kanye in trite lyrics shocker, but i think every song i've heard has at least one awesome quality about it, be it the keyboard on "heartless" or the drums on "love lockdown" or the house-ish beat on the one w/ kid cudi

Trick 239 up, 133 down

1. A derogatory term for women. This word is usually used by males referring to women who engage in sexually mishcievous behavior.

2. A prostitute's client. This led to the phrase "turning tricks," which is used to describe the act of prostitution.
(Origin: 1915)

3. A homosexual male who engages in casual sex.

god if this new dead-ass boring leftover gorillaz tracks w/autotune abuse kanye "sound" becomes the shit, man...i dunno...maybe this is where i get off the bus hip-hop.

man...god this makes postal service sound like MOP

'RAPPERS I WOULD NEVER DREAM OF PUNCHING IN THE FACE?' (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 13 November 2008 17:29 (fifteen years ago) link

this isn't "hip-hop" though + i don't think there is much crossover b/w kanye's core fan base and the fan bases of shit like MOP or ppl who would describe themselves as fans of "real hip-hop"

if anything kanye is just gonna alienate teenagers with this

myspace password secretary (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 13 November 2008 17:31 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah but like i'm serious, this kinda indie new wave shit isn't even good for that type of stuff...the postal service record is way better than this shit....the production is so flat (i think some dude commented on that)...like honestly i'm sort of done with them, but the new tv on the radio stuff is so much better than any of this.

anyway sorry i've been sleeping on this new kanye shit, so i'm sure this is like shit you dudes were talking about like weeks ago...

i'm just sort of in shock, it's like when you run into someone from high school and they are all tweaked out on meth or something, it's just sorta weird.

i'm just sort of in shock, it's like when you run into someone from high school and they are all tweaked out on meth or something, it's just sorta weird.

haha this is a good analogy actually

i see where you're coming from, and i don't disagree w/ you re: the production but like whiney said i'm going to at least hold out until i'm not hearing youtube rips any longer

i think part of why i like kanye's new stuff is because he is probably the biggest pop star in the world so it's cool to see him totally going in a new direction when he's at the height of his popularity, but i don't think i'm going to be listening to this in a few years time like his other records. also if this was a postal service record, i'd probably think that it's boring.

otoh, i've liked pretty much everything kanye has ever done so i'm not shocked or anything that i really like this stuff

yeah...it'll be interesting to see how this stuff plays out, because Kanye did legitimately make a lot of things (musically, lyrically, fashionwise) cool or acceptable that platinum rappers wouldn't have dreamed of doing before he did it, but there has to be some kind of point where there's either a backlash or no other major artists choose to follow him down a path no matter how successful he is at it.

i like most of Kanye's shit in the past but he started to lose me with Graduation. he's always been kind of reactionary and trend-chasing but the way he's co-opting a lot of popular sounds (808s, AutoTune, Toomp beats) in the name of 'originality' but actually ending up with something way worse than what he's biting is some sad shit.

forkslovetofuk (some dude), Thursday, 13 November 2008 17:43 (fifteen years ago) link

It's maths. There's, what, a third of the money to be made in CD sales as there was ten years back (what was the financial peak of rap in America? 1999?). So A-list rappers have to:

a) do stuff that works better in a live environment
b) do stuff that appeals to non-traditionally targeted rap markets (ie, Europe)

xpost yeah i gotta give you credit for that man...i honestly did not think back then that 5 years later he'd be mega-famous and would not fucking go away.

forkslovetofuk (some dude), Thursday, 13 November 2008 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i spose it's not biggie either way, record will probably be huge.

but it bums me out cuz i'm at heart an old east coast stan and kanye -- like prime period, blueprint/college dropout era, was pretty awesome to me because he found this great way to flip a classic soul/rnb sample style but in a way that sounded completely modern and glossy and could fit with all the southern outer space type shit that was big at the time.

'RAPPERS I WOULD NEVER DREAM OF PUNCHING IN THE FACE?' (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 13 November 2008 17:44 (fifteen years ago) link

xp to alex

i think the only thing you can really nail him on is autotune which is just total trend-hopping bs on his part and is made even worse by the fact that he defends it by saying that he's been using it since college dropout

as for the toomp/jeezy/street thing-- in a way this is kanye's insecurities playing out, which is a part of his personality that has been v appealing to lots of people and out in the open to everyone else. i don't think him getting a toomp beat or jacking toomp's style is all that egregious. to me, it's either a collabo or a career producer trying his hand at something that is not his bread and butter

myspace password secretary (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 13 November 2008 17:47 (fifteen years ago) link

all that said though i don't fundamentally disagree with you

myspace password secretary (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 13 November 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah Toomp as a bullet point on there is kind of stretching admittedly, i know i'm in the minority in hating "Can't Tell Me Nothing".

okay...settle down...John Wesley Harding is a fucking joint of all time.

i listen to all sorts of shit besides rap. i have zero problems with ppl doing different shit...if it was GOOD.

honestly....every fucking decent sized college town in america has some "electro-pop" duo that's like a dude and a girl singer with a laptop making "dance pop" tunes....these beats just sound like that type of shit to me, the shit i see when i got to some random show at the turf club in st paul on a wednesday nite....

that's my problem with it. big "bold" career moves a la dylan have to be backed up with shit that actually sounds FRESH and cool...this doesn't, it sounds like kanye chasing trends not setting them.

honestly i wasn't joking when i said reject gorillaz tracks, honestly i'd say the gorillaz had songs better than any of the new Kanye songs (IMO)...plus at least it had Del.

it sounds like kanye chasing trends not setting them.

I mean, i def agree with that to an extent re the pieces he uses: R&B Autotuners, hipster-house squelches, Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy, Blue Man Group thwaps, even some Animal Collective style noises in the bridges.

But when he puts it all together it's uniquely Kanye. That's why it's great!

i don't want to go too far down this rabbit hole but is it possible that the beats here aren't super crazy for a reason? i mean kanye's proved himself as a producer-- this isn't like wayne saying he's going to do his own shit and ending up with underdeveloped electro-pop. as for the fye ollowing trends not setting them thing... i mean sure the autotune thing is way tired esp. by this point but every rapper turned autotune-hound has used it on rap beats or r&b songs. within rap, esp. mainstream and esp. w/in the context of rappers in 08 using autotune, i think kanye is certainly stepping somewhere his contemporaries arent
