now. What do I do once I finished?

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Monday, 9 August 2010 08:01 (thirteen years ago) link

There's a Flickr pool for them: http://www.flickr.com/groups/ilpilx/

Also, if you feel like it, post a small version in the discussion thread attached to that pool and tell us what you did.

Michael Jones, Monday, 9 August 2010 08:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I've started taking a second bite at the cherry with the images, now that I have more time to look at each individual image.
I just uploaded my second attempt at milo's image. It turned out a bit more extreme than I intended, really.

treefell, Monday, 9 August 2010 11:27 (thirteen years ago) link

really educational seeing what everyone else has done

don't really feel that my standard tourist digital camera pics are worth submission, but did enjoy the results of ppl playing around before tbh.

Sounds good to me, I've a few I can't make my mind up with, so you lot can have a go with 'em.
