So glad to watch this unfold, even if I never did get my shit together to submit a ballot.

Here is a version that works in the UK

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 00:59 (thirteen years ago) link

I think this might be something called britpop but I am only 14 months old so I might be missing some nuances. Can't help but notice that no one in this video is the devil or worshiping him, which is a problem.

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Henry don't be rude to the people

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, I've never heard any MSP album post-Generation Terrorists, which I could imagine might have been eligible for inclusion here, but that Motorcycle Emptiness song is not metal, not heavy. Not even particularly hard. In fact, it's pretty flimsy. I scowl at whoever nominated and voted for this shit.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:03 (thirteen years ago) link

It's off the 1st album.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:04 (thirteen years ago) link

It is? I don't even remember it.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyway, blech.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:05 (thirteen years ago) link

really? it's their big song from it, probably their best song. It's a fucking classic slice of 90s britrock.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Anyway time for one more and its METAL

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:07 (thirteen years ago) link

To make up for that travesty I have made my dumb owner go out and pick up my poop, and now present the worthy british fixer of that mistake

97. Diamond Head - Am I Evil (316 Points 10 votes)

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm a rare American fan of the Manics, and Motorcycle Emptiness is indeed a fine song. But it doesn't belong anywhere near a list of the 100 greatest metal/heavy rock songs of all time.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I just looked and the running order of that album is a little different in the US than in the UK. "Motorcycle Emptiness" was buried in the second half of the album and, since I had it on cassette, I got in the habit of only listening to the first side.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:09 (thirteen years ago) link

No arguments over #97

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:12 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll sheepishly admit to never having known Am I Evil was a cover when Metallica did it.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:13 (thirteen years ago) link

tbf to metallica, they did their best to raise the profile of Diamond Head.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:14 (thirteen years ago) link

From here on out I am just going to switch "Good Dog!" with "AM YOU EVIL?" in the same approving voice and i bet H does not notice and will in fact react with his usual floppy-headed smiling. also it will amuse me

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:15 (thirteen years ago) link

"Am I Evil" is a fucking incredible number, and shd be top 10 material!
I saw them live, when they were on their way out, as "Canterbury" was failing to sell in the shops, they gave it their all & were terrific, "Am I Evil" was the encore. I wish they'd made it, they were such a damn good band.

"Motorcycle Emptiness" is OK for a manics track, but shouldn't be in a list of heavy rock tracks. Baffled by its inclusion

Take my hand, we'll make it I swear (Pashmina), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Hey dumb owner, you shut up. I wish I had been adopted by Danzig according to plan instead of you, you big nancy.

In the meantime, here is the last one for tonight.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 01:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Now that's a great song.

Totally agree that the magnificent "Motorcycle Emptiness" has no business being anywhere near this poll. I could see the argument for "Slash and Burn", maybe, but even that seems like you're really just being difficult. Somebody defend this. Your votes will be revealed at the end, so don't think you can just hide. (Except, of course, I didn't vote, so who cares what I think!)

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 03:50 (thirteen years ago) link

lj as much as i will miss your ulver votes (YOU GODDAMN SON OF A BITCH) this has been open for like 3 weeks dude, and bumped every 2 hours or so.

CHEESECAKE VOTING FRUIT HATING SCUM (jjjusten), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 03:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Can't remember if I voted 'Motorcycle Emptiness' or not, but pretty sure I nominated it - mostly on the basis that it's the best thing from the first album, which was at the very least an attempt at a metal album (the second one is definitely within the aesthetic). If I can vote for 'Wind of Change' or 'Don't Cry', I ought to be able to vote for this. And I can't vote for those, then it's not a poll I'm going to be particularly interested in.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 07:01 (thirteen years ago) link

did you like the youtubes of the other songs?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 08:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Haven't checked them yet - I'm doing this on the phone. 'Kick Out The Jams' was #51 on my ballot iirc, so pleased to see I didn't scupper it.

Revenge of the early 90s!

Why are you posting ties simultaneously?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 09:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, it's still a list of 100 songs and each song deserves its own moment in the sun.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 09:57 (thirteen years ago) link

because we have to get through to #61 tonight (at a decent time so euros can see it).
Cant leave all the work to poor henry!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 09:59 (thirteen years ago) link

but OK, i'll post ties 5 mins apart should we get anymore.

Albumist! ;)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:00 (thirteen years ago) link

(also, adding the year to these might not be a bad idea, considering it's an ALL-TIME poll.)

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:01 (thirteen years ago) link

you want jam with that? ;)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Both of those are from 1992 btw. Will get john to add the years later using his mod powers.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Having the years would be ace, actually.

I did consider voting for 'Midlife Crisis', but then thought it was too much down to nostalgia and not enough a genuine critical appraisal of the song, so left it off.

emil.y, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Rusty Cage is from 1991, fwiw.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:07 (thirteen years ago) link

ahh, it came out in the UK as a single in 92.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I gave 'Midlife Crisis' fewer points than it deserves - great track.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll post years as long as emil.y promises to watch every youtube!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Hm, I'll have to switch computers, but okay.

emil.y, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 10:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Let's do our 2010s POXes

imago, Thursday, 8 February 2018 21:11 (six years ago) link

(inspired by listening once again to Blut Aus Nord's 'Epitome XIV' and thinking to myself 'it doesn't matter what else this guy does, he basically wrote the best metal track of the last ten years')

imago, Thursday, 8 February 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link

rip henry :(

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 8 February 2018 21:14 (six years ago) link

ah yeah that too :(

imago, Thursday, 8 February 2018 21:15 (six years ago) link

tentative MMX POX(I)

Oranssi Pazuzu - Vasemman Käden Hierarkia
Blut Aus Nord - Epitome XIV
Jute Gyte - I Am In Athens And Pericles Is Young
Liturgy - Follow II
Menace Ruine - Venus Armata
Mesarthim - The Great Filter
Thantifaxath - Gasping In Darkness
Virus - Afield
Cleric - Triskaidekaphobe
Mastery - V.A.L.I.S.V.E.S.S.E.L.
Basarabian Hills - Morning Hoarfrost

couldn't bring myself to cut poor BH from this. besides, the Virus isn't really metal. look I put a big line through it

imago, Saturday, 10 February 2018 00:39 (six years ago) link

It's been too long since the last Menace Ruine album.

Dinsdale, Saturday, 10 February 2018 12:22 (six years ago) link

yes it has

now your tracks POX please

in the cold light of day, including BH was overly sentimental and Virus can consider themselves restored

imago, Saturday, 10 February 2018 12:25 (six years ago) link

Glaciation - Les fiancées sont froides
Primordial - The Mouth of Judas
Yob - that one track at the end of one of their albums
Yakuza - a long one with sax

I don't pay enough attention to tracks for this exercise

Dinsdale, Saturday, 10 February 2018 13:13 (six years ago) link

Oh I like that Glaciation track!

imago, Saturday, 10 February 2018 21:58 (six years ago) link

I've made a playlist out of my top ten tracks. It is 2h 10m long ffs

imago, Saturday, 10 February 2018 22:11 (six years ago) link

That's like TWO Dopesmokers

imago, Saturday, 10 February 2018 22:12 (six years ago) link

was that Glaciation track from the album i championed strongly and won loads of voters over with it?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 10 February 2018 22:19 (six years ago) link

AFAICT no one compiled the original list into a Spotify playlist so here you go

the album even made this rollout

TOO LOW!

Dinsdale, Saturday, 10 February 2018 23:15 (six years ago) link

Doing this was a headache:

Deathspell Omega - Devouring Famine
Krallice - Telluric Rings
Torche - Kicking
Gris - Igneus
Spectral Lore - The Cold March Towards Eternal Brightness
Dispirit - Odyllic Void
Vektor - Recharging the Void
Yellow Eyes - Light has Fallen
Gorguts - Pleides' Dust
Pyramids - Consilience

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Sunday, 11 February 2018 16:58 (six years ago) link

Did we not do a tracks version of lifetime of ILM metal poll?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 11 February 2018 17:10 (six years ago) link

If simon and seandalai are up for it then I'd be up for it

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 11 February 2018 17:11 (six years ago) link

I don't think there's that much enthusiasm for that unfortunately. I usually find it hard to pick out/remember individual tracks personally, probably a result of listening to too much album-based introverted prog gubbins. I'd be interested in what someone with a more populist taste in metal could come up with, there's got to be some bangers from the last few years.

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Sunday, 11 February 2018 17:18 (six years ago) link

I made my ten into a Spotify playlist, if anyone's interested. Looking forward to all of yours! :D

Will check out ultros' in painstaking non-playlisted fashion though

imago, Sunday, 11 February 2018 18:28 (six years ago) link

Ha, mine's very dissatisfactory to me but I tried to get an even-ish spread of years. It's basically all long bm tracks and a power-pop song in sludge clothing. Will check out the things on yours I haven't heard but the rest already has my approval, mostly.

obnoxious pun (ultros ultros-ghali), Sunday, 11 February 2018 18:51 (six years ago) link

fyi The Black Stone juuuust missed the cut. Kayo Dot would definitely be in a post-2000 POX! ___on limpid form, obv

imago, Sunday, 11 February 2018 19:01 (six years ago) link

well, we could have a month long noms period where we listen to things we like and then nominate the tracks we like best.

Perhaps we could allow a sort of unlimited nominations in that we can nominate as much as we want BUT each person can only nominate 1 song per album. If you ask others to nominate another thats fine though, lol

put it all on spotify then have a month long voting period to allow listening to tracks . The longer period i think would benefit a tracks poll unlike albums.

Maybe forks would help out with spotify as he's really good with that?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 11 February 2018 19:39 (six years ago) link

I don't think it should be a poll, I think it should be in a shared playlist format

imago, Sunday, 11 February 2018 19:42 (six years ago) link

If something isn't on Spotify then the playlists could be made in Garageband and uploaded to Sendspace or w/e

The guy's protests when they wouldn't let him onto one of those big awful metal databases were about as endearing as you'd hope

imago, Monday, 12 February 2018 20:32 (six years ago) link

lol yeah I found them when I looked him up. metal-archives is a very good resource in many ways but what they allow on the site or not is quite petty. Lustre counts but BH doesn't?

This guy's stuff is quite low in content but it's so warm and calming that I don't mind
