I should probably listen to it again, then. I haven't heard it in 9 or 10 years. xxp

your tastes might have been better reflected instead of johnnys

My tastes are being reflected? Sure, I've had some things I voted for place, but I'd hardly say this overall poll caters to my taste.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I was in New York and posting from my ipod is annoying. Plus, I was really sick which made it a pretty crappy short vacation - except for catching up with Alex, which was a blast.

The next track has organ and keyboards for emil.y, and one of the greatest metal guitarists ever. I love this song, I even voted for it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:42 (thirteen years ago) link

any guesses?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I was gonna suggest Deep Purple.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:45 (thirteen years ago) link

(But I don't think Blackmore is really anything to rave over?)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh okay, duh.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

tho johnny, you better start running from bill after what you just said about Blackmore!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I like Deep Purple and Rainbow both, but I don't think there's anything really AMAZING or GUITAR HERO-ISH about Blackmore's skills.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Henry will post the last one as soon as JJ has given him the steak I sent him in the mail that he definitely signed for.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 01:58 (thirteen years ago) link

so lets talk about the tracks so far that have made it.
Any surprises? good or bad?
Discovered anything good you didn't know about before?

Any predictions for the top 20 that aren't the already mentioned "obvious canon" tracks earlier in the thread like Stairway To Heaven, Paranoid, Enter Sandman, Ace Of Spades,Smells Like Teen Spirit, taylor swift, smoke on the water etc

What tracks placing in the top 20 would give you the most pleasure?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Night Songs.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

or even which songs would you like not to have made it?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm giving up on "Nobody's Fool" making it. I'm not even a huge fan of Cinderella, but I think that song is not only one of the best metal songs, not only one of the best songs of the '80s, but one of the best songs I've ever heard. I'm slightly more confident "Rock You Like a Hurricane" might sneak in, but with this voting demographic, I have no certainty that it will.

As for what's come up so far, there have been new discoveries for me, but none of them have been positive. As for what I have heard previously, I've got no gripes with most of it...except "More Than a Feeling." It's about as welcome here by me as that wimpy Manics song.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh, and I like Boston fine. I just don't think it fits the parameters.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:10 (thirteen years ago) link

And to repeat what I said at the time of their unveiling, Welcome to the Jungle and Number of the Beast are way, way, way too low (even though I neglected to do my part in boosting Jungle to a higher position).

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm off to bed now, but id love to see everyone's top 10 predictions before I start posting again!

so please everyone PREDICT THE TOP 10!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:22 (thirteen years ago) link

All 10 will be from Peste Noire's debut album, which was recorded on a single four track tape and then buried in Greenland. Also there are only 4 songs on it.

Henry Kvlt Pvp, Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:28 (thirteen years ago) link

Henry tell us your top 5 metal bands.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:29 (thirteen years ago) link

while everyone else predicts the top 10!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm just guessing at the top 10 (I previous thought Number of the Beast was a lock, but I was wrong):

2 Judas Priest tracks
2 Led Zeppelin tracks
2 Metallica tracks
1 Black Sabbath track
1 Scorpions track
1 track from a '00s band I know nothing about
1 wild card track from either the '70s or the '00s

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:32 (thirteen years ago) link

hmm, interesting no 90s tracks predicted.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 02:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Clearing my mind, here's what I think I would have predicted before we started:

1. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
2. Black Sabbath - Heaven & Hell
3. Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills
4. Judas Priest - Living After Midnight
5. Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water
6. Led Zeppelin - Immigrant Song
7. Motorhead - Ace of Spades
8. Slayer - War Ensemble
9. Anthrax/PE - Bring the Noise
10. Kiss - Rock and Roll All Nite
or Van Halen - Running With the Devil
or MC5 - Kick Out the Jams

Sort of crazy to have no Black or Death Metal, but I just couldn't see any individual tracks having anywhere near the support-levels of these classics.

Of course, not all of these were even nominated!

Will resume countdown after 12. Giving emil.y time to do her countdown catch up!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 08:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Breaking the Law has gotta be top ten right?
Would like to think that Supernaut and Sweet Leaf will be up there too, but arrgghh at Sabbath vote splitting.

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Thursday, 5 August 2010 08:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't think it will be giving away any secrets that everything in the top 10 will suffer from vote splitting, after all, there was over 500 tracks nominated!

But to preserve suspense, no hints at all.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 09:12 (thirteen years ago) link

So you will not deny that 'More Than Words' has actually won this? Woohoo!

Chaim Poutine (NickB), Thursday, 5 August 2010 09:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I didn't say that it was something that didn't suffer from vote splitting that won it either! All will be revealed later.

But i encourage everyone to have a go at predicting the top 10!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 09:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I want to see who guesses closest to the correct order. They will get a special mention from Henry!! (who will be given steak beforehand so he's in a good mood)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 5 August 2010 09:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Is it time yet? Is it time yet?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 August 2010 11:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Good morning.

AC/DC – Back in Black: Another ‘classic’ hitting this chart. I do think the main riff is great, but the song as a whole seems kind of half-hearted. I’d prefer it as an instrumental.

Black Sabbath – Into the Void: More Sabbath. There’s gonna be so much Sabbath on this poll. Didn’t vote for this one, but it’s still pretty great. Uh, I’m not really sure what I’m going to have to say about all the Sabbath that’s coming up aside from ‘yup, this good’.

King Crimson – 21st Century Schizoid Man: I voted for this. There’s a lot of King Crimson that I don’t like out there, but this track cannot be denied. I do feel slightly shamed by the guy who put the youtube together, though – his commentary is much more informative than mine. Should I change to this style? “The song’s lyrics consist of a short poem with one or more metaphors in every line. Musically, the song is notable for its heavily distorted vocals sung by Greg Lake... Most of the song is in either 4/4 or 6/8 time, save for the percussive section in ‘Mirrors’ which alternates between 1/4, 2/4, and 5/4...” This is interesting stuff! I think he’s gone slightly insane by the end, mind you.

Manilla Road – Flaming Metal System: This opens with a full minute of aimless guitar noodling. Argh. The vocals really *are* pretty corny, but that just makes it sort of goofily endearing.

AC/DC – Highway to Hell: Again, a pretty good riff, but man, the vocals/lyrics do just make me think “what a bunch of horrible cocks”. I just don’t ever want to be in a room with people who are ‘rocking out’ to this band. Because that room would probably be Hooters.

Black Sabbath – Iron Man: I think this is the first of the Sabbath tracks that I voted for. NUH-NUH NUH-NUH-NUH BAOWAO BAOWAO BUH BUH BUH.

Metallica – Welcome Home: Oh no, we have a ‘slow, introspective’ intro, is this gonna be a ballad? Sort of seems like it, with the attempt to keep their metal cred by upping the chorus guitars. Oh, okay, and then you get to go into the slightly more rocking bit at the end. Still not convinced by this.

Funkadelic – Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow: Voted for this one, too. This is an absolutely storming track. Did have quandaries about including it, but it’s much harder and rockier than some of the stuff that’s been on this poll, so I don’t feel too bad about it.

Turbonegro – Get It On: I had a brief flirtation with liking Turbonegro some years ago, and thought about voting for ‘I Got Erection’, but then realised I couldn’t actually remember it enough and may not like it any more. This is pretty good, though. Possibly one of the most poppy rock songs that’s been on the poll?

Led Zeppelin – No Quarter: And more Led Zep. I suppose I shouldn’t complain, there’s been more Sabbath than Zep. I agree with Henry that this seems to be subliminally telling you to get some shut-eye. Actually, there’s one effect they’ve put on here that I really like, and could see being put to good use. Just not in this song. I mean, it’s completely inoffensive, but that’s not really what I’m looking for in this poll. Or in music in general.

emil.y, Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Never liked "No Quarter" much

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:41 (thirteen years ago) link

I actually like NQ a lot. Led Zep is alright for me when they are doing mystical, creepy shit. Not alright when they're doing butt-rock or "wo-wo-woman" blooz belters.

more lunacy and witchcraft! (kkvgz), Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:46 (thirteen years ago) link

I like it too, but it always suffered on my casette from being so damn quiet and in between two tunes which are clear as day. The riff on the chorus is killer though. I also quite like JPJ's sequence to this in the film, it's so much nicer than Page's nonsense.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Always thought "The Rain Song" was miles better

tom d: he did what he had to do now he is dead (Tom D.), Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Rain Song is dope.

more lunacy and witchcraft! (kkvgz), Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I just don’t ever want to be in a room with people who are ‘rocking out’ to this band. Because that room would probably be Hooters.

Haha truer words never spoken, i fear.

Take my hand, we'll make it I swear (Pashmina), Thursday, 5 August 2010 12:50 (thirteen years ago) link

All Zep tracks get their own wikipedia entry. From 'No Quarter''s:

One version of the song, recorded at the Kingdome in Seattle in 1977, lasted thirty-six minutes, where, after the piano solo, Jones led the group into an R&B based jam, as a prelude to the guitar solo proper
