I will be drinking in Chicago, in a couple of weeks. I was going to ask for recommendations but it seems like you have all helpfully filled in questionnaires above, with answers that look distinctly like recommendations.

I am excited about seeing Chicago.

Hey, some of you guys are Bu1lt to Sp1ll fans, right? Apparently one of the guys in my band works with the lead guy's MOM at a bank in town.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 September 2006 13:33 (seventeen years ago) link

My survey timing was awesome!

SARAH! We MUST go to Tweet Let's Eat. It's up north on Sheridan and Argyle/Carmen and it's a wee bit pricey and there can be a wait, so it's not an every weekend kind of place bust sister, their brunch rocks socks. Plus if there is a wait, you can sit at the bar in Big Chicks (it's owned by the Big Chicks lady and is right next door) and drink delicious free coffee (no, seriously, it's wonderful) or not free but also wonderful bloody marys. Then you eat awesome food.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 September 2006 13:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Hi Tim. I think I speak for most everyone here when I say we like drinking in Chicago, so give a yell if you want to hang.

I have heard such wholesale ringing endorsements of Jerry's Sandwiches that I trust their secret sauces are wonderful.

Today looks to be a busy one.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Thursday, 7 September 2006 13:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, now I want a breakfast burrito. Thanks Jenny.

can i talk anyone into a cocktail or two this evening?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 7 September 2006 13:59 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm going to Subterranean tonight to see ROBERT BUSCEMI AND KUMAIL AND SOME OTHER STAND-UP NAMED JARED LOGAN. You know you want to. Tix are $10, but apparently you can say you are "industry" at the door and get 2-for-1. I also have a postcard that works in the same way. There's also a "pop-punk" band called THE ROMEROS playing -- I have no idea if they are any good or not.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:09 (seventeen years ago) link

can i talk anyone into a cocktail or two this evening?

Maybe. What time and where? I have to clean the bathroom, but it's small and shouldn't take very long.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:10 (seventeen years ago) link

Ditto on the "maybe" for me. Downtown would be easiest, but don't change things up on my account.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

If you haven't seen him before, Kumail is pretty f'n funny.

daniel striped tiger (OutDatWay), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

zolar x is at the note tonight but i've been to so many shows the past month i won't mind missing them. i'm thinking about heading up to the holiday club at sheridan and irving park, a friend of mine landed a bartending gig tuesdays and thursdays and i've been meaning to go for a while.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:16 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, it's officially 1 week since I've gotten a personalized email from my bosses/co-workers in the office in Chicago. Have they forgotten about me? I could be just sitting around posting on an online message board for all they know!

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:23 (seventeen years ago) link

JENNY! We should make a brunch date. Are you free either Saturday or Sunday this weekend? Do they have big enough tables that we could get a whole crew in?

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Gotta work, so going to do first-thought-best-thought:

1. What's your closest CTA stop?
Paulina

2. Which do you take more often: buses or trains?
Combo

3. Have you ever walked between cars on a CTA train?
Yes

4. Do you own a car? How often do you use it?
No.

5. Own or rent?
Rent.

6. What neighborhood do you live in right now?
Roscoe Village

7. If you could live in any neighborhood, housing costs be damned,
where would you live?
Can't decide. Nice house in Oak Park? Nice house in Wilmette? Roscoe is fine for now.

8. Are you *from* Chicago?
No

9. Did you go to high school here?
No

10. What's your favorite local band? (Other than the one you're in...)
Patricia Barber

11. What's the best Chicago music venue?
HotHouse, South Union, Old Town School, Ice Fac

12. What's your favorite bar and why?
Hopleaf at 5 p.m. - good beer, good natural light, wide array of periodicals

13. Mayor Daley: Will he die in office or what?
Sure

14. Who, besides Rich, would you like to see in the mayor's office?
Albini

15. Big Box Living Wage Ordinance: Good or bad for Chicago?
Good

16. Wal-Mart: Disaster waiting to happen or good way to revitalize the
south-side economy?
$1.50 for a tube of toothpaste would be better for the health and economy of the South Side than the same tube for $3.95 at a corner store.

17. Ever been further south than 95th St.?
Been on 95th Street, in Beverly, a few times.

19. Ever been further north than Jarvis?
Sure. Mostly visiting friends who've bought their first home/condo.

20. Did you go to college in Chicago? If so, where?
No. Kind of wish I had.

21. Who is your favorite CTA busker?
Japanese lady. And 3-4 years ago I saw three amazing freestyle rappers at the Jackson stop.

22. Weirdest [non-]panhandler story...
Walking down State St. just south of Division. 1 a.m. on a Sunday morning. Guy starts to approach me; I give a gesture of "I don't have anything" - and he says "Naw, man, I'm not asking for money, I'm sellin' shit."

23. Macy's: Retail vampire sucking the life out of State St. or a the
wave of the future?
Sad.

24. What's your favorite shopping district?
Maybe Quimby's/Myopic, though I like all the mall stuff too.

25. Chicago dogs or deep dish pizza?
Both sparingly.

26. Smoking ban: Mike Ditka or the American Lung Association?
ALA

27. Kanye or Common?
I like the Kanye video where he's driving around the department store. I like the Common video where he's in outer space. I've never gotten a song by either stuck in my head. Rhymefest put out a great mixtape last year, but the great songs didn't end up on the album.

28. One place you always take first-time visitors.
Oak Park, Green Mill, out for Thai food.

29. Have you ever called your Alderperson?
No

30. Have you ever called the mayor's office?
No

31. What's your favorite place to eat breakfast?
Orange (on Printer's Row)

32. Have you ever ridden a Metra train and where to?
To Lake Forest to visit a friend at a writer's colony; to Downers Grove to interview someone for my job; to Ravinia; to Arlington Heights...

33. Have you ever been swimming at a city beach?
No.

34. Where is your favorite place to order delivery pizza of any style?
Art of Pizza

35. How many places have you lived in Chicago?
3

36. What are you most embarassed by in the city when guests visit?
My clutter

37. How often do you go to the Harrold Washington Library?
Goes in binges

38. What do you like best about living here? Like least?
Best: Culture; cultural criticism; how people who are both progessive and geniuses in their field live here (in art, food, etc.); how there are always new subcultures to discover and get immersed in.

Least: I really want some hills. And maybe a mountain or two on the horizon.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Tweet is wonderful. Free coffee at Big Chicks is served in pint glasses! It's kind of weird being in BC first thing in the morning.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:29 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm really glad Chicago has no hills since a bicycle is in my commuting repertoire. Even when I ride Foster from Broadway to Clark I am aware of the incline. On the other hand, I don't really have to pedal when I toward Broadway.

The Pig on the Stairs (hanging in a groovy purple shirt) (unclejessjess), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:34 (seventeen years ago) link

when i was in san diego last month i became acutely aware of the hills and canyons and cliffs and palm trees and bamboo trees and eucalyptus trees. and colors everywhere. it was all so starkly different from chicago. but i'm still here.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

The only time I've been to Tweet was the morning after Robin's party last year, when Kenan kept falling down and we all bought lube and sex toys afterward.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, my point was going to be: It was delicious.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

BTW, driving last weekend I heard this new Fergie song and thought it was M.I.A.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:51 (seventeen years ago) link

the lube?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 7 September 2006 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Well, Sarah, I'm glad you asked.

Jeff and I are hosting out-of-town visitors that we know from... THE INTERNET. And not ILX! We're cheating on you all. But we have discussed the possibility of going to brunch, and going to brunch at Tweet would be marvy-loose. So I will get back to you!

As for a drink after work downtown... How about Old Timer's? I get done work at 5.

My legal ethics prof just said, "I'm not your god, and I don't pretend to be." Kind of funny.

Wrong Kinsky for that game.

Eazy (Eazy), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Did tweet get rid of the Bob Thall? (the specials being named after local artists, and Bob Thall being a photographer who teaches at Columbia and who I've met numerous times) The actual dish was: different flavor cubes of jello with fruit and a bunch of nuts sprinkled over the top, which sounds kinda awful, but was actually quite tasty.

robots in love (robotsinlove), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought the Bob Thall was a vitamin and a cup of coffee. Maybe that's someone else.

Nastassja Kinski, then?

Today I flippantly asked a group of frat boys if they couldn't remember who was in their workshop group because "perhaps [they] received a blow to the head"

OOOPS. They didn't giggle, but I did, secretly.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:35 (seventeen years ago) link

(this happened in class, not randomly on the street FYI)

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

Dudes that curse all the time at work sound really stupid (at least in an office). Fuck them for making me feel all prudish.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Something about cursing at work seems sort of undignified to me. You're not prudish, you're an adult.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:44 (seventeen years ago) link

I mean, unless you're a labor lawyer, and then all bets are off because cursing is in the handbook.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:45 (seventeen years ago) link

I have the Chicago threads to get that out of my system. If I ever want to curse -- or even say something truly vile and disgusting -- I say it here. It's cathartic.

always crashing in other people's cars (kenan), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I think even lawyers get a little out of pocket sometimes, too. I've been coming to the possibly prudish opinion that cursing and badly drawn cartoons that rely on absurdism as a humor device are signs of laziness.

Independently of each other. Two different signs of intellectual laziness: 1) cursing; 2) expressing yourself via badly drawn cartoon that relies on absurdism for the funny.

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:48 (seventeen years ago) link

fuck that shit jenny.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 7 September 2006 15:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Did I already say this here? I feel like I did. But if I did, forgive me.

When the union folks have their meetings next door to my office it is a curse-fest. Cursing is not even used for emphasis, just randomly. "On today's agenda we've got the fucking minutes from the last meeting." "One great way the Laborers can recruit is by stripping other worksites of their best goddamn workers."

These meetings include males as well as females.

They do tend to tone it way down when they have meetings that include community and faith-based organizations.
