omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:40 (sixteen years ago) link

best NFL season ever. Is there going to be some long behind the scenes article at some point about just what went on with the Pats all year?

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:40 (sixteen years ago) link

lol, you root for new jersey

gabbneb, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:41 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah fuck bill simmons, wasn't his last one titled like "yeah sorry pats will win" or something

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:41 (sixteen years ago) link

so glad I didn't put money on this game! was all set to take the Pats for $200 and chickened out

milo z, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:42 (sixteen years ago) link

bill simmons:

If this Patriots season really is a perfect storm, then the Super Bowl should end like that Clooney movie. In other words, the Patriots would charge out to an early lead, throw all over the place, make a couple of big plays, put the Giants on their heels, force the Giants to abandon their running game and put Eli Manning in the position of playing from behind. And the lead would keep growing and growing, and by the time the game ended, New York's boat would have been smashed to smithereens. That's what the football version of a perfect storm should look like.

Will we see it on Sunday? I say yes.

The Big Pick: Patriots 42, Giants 17.

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:44 (sixteen years ago) link

lol half right buddy

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:44 (sixteen years ago) link

They keep running a ticker underneath the ESPN coverage saying that Sen. Spector is going to look into why the NFL destroyed the tapes at issue in the Patriots "SpyGate" controversy. The "destruction of the tapes" story surfaced months ago, but seemed to get no traction at the time. Could be a long offseason in NE.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 4 February 2008 03:48 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, that story was on CNN this morning, they interviewed Specter about it. (He is still pissed about that Eagles loss.) As far as the tapes destroyed.. I somewhat suspect it's about this kind of stuff going on all over the league and the NFL trying to pretend its not..

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:50 (sixteen years ago) link

That was the best Super Bowl I've ever seen. Four lead changes. Brady sacked five times (I've been saying it all year: The way to beat Tom Brady is to blitz like crazy!). The Tyree catch was the play of the year. Patriots do not go undefeated. And Tom Petty rocked the house.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:52 (sixteen years ago) link

It's a trivial subject for Congress, but the dismissive attitude of the NFL about the story is galling. And if tapes are destroyed across the NFL, it isn't done like this, in the shadow of a brewing spying controversy.

The Sports Guy can eat a dick.

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:53 (sixteen years ago) link

seriously, i'm trying to figure out if that was the best super bowl i've seen in ages b/c it was good or b/c i developed such a visceral hatred for the pats.

man, how about that worst team to ever play in a super bowl, huh?

j.q higgins, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:55 (sixteen years ago) link

nfl, cia... same diff!
xpost

tehresa, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:55 (sixteen years ago) link

18-1*

am0n, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:56 (sixteen years ago) link

dude i hate to be the one to break this to you but the giants are one of the worst superbowl teams ever and the pats are one of the best - this shit will not be close.

jets game - you dont have to take a game off to coast you just coast knowing that this team cant touch you.

and people are reading waaaay too much into to pats v giants part 1. when the pats realized the giants were actually trying to win the game they scored 22 straight points and were ahead by 10 w/1 minute left. that shit wasnt close

lol

cankles, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I watched the Giants playoff games and they did not look like a bad team at all, and Pats mysteriously looked pretty bad last week, and I still wonder if there is some dark secret at the bottom of it, but there probably isn't.

Now I get why they talk about the football gods.

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:00 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the Pats just wore down mentally over 20 weeks.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:07 (sixteen years ago) link

This wsa awesome, guys.

HI DERE, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:09 (sixteen years ago) link

seriously, i'm trying to figure out if that was the best super bowl i've seen in ages b/c it was good or b/c i developed such a visceral hatred for the pats.

There have been a bunch of very good Super Bowls lately, e.g., Rams-Titans, Patriots-Panthers. This one was good, too.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 4 February 2008 04:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I grew up in an era when almost every Super Bowl was a boring blowout. The past 10 years or so have seen a refreshing run of competitive games.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 4 February 2008 04:12 (sixteen years ago) link

Tom Brady scoffed when told Wednesday that New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress guaranteed New York will beat Brady's undefeated New England team in Sunday's Super Bowl.

"We're only going to score 17 points?" Brady said before chuckling about it. "OK. Is Plax playing defense? I wish he had said 45-42 and gave us a little credit for scoring more points."

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:13 (sixteen years ago) link

jessie monster, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:13 (sixteen years ago) link

see, dan esk, i don't think just b/c a game is close it's necessarily a good game. i factored those games you mentioned into my assessment and i feel like those were just close games, but this was a genuinely taut, well-played game.

j.q higgins, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:19 (sixteen years ago) link

yes? There were chunks of it I didn't see (I was taping it LOL) and.. I could not figure out #1 why the offensive line couldn't protect Brady at all and #2 why they couldn't adjust the playcalling..

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:26 (sixteen years ago) link

eighteen and one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

johnny crunch, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Ok...I ain't here to tell anybody "I told you" because I didn't. I'm as surprised as anybody here. Not that it was a good game, as I didn't think it was going to be a blowout. Thought the Giants could win, but didn't think there was any chance in hell they would win.

A game that was largely uneventful for 2.5 quarters turned into a great thrill ride. It was a great game from both teams, but...give Eli a fucking hand. What a game. And his one pick was his own receiver's fault.

I have to say the play where he, by the hand of God, avoided a sack, and threw a pass caught on the HELMET...has to be one of the greatest Super Bowl plays of all time.

Congratulations to the Patriots, I mean, it was still a great season...and even though I loathe them, I respect them. The Patriots were good for football this year because they inspired so many teams to lay a lot on the line.

Whether it was the Giants sacrificing their starters against them in Week 17, Philip Rivers and Gates trying to tough it out despite being royally banged up, it always created drama week in and week out.

I'm exhausted. I had a great time.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:30 (sixteen years ago) link

giants TOTALLY outplayed the pats in this game
reminded me of the GB game in that respect where they still could have lost

yeah tyree will prob be off the giants in a few yrs but he will be legendary forever for that catch...i almost wanted him to win mvp instead of eli

johnny crunch, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:34 (sixteen years ago) link

shit. I currently seem to have the same problem I did when I wound up in the Prov emergency room watching Pats AFC title game.. heart racing and won't slow down (last time it did not start because of football). What can I do?

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:34 (sixteen years ago) link

Yep. Just a great battle.

so, chicago kevin, daria-g, and other pats fans, my condolences, but hey, just relish in the fact that you've still had 3 super bowl titles in this decade, 4 appearances, and 6 playoff appearances which is still amazing.

jhoshea, you, however, can eat a dick!

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:36 (sixteen years ago) link

also, WEHERE IS CHI KEVIN?

johnny crunch, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:36 (sixteen years ago) link

daria: honestly, i think spagnuolo dialed up a hell of a game plan and eli manning was playing sort of out of his skull.

so, question: how big of an asshole does tiki barber look like now?

j.q higgins, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:36 (sixteen years ago) link

ehh, I don't think Tiki ever said anything that wasn't true.

Eli hadn't been living up to expectations prior to this year, and really even before the playoffs was hit and miss.

but we saw the real Eli during the playoffs.

Archie must think he's fucking father of the year now. :)

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, good for Eli. I like Eli.

Chi Kevin is probably very drunk?

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:38 (sixteen years ago) link

tiki and shockey both look like overpaid assholes

El Tomboto, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:38 (sixteen years ago) link

so, biggest upset of all time in the NFL?

nah. Jets in Super Bowl 3 still owns that one.

but I think this has to be a close second.

The Patriots over the Rams in 2001 lingering not too far behind.

the worst thing about this Super Bowl is the endless debate that begins tonight between Dolphins and Patriot fans, as to whether the Patriots getting to 18-0 before losing trumps what Miami did since they technically won more games in a row.

Despite being a Dolphins fan, I won't partake.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:39 (sixteen years ago) link

oh and man was Tom Petty's halftime show sleep-inducing.

Especially when compared with Prince's last year.

Tom's a guy I can take or leave, but not the type of guy I want to see headline a Super Bowl halftime show. Not NOW.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:41 (sixteen years ago) link

that boston herald pats blog dude looks like such a perpetua douche

johnny crunch, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:46 (sixteen years ago) link

daerest football gods: heart still racing, please stop. I think I am developing a beer allergy. Two beers + close game.. ugh

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:46 (sixteen years ago) link

well, you're in uncharted territory. i have to imagine it feels harder to be unbeaten and lose in the end to be 15-1, 14-2, 13-3, all of which have been done before.

so again my condolences...your heart rate will come down soon. I still woulda killed for the season they had, my team barely scraped out one win, which I didn't even get to see.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm cool I think I better stick to wine though? I think I was slightly more stressed when Denver was up 10-0 on my Redskins when I was about 10 years old, but only a little :)

daria-g, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:50 (sixteen years ago) link

just be glad you haven't broken anything.

I haven't ever broken anything serious, but there are other football fans I know that have destroyed televisions after games.

Nobody gave the Broncs a chance against the Packers (except me :))

Can't remember exactly what the spread was, but it was double digits.
