Self-harming has no place in metal.

Holy Bible is a heavier, more abrasive record than anything GNR ever did, regardless of what you think of the comparative merits of the 2 bands.
― Neil S, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:30 (thirteen years ago) link
If I'd voted this would be like 500x troo-er

Depends how you define "self-harming"!

I just went and listened a couple singles from The Holy Bible and, fair enough, they rock (way more than goddamn "Motorcycle Emptiness" anyway), but Appetite For Destruction shits all over those songs from a great height as far as heaviness and abrasiveness is concerned. I don't think those guys even took a shower between November 1987 and March 1989.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link
I love GNR too, but IMO Holy Bible is up there with Joy Division's Closer- but then it came out when I was 15, so I was a sucker for it.
Comparisons aside, I don't think there's much doubt that the MAnics are a hard rock band, and with caveats, one of the best BRitish ones of the last 20 years, again IMO.
― Neil S, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:40 (thirteen years ago) link
" one of the best BRitish ones of the last 20 years, again IMO"
hasnt exactly been a British specialty during that time, has it?
― Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:42 (thirteen years ago) link
and that's not a knock against my british brothers, because i think you guys have historically kicked ass.

Herm, let's end this nonsense, keep rolling out the jams.

Well, I'm no expert, but I doubt it ... but I hate that fucking band so I'm biased

xxp that's a fair point, but hardly the Manics's fault! And yes, on with the poll!
― Neil S, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:45 (thirteen years ago) link
Back to the topic at hand, I've never heard Manilla Road before, but that guy sings like one of the seven dwarves.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 13:48 (thirteen years ago) link
so far the only song I voted for is "Mother," which I danced to at my wedding (my mother is a fan). voted for a different Soundgarden and 4 different GNR songs.

I really think "Ace of Spades" is gonna win. Or maybe "Enter Sandman."
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link
Fucking hell I hope ksh didn't vote so that "Ace of Spades" will win.
If Enter Sandman wins, i quit.
― Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:17 (thirteen years ago) link
I'd rather Mister Sandman win.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:18 (thirteen years ago) link
Over Ace of Spades? or overy everything?
― Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:19 (thirteen years ago) link
If "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or "Enter Sandman" wins we should snap all of ksh's CDs in half.
― ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:22 (thirteen years ago) link
No, just over Enter Sandman. xp

Does ksh even own cds? We're gonna have to dump hyrdochloric acid on an ipod more likely.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:24 (thirteen years ago) link
Ace Of Spades would have to be the frontrunner for top track.

Guessing Master of Puppets and/or For Whom the Bell Tolls will beat Enter Sandman in this crowd.

(at the very least!)

Enter Sandman is a pretty decent Megadeth song.

Oh, god, SLTS by a mile.
― Chicago to Philadelphia: "Suck It" (Bill Magill), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:41 (thirteen years ago) link
so I've asked this like a bazillion times but WHAT IS METAL?
― Mayor Hickenlooper and the liberal agenda (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:42 (thirteen years ago) link
because apparently the divide I made as a youngster is wrong and all of this stuff I considered "hard rock" or "classic rock" is actually metal, which in and of itself seems to be about as all-encompassing as "music" given the way you guys use it
so, what makes something metal? What are the common threads?
― Mayor Hickenlooper and the liberal agenda (HI DERE), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:43 (thirteen years ago) link
I'm on the outside of this sect looking in, I think, but metal seems by all account to be defined by a feeling you get in your testicles. If there's no rumbling, it's false.
(And yes, feeling it in your testicles is really girl-exclusionary...just like metal.)
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:46 (thirteen years ago) link
Bill & Alex In NYC decide what is metal round here.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 14:52 (thirteen years ago) link
by that definition, Miami bass is metal
